Need Suggestions for Mellow Mix

Hey all, I'm looking for some newer music to put on a mellow mix for a friend to introduce them to some new stuff and for me at the same time. This is some ideas I have so far to give you about what I'm looking for. Nothing from the Garden State soundtrack, but anything from The OC, other tv shows, etc. are all go.

What I'm going for so far..

Rocky Votolato- Mix Tapes/Cell Mates
Broken Social Scene- Lover's Spit
Jose Gonzalez- Heartbeats
West Indian Girl- What Are You Afraid Of
Sun Kil Moon- Ocean Breathes Salty
Denison Witmer- East From West
Dashboard Confessional- Warmth of the Sand
Over the Rhine- Latter Days
Alexi Murdoch- Orange Sky
Electric President- Insomnia
MoZella- Light Years Away
Susie Suh- Shell

If you've made a similar mixtape before that worked, please post it! Thank you for suggestions ahead of time. =)

+Danny

3. Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer (9/11 Acoustic tribute)
4. Eddie Vedder - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (the beatles) / I am Sam Sdtk
5. Elton John - Tiny Dancer / Almost Famous sdtk
6. Santana- Maria, Maria
7. Shakira - Beneath Your Clothes
8. Billy Joel - Lullabye
9. Joshua Kadison - Postcards From L.A.
10. Gus - Don't Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult) / Scream sdtk
11. Faith No More - Easy Like Sunday Morning (Lionel Ritchie)
12. No Doubt - Don't Speak (acoustic)
13. Elvis - Fever
14. Chris Isaac - Wicked Game
15. Sheryl Crow - Soak up the Sun
16. Extreme - Hole Hearted
17. John Lennon - Imagine

Some suggestions, most of them on the more melodic / uptempo side of mellow. Certainly not exemplary of their style but give them a shot:

Tree Wave - "Sleep" (Official MP3)
King of France - "Lover Don't Cry" (iTunes)
Electrelane - "Gone Under Sea" or "Oh Sombra!" (actually almost anything from The Power Out will work)
The Russian Futurists - "A Mind's Dying Verse" (Amazon.com)
Soulive - "Turn It Out (DJ Krush Remix)" from (Turn It Out! Remixed)

end the mix on a classy note...

Nancy Sinatra - "You Only Live Twice"

no mention of sigur ros yet? it's mellow, that's for sure.

maybe they haven't been mentioned because i don't think they'd fit into a mix all that well. their albums are about as close to orchestral pieces as rock will ever get, i think. songs are indistinguishable from the whole. always movements, not songs. or, at least, that's the way i understand 'em...

I like this song a lot too, but you just have to get past the first two mins of the guy talking and telling the story.

Check out Joshua Radin. His new single was on Grey's Anatomy this week. His music is all acoustic mellow stuff.

Thanks everyone! Phil and Adrian, you two are *spot on* to what I'm looking for. I'm glad you liked what you found Adrian. I have a last.fm account at http://www.last.fm/user/plusdanny, so add me as a friend if you would like. I'll add you back so I can check up on what stuff you're listening to as I'm sure I'd enjoy it as well. I'll add anyone back if you're interested. I go back and forth from indie stuff to more alt/rock/punk music, so I keep a variety of music going. They have Imogen Heap, Sia, and Iron & Wine's albums/EPs, so I won't be doing any of those for this one, but they're excellent suggestions. I like Nightmare of You's song a lot- might use that. I have some listening to catch up on as I went to a couple concerts this weekend and was away. I'll let you know how it goes! I'll get back on everyone's individual suggestions as well. There's a lot I haven't heard before.

I'm thinking about adding a Matt Pond PA song, but not sure which one. Not the greatest timing to slip in Halloween or Snow Day, but maybe they'd work.

Anyone listen to Josh Ritter's new album yet? Sounds really good, but I don't know what I'd choose. Comes out April 11th. You can stream it here: http://www.flashenhanced.com/joshritter/

If anyone likes Straylight Run or likes their mellow with a little bit of "emo" sound or intensity, I have a strong recommendation for Lydia. http://www.myspace.com/lydia

PS- The Sun Kil Moon song is a cover of Modest Mouse's Ocean Breathes Salty and I give a *strong* recommendation for everyone who likes the original or likes mellow music to download it. I believe he has it up on his MySpace as well, so listen there if you don't sample via downloading. http://www.myspace.com/sunkilmoonband
