Do I benefit from HDMI upconvert DVD player?
Previously decided I didn't need upconvert ability but having run across a good price on one of these, I decided to re-look into this type of player. However, in doing some quick research, seems I won't really benefit from getting one and a regular progressive scan would be adequate. Can you confirm this given my situation:
- Sony 34 Wega (xbr960) TV (480p and 1080i native)
- Onkyo 603x receiver
- DVD would be Samsung DVD-HD755 (with apparent 720p and 1080i upscale via HDMI)
My Sony has HDMI input, but my receiver does not. So it seems I wouldn't benefit from adding a HDMI DVD player since I can't HDMI from the DVD player to the receiver. From reading a couple of forums, if I tried to flow the video from DVD player to TV (to use the HDMI cable), while flowing the audio from the DVD player to the receiver (to take advantage of surround sound), things will get a bit screwed up. I didn't follow all the particulars since I'm pretty new to HT stuff but it simply seems that not having HDMI on the receiver rules out this set up.
Is my understanding correct? I don't mind getting just regular progressive scan. Just didn't want to spend the extra few bucks on the Samsung if I couldn't really benefit from it. I don't plan on changing my TV or receiver for years. Thank you.

Your screen might be a little small to actually benefit from the extra resolution. If you're worried about audio synching on the receiver end, check if it has an audio delay setting.
EDIT: I just checked and the 603X doesn't have the digital delay setting, sorry.

Just run HDMI directly to the TV and a digital audio-only run (coax or fiber) to the receiver.
You need to turn the volume down (or the internal speakers off) in the TV when watching DVDs with the surround system.
