I don't know. I just like the look of it on paper.

Is it possible the extra space can deliver a better picture? Or is this something that can't be accomplished?

Paramount is using MPEG-2 for all BD releases, right? So technically, shouldn't MPEG 2 look better on a BD50 as opposed to BD25?

I don't know. I just like the sound of it.

Is it possible the extra space can deliver a better picture? Or is this something that can't be accomplished?

I don't think (thus far) there's been ANY BD disc that has gone beyond the HD DVD version. To be honest, WTC will probably be MPEG2 on BD and VC1 on HD. And, again, the BD version never outperforms better than the VC1.

I'd save yer hankerin' for a BD50 for another title that's BD-only.

Mr. Cinema
10-31-06, 10:53 AM
What I don't understand is why Paramount choose to encode twice. Warners doesn't. Isn't it extra time to encode with VC1 and then encode with MPEG2?

Oh, have you read some of the praise V for Vendetta is getting at AVS? Seems to be an amazing looking disc. My local Best Buy has it, even though it's higher than Amazon. It's available there in "5 to 9 days", so I may pay the extra $5 and get it now.

I haven't. I was able to see a clip of it already. ;) I'm just happy to be getting it at all.

I'll be picking it and Under Siege up at Best Buy today, price-matching with Target.

I don't know how reliable it is, but Best Buy has these HD-DVDs up for preorder for 12/5 (I don't remember seeing these elsewhere):

The Matador (Unrated) -- I didn't know there was an unrated cut of this.
Scary Movie 4
Derailed (Unrated)
Wolf Creek (Unrated)

And Lady in the Water on 12/19.

1) nor I, must be an extended cut but I would be surprised and doubt if the reinstated footage is of NC-17 content.

2) Scary Movie 4 should look great, since it was shot with HiDef cameras and the DLP presentation I saw was like looking through a window.

Not sure....i was just going by hdblogspot...

"Based on this pricing it seems that the North American release of Black Rain (1989) on HD DVD will be a single-disc set and will not be the same the 2-disc HD DVD set planned for the Japanese market on November 17... I've posted more details of the Japanese 2-disc set earlier, if you're interested, you can check it out by clicking here."

There are no plans to change it at the moment. And even if they do, the discs released between the beginning and then will not be region coded. There are discs from BD-only studios that have been released overseas.

Its not that abnormal for Japan to have a 2 disc release of a movie and the US getting a one disc set. It has happened many times in the past with SD discs. Black Rain is just a very popular movie in Japan obviously because of the Japanese setting in the film I would imagine so I dont find it very surprising that they would do something extra for that region. I loved the film and will definitly be getting the Japanese version.

Does anybody have the list of features on the 2 Disc Japanese version?

PS..

PS..

Yes. I posted all of it in the international forum as well as the dvdtalk thread about Black Rain.

All of those extras on the 2nd disc are apparently in Japanese and have no subtitles.

Update: i just checked and it was 40 minutes of interviews with the Japanese stars (all in Japanese) and a photo gallery. Don't think we'll know officially until someone buys it.

Would you not wait for reviews and specs?

That depends....right now, yes.....if Fox starts putting out quality discs and rarely (if ever) has a bad one, then I would anticipate that the quality would be good.

Thats the same approach that I take with HD-DVD now. All of the HD-DVD studios have released quality HD-DVDs (and BD counterparts in most cases)....so I preorder like a mofo.

Sony and Lionsgate are the 2 that I would wait for reviews on right now.

If there are no extras, then it depends on the movie for me. I would probably wait on Xmen and X2 for a release with extras.

Something like LOTR or Star Wars or Matrix or some others, I would go ahead and buy. Then, upgrade later when another version is released.

I hope X3 is a BD50. It would also be nice if it included all the extras that we Region 1 folk didn't get on our 1-disc dvd. I think region 2 got a 2-discer. But I somehow think this will mirror our Region 1 dvd release. If I were Fox, I would release this title this year and not with the Japan release date of January.

I'll buy it, but I wish it wasn't a combo. Is it some kind of rule that every one of Universal's catalog combos has to be a title with more than one DVD release, thus making it more likely that a buyer already has a version of the title on standard DVD?

Again, they're not marketing combos to "us." They're marketing it to J6P who may (and do, IMO) think it's a great idea. And since they're going to be giving them away with the 360, it's still a selling point.

I'd be THAT is the reason why they're doing it.

From the list at work, i count 24 titles announced for BR for 2007 already. And only 13 for December of this year.

For HD-DVD: Only 6 announced titles for 2007 so far, but they have 16 for December announced already. From what we've seen, HD-DVD is being ALOT more guarded about their releases. I think they are letting BR make the first move for releases, then HD is putting up theirs. At least that's what it's looking like.

Even though I might potentially buy a Blu Ray player (in addition to my beloved HD DVD player), I simply can't get excited about any of the new title announcements, even when it's for movies that I actually like (Princess Bride, Usual Suspects). This is mainly because one never knows how it will actually end up looking (PQ-wise) and because it's 99% certain that most of the special features will be left off. I personally like to replace my SD titles with HD material, but I can't bring myself to do it when there are missing features. Therefore, I would have an SD and an HD version of something like Usual Suspects...a waste of shelf space.

These HD formats are supposed to be the best of all worlds (amazing picture/sound quality, all special features from any available SD versions), but Sony (and by extension, Fox, MGM and Disney) keeps treating them like SD Superbits, where special features would take away from the PQ. Until VC-1 becomes a standard codec for ALL Blu Ray studios (or they can use the other codecs more efficiently) and they equal HD DVD in terms of quantity and quality, I just can't get excited about Blu Ray titles. In fact, I'm also disappointed that some great movies are coming along this early in Blu Ray's life cycle, because it means that they won't benefit from Sony's (and everyone else's) eventual awakening and inclusion of all special features and better picture quality.

Yes, that -- and the (understandable) mediocre titles being chosen for initial waves -- is one of the factors that makes me puzzled that people appear excited about BD.

To me, studio support is trivial if the 'support' from studios like Disney and Fox means shitty titles with minimal extras.

I'll echo Skoobooz's comments. I'm *glad* that they haven't gotten to stuff like Alien, X-Men, Die Hard, Disney animated classics, etc. yet. It gives me hope that when those finally do hit BD (or, hopefully BD and HD DVD) they'll be the quality that we've been lead to expect -- both from a PQ/AQ and extras perspective.

From the Man Room:

Warner Home Video is currently prepping 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation,' 'A Christmas Story' and 'Scooby-Doo: The Movie' for a simultaneous December release on HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

All versions will be presented in 1080p video; however, the HD-DVD versions will carry Dolby Digita Plus audio while the Blu-ray versions Dolby Digital audio - as has become the norm for Warner. Full disc specs including extra features (except for Scooby) can be found by clicking through the disc details below.

All of the titles are expected to carry an SRP of $28.99. We'll update this news with a definitive release date as soon as Warner makes it official. Stay tuned.

All of the titles are expected to carry an SRP of $28.99. We'll update this news with a definitive release date as soon as Warner makes it official. Stay tuned.

as for Scooby Doo - the movie wasn't all that, but the DLP theatrical presentation I saw was eye-popping: wow! Would be curious to hear what the reviews think of the HD-DVD.

Yes to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and a Christmas Story. I'm unsure about Scooby-Doo 2 since I don't consider it to be a classic (i.e. rewatchability).
