Best location/price for a decent bike for upcoming NYC FIVE BORO BIKE TOUR?
Hey all.
Can anyone help me with suggestions on where to purchase a decent but cheap bike for this event that takes place May 7th? I'm currently training for a marathon (race day June 11th) and thought this would be a good change of pace in my training. I went into a bike store and didn't like the prices I saw (three hundred dollars and up!!).
I'm looking to spend no more than $200 but much preferrably around $150. Please help with brands and styles of bikes that would be within my budget. Your personal experience with a particular manufacturer and/or a style would really help me in my decision process.
Thanks.

You could probably go to Target or K-Mart, but any bike shop in NYC probably isnt going to have anything for under $700.00. I would try to look on Craig's List or Ebay if you are looking for something in that range, or you could check out Target or Kmart, but the bike isnt going to be anything great, but will get you from one place to the other.

I was just at Target the other day looking at bikes for simple Point A to Point B usage and some recreational stuff. They had some decent Schwinn bikes that might should be ok for a "Bike Tour" and within your price range. Nothing specatacular and nothing you would use on a "Bike Race" like the Tour de France, but might work for you.
Almost forgot...the prices were in the $140 range...

If you want a decent entry level bike, you will be at least $500. if you want $150, you could do as the above suggested, or go to walmart. These bike will be heavy, not very durable, and not properly assembled. i guess for training purposes, these bike will be good since they are HEAVY, mostly due to steel components.
i just browsed craigs list in NY, and there seem to be a few that are worthwhile. You could just find some in your area, and post a link and we can take a look.

what about this one?
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/152289874.html
the no shocks part could be rough during the bike tour.

That bike is like 10 years old, with the thumb shifters. It is essentially a wal-mart bike.
I really didn't see anything there decent today, in your price range.
I don't know what shocks would do for you in the city. Maybe a front, but you won't need full susp.
