I could use some help with some pop/punk recommendations

I've run through my last couple batches of CDs that they're burned into my freaking brain. I'm starting to hate my music, I've got about 40 gigs of stuff going back to about 1990, and I need some new blood and bands. I'll throw out stuff off the top of my head that kicks ass for me and I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Good Recent Stuff (could be only recent to me ):

Panic! at the Disco - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
Refreshments - The Bottle and Fresh Horses & Fizzy, Fuzzy...
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue (don't like Lights and Sounds though)
Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This to Memory & I Am the Movie
Alkaline Trio - Crimson & Good Mourning
Simple Plan - Live at the Hard Rock
Sum 41 - Chuck
Green Day - Everything, especially Nimrod
Rise Against - New CD, don't remember the name
White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
Eve 6 - It's All In Your Head

I'm pretty sure that sums up my last mp3 disc, I'm dying to get the new Living End CD but it seems to only be an import at this point. Most of my friends recommend all this underground punk stuff that sounds to me like screaming and a kid slamming a trash can underneath a subway. I'm glad they like it, not for me though. People say I should try the Arctic Monkeys, doesn't sound too promising but I'm still trying to round up a few of their tracks to give them a shot. I need new stuff and I'm desperate, help would be appreciated.

most, if not all, of my punk taste ends sometime in the mid-80s, but I was a big fan of:

Death on Wednesday - Buying the Lie

sounds like Danzig crossed with Morrissey (not my words). worth looking into.

You might like Anti-Flag, Morningwood, Arctic Monkeys or the new Vines

I think Hawthorne Heights is total shit, but it fits the whole pop/punk genra.

OH YEAH, you'll probably really like the YEAH, YEAH, YEAHS...fever to tell is a more manic album, but most people like the more subdued SHOW YOUR BONES

Why dont you look here? http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=451539

maybe Placebo, We Are Scientists, or Hard-Fi (I dont think we're in pop/punk anymore)

Hell, If were gonna leave the whole punk scene...check out Wolfmother

I'm assuming everyone has all the Descendents albums. And All.

Don't forget about:

The Queers
Screeching Weasel
Less Than Jake (more punk/ska than punk pop, but still good & catchy. I recommend "Hello Rockview")
early Goo Goo Dolls is great. Probably more along the lines of what the OP is looking for. And by "early Goo Goo Dolls", I mean s/t, "Jed" and "Hold Me Up"
Face To Face
Lagwagon
Lawrence Arms
Dillinger Four

I'd say it's more power pop, but close enough. Damn good album!

Great lil album. Still creepy going on their site and seeing their final venue posted up top.

I'm personally a fan of Rx Bandits and Streetlight Manifesto, but both are more bordering on pop/ska.

Now that I'm at home w/ my mp3 player, here's some more recommendations (not that I would call some of these punk/pop, nor 90% of the bands the OP mentioned, but these are in line with what I think OP is looking for):

Unwritten Law
Wax
The Muffs
The Methadones
Teen Idols
Sugar/Bob Mould/Husker Du
Replacements/Paul Westerberg
Pink Spiders
Mustang
Kelly Osbourne (loved her first album; don't know what happened on the 2nd one!)
Hagfish
Chixdiggit
Ann Beretta

Hagfish, Chixdiggit, Ann Beretta, Pink Spiders, & the Methadones are the "newer" stuff that OP may like more. You can hear samples of the songs & buy the albums at amazon, music.msn.com, & interpunk.com

There's a whole world out there!

Sleater Kinney

"Call the Doctor" & "Dig Me Out" are probably my favorites, though looking at your list, I would guess that their newest album "The Woods" is closer to your tastes.

Awesome, thanks for all the recommendations everybody. That's a lot to dig through. I didn't want to list everybody or everything I like, but that's a great bunch of bands I'll start sorting through. And regarding the "pop/punk" tag, I loathe labels and like all kinds of stuff, but my favorites seem to fall into that overall category more than others. I'm certainly not ashamed to say that I generally prefer more "radio friendly" bands, even though I don't listen to the radio. And I'm all about ska too, I've been procrastinating picking up the last couple Buck O'Nine CDs after one of them sucked (can't remember which). I think I'm going to do my best to grab a few tracks from as many of the bands listed above as I can and just take a shot on 4 or 5 of them.

Regarding your tastes, for Chixdiggit, I recommend their first album.

Descendents: "All"
Goo Goo Dolls: "Hold Me Up"
Hagfish: 2nd album, whatever it was called
Less Than Jake: "Borders & Boundaries" & "Hello Rockview"; the b-sides album is very good too. As is the Grease tribute. All their other stuff isn't too good, in my opinion.
The Queers: "Love Songs For The Retarded"
Screeching Weasel: "Anthem For A New Tomorrow" & "My Brain Hurts"

i can't believe nobody mentioned mxpx yet! check out "life in general" or "slowly going the way of the buffalo." both great albums. i think they also have a greatest hits album out as well, so that might be a good place to start as well. but everything they've done since 98 is pretty awful, imo.

also, if you're into the dancey elements of panic! at the disco, i'd suggest checking out men women & children and head automatica.

here's some more pop-punk suggestions (some are not so poppy):
a wilhelm scream - ruiner
the academy is - almost here
acceptance - phantoms
against me! - as the eternal cowboy, reinventing axl rose
anti-flag - for blood and empire, a new kind of army
the ataris - blue skies, broken hearts...next 12 exits
brand new - deja entendu, your favorite weapon
gatsby's american dream - volcano, ribbons & sugar
latterman - no matter where we go
midtown - save the world lose the girl, living well is the best revenge, forget what you know
rise against - revolutions per minute (this one is much better than their most recent one)
saves the day - stay what you are, through being cool
say anything - ...is a real boy
strike anywhere - exit english
taking back sunday - tell all your friends, louder now (comes out 4/25)
ted leo & the pharmacists - shake the sheets

also, since you're into ska:
reel big fish - turn the radio off, why do they rock so hard?
goldfinger - hang-ups, self-titled
hepcat - right on time, out of nowhere
the hippos - forget the world
less than jake - losing streak, hello rockview, pezcore
operation ivy - self-titled
rx bandits - the resignation, progress
save ferris - it means everything
the suicide machines - destruction by definition, a match and some gasoline, war profiteering is killing us all

alright, i should stop now or i'll just end up listing everything i have on my mp3 player.

Squeeze and The Motors, the former being a mite more "poppy".

I'm wondering if anyone knows what punk pop means anymore! FatTony & mndtrp know, but I guess the definition has changed these days.

Yeah, that's why I listed some bands I liked a lot first. I honestly have no idea what punk/pop means, but when I look up what I like that seems to be the overall heading. I always equated "pop" with popular/radio stuff, which would make sense for me if you combined that with punk, ska, alternative, rock, whatever. It's the underground/hardcore from any real "genre" stuff that I just can't get into, no matter how hard I've tried.

I'm reading some absolutely glowing reviews about The Exploding Hearts, but just read that they died in a van accident? That sucks, I was wondering why I might never have heard of them.

Just remember, EVERY band was "underground" at one time or another. That's half the fun of listening to underground music: discovering hidden gems.

Yeah, the Exploding Hearts died while on tour (I think all but one guy). Sad story. I don't think you'd like them though. Great band. They were one of those bands that were retro, but "got it".

Good point, good point. From my experience, for even the bands that I do like a lot now, a lot of their older albums while they were "underground" or growing or however we put it, aren't the same quality as their higher profile stuff. But it's still a valid issue and I'm looking for stuff I might have overlooked here.

I feel pop-punk to be the bouncy, happy, sometimes gooving, punk. Punk to me would be more along the lines of Black Flag or Minor Threat. Just as any other genre, it's one way to break it down. I try not to get too specific with my genres, but it's nice to be able to differentiate. For instance, I like metal. However, I don't like hardcore or black metal much.

Anyway, if you like ska, you have to go with The Might Mighty Bosstones Let's Face It. Excellent album.
