Excessive ambition may be one of the lesser TV sins, but it is a sin nonetheless, particularly when it appears to be linked to excessive network pride. Which means FX might want to rethink its efforts to turn itself into the basic-cable version of the HBO art house — at least when the attempt results in shows as grim and pretentious as Thief (10 p.m. ET/PT).
Andre Braugher, who deserves monumentally better, stars in this unappetizing six-week series as a middle-class thief who decides to lead his gang to new thieving heights. The structure is similar to NBC's new Heist, but the tone is completely different: dark, dreary and too liberally spiced by basic cable's unregulated freedom to curse. Yes, we get it: You're provocative and adult. Everything goes wrong, of course, including most of the performances. Watch if you like, but I'll be elsewhere, waiting patiently for Rescue Me's return.

The Post-Dispatch's TV critic seemed to like it:
"Brilliantly acted, "Thief" is also dark, violent and a little hard to get into.
By the end of the first hour, though, there's no getting out."
And the New York Times critic seemed to enjoy it.

Its always good to see Andre Braugher in anything. I liked this so it gets a season pass.
I'm surprised that no one has said anything about this being the first series set in post-Katrina New Orleans. I don't know if the setting will be a major plot point, but I did notice some brief glimpses of Katrina's aftermath so they won't be totally ignoring it, either.

I really liked this, Looks like there are a lot of story lines they could explore.
So whats this about 6 episodes? i was hoping we would get at least 10 in the first season. but if that is the case then a lot is going to happen very fast.
I'll stick with this to see what happens

Damn, that was good. And as my wife said, "that was dark."
And it took her over an hour to finally figure out where we have seen the step-daughter before.
Is it me - or does FX put together the best casts? Or is it just the fact that all good shows are well-cast?

I don't understand the 6 episode length, either. Could it have been hurricane-related production problems?
It's amazing how different Thief and Heist are. The names are so interchangable that I have caught myself thinking about one and calling it the other, but the shows are completely different in just about every way.
