Wow! Universal is actually reissuing a TV show on single sided DVDs!

The show is Northern Exposure, seasons 1 and 2.

Many people here, including me, have had lots of playback problems with Universal's double sided DVDs for TV shows.

This story is good news.

Not so good news for people who have already bought one or both of these.

....Or most of them will be defective, then people will suggest they stop making single-sided DVDs.

What about all the others that have issues?? Will their best customers get the shaft because we were the first ones to buy their substandard products?

Well I'd rather have a superior product eventually make it to market than keep producing a substandard one for fear of offending some customers.

Of course this is a good thing.

If companies never improved their products, then light bulbs would burn out after 10 seconds, and our food would be full of gravel.

If only they will reissue Columbo now. I gave up on Season 3 and would really like to rebuy it with single sided discs.

Let's hope they do it for all the other crappy DVD-18 based stuff.

Yeah but I'm sure Universal would argue the extra money was for the oh so cool packaging on the first two seasons.

I'm confused. DVDPriceSearch says that both Seasons 1 and 2 are 2 disc sets. and these are supposedly DVD 18s. That's 4 DVD-18s.

How then can Universal be releasing a Season 1-2 set using only 4 DVD-9s and the same content?

Wow, if they are just using DVD-18s again that really sucks and I guess there is no hope for a decent release of Columbo.

This might be because there are only 15 episodes in the first two seasons combined. There were only two episodes per side of some of the original discs.

Northern Exposure seasons 1 and 2 re-releases?

FYI: Universal is releasing the first two seasons of Northern Exposure in one set on May 9, 2006. The new set is priced at $59.98 (not including retailer discounts), which is the same MSRP as the single seasons, so if you can wait you'll get twice as much N.E. for what you're paying now. Also, the new set will be SINGLE SIDED discs. No more flippers!
I saw this posted on IMDB.com.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to this or if it's just a rumor?

I'm not sure why they'd bother to offer these sets as non-flippers (the major reason for me holding out if this is true), when season 4 comes out in a day and they're still being released double-sided.

I would think this would upset people even more having shelled out so much money for those 2, very short seasons already for around $100, then they had the mislabeled sides in season 1, different music in season 2 and 3 and probably 4, and then they dropped the parka after season 2.

What a total screw-up of a tv release. Still, if you want the show, there's little choice, but I don't want to pick up seasons 1 and 2 tomorrow, even for less than $20/set if there is going to be a re-release so soon.

They will likely have corrected the disc mistakes from season 1 and at least the whole set will match...which is a good thing...although I'd rather they ALL had parkas than not.

Any info on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Also, since it's up for order on Amazon with a definite release date, you don't have to worry about it being just a rumor.
