The Princess Bride: Dread Pirate Roberts or Buttercup Edition 06.13.06

Reported over at HTF

No info at this point...looks like another SONY rehash.

Yep, and there'll be two versions, both streeting 6/13 for $24.96:

The Princess Bride: Dread Pirate Roberts Edition
The Princess Bride: Buttercup Edition

Uhhhh... no word yet on what this is supposed to mean. I'm guessing just packaging variations?

We'll see in June.

Dear Sony,

Can we stop the re-hash madness?

Thanks.

Wonder if it'll included the Criterion extras.

Great.

Think I'll definitely be sticking to my "Special Edition".

Seems unlikely. Sony and Criterion haven't been particularly friendly in the past.

I'm kind of glad when they do this because I get to pick up the "inferior" version for cheap.

I just picked up Princess Bride Special Edition yesterday for $7.50 new. Probably on sale because the new one is coming out.

Also recently picked up The Producers for $7.50 for the same reason (the Deluxe edtion came out).

I've always enjoyed this movie, but adding these currently make 4 different releases of Princess Bride on DVD. I'm going to pick up the SE that's currently available before I'm suckered into a lame marketing ploy.

What?! No "You Killed My Father, Prepare To Die" or "Six-Fingered" Editions?

Well, i don't think this is just baseless Sony rehash. The Princess Bride has become the latest film to be latched onto by the Hot Topic crowd, so nowadays teen noncomformists everywhere are wearing "Princess Bride" T-shirts, Andre The Giant "Anybody want a peanut?" hoodies and so on.

Monty Python & The Holy Grail lends hope.

Those two things are mutually exclusive.

I can see them now all dressed in their Princess Bride gear because all the other non-conformists are doing it. And probably haven't even seen the movie to begin with.

I didn't realize that PB had become the latest Hot Topic item.

Unless they mistakenly package Blu Ray discs into these new special edition dvd cases I won't be buying.

They've both been that cheap for a while.

Why? I'm guessing they might add some stuff to this new disc, but why does Sony continue to re-release discs that were already more than adequate. No wonder their home video department is struggling to make a profit. I can name dozens and dozens of movies they have the rights to that have yet to be released on dvd or have poor tranfers or a lack of special features. I guess it's just a lot cheaper to sell the same product over and over.

well, track record leads me to believe this will be pointless, we know there is more stuff out there not on dvd. The criterion laserdisc had some diffrent content....I see this as more of a cashing in on the Pirate craze that is sure to come with a Johnny Depp Sequal hitting soon....

I hope its more like the Magnificent seven, or Midnight Cowboy releases, and less like the Patriot, casulties of war re-release.

I wonder if they'll even bother to add anything, or if they'll just trot out the same set of extras and try to charge full price for them again. They probably won't even bother to add Robin Wright's five minute shower scene back into the movie for this edition.
