Sorry... this deal is dead now. I can't figure out how to edit the thread title.

I found this at walmart.com, which is the same deal as Buy.com offered a few months ago (which didn't go through for a lot of people). It comes out to $47 or so after tax and shipping.

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=cZdGXyuEAtc&type=2&subid=0&offerid=64951.3514480&cat=4096&type=2&dept=4096&path=0%3A4096

Reviews of the set aren't great on Amazon (as it doesn't have the individual boxes, and it consists of only Disc 1's of the few 2-Disc sets), but for 14 movies (actually 13, and a bonus disc), it should be worth a look.

Thanks for your time.

does that mean the version of born on the 4th of july isn't that was recently re-releaesd isn't the ones in the box set?

overall do most of you think it's worth buying ? it seemes like for 14 discs it's a steal. I'm also assuming jfk, and others that are releavant are all the se 2 discs?

AFAIK every version of BoTFoJ and The Doors have been non-anamorphic. This set was released in November '04 to coincide with the theatrical release of "Alexander". Here's an exerpt from the review on DVDTalk:

Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, Talk Radio, Natural Born Killers, and U-Turn (which also has a fullframe version included on the same disc) are all presented in 1.85.1 anamorphic widescreen, while Born On The Fourth Of July, The Doors, JFK, Heaven & Earth, Nixon, and Any Given Sunday are presented in 2.40.1 anamorphic widescreen (except for Born On The Fourth Of July, Nixon and The Doors which aren't anamorphic). The shorts and documentaries in the extra features section are all presented fullframe, 1.33.1 format.

Doesn't look like anybody's pointed this out yet - 'Natural Born Killers' is the significantly inferior R-rated theatrical cut ...

'JFK', 'Nixon', and 'Any Given Sunday' are all director's cuts, but NBK -- which needs it the most -- is theatrical.

If anybody wants to sell off disc 14 [the documentary disc with 'Looking For Fidel' and 'Persona non Grata'], drop me a line; I have too many of the Stone discs to buy the box just for it, but I am interested...

I ordered mine at about 10 PM on the 2nd - and still haven't received a confirmation either. Although, the set was still in stock long after I ordered - but we all know how Wal-Mart is I guess. I did use the cheapest shipping option - so that may have been the problem. The set is still on their site under my account as processing.

Oh well. If I missed out that's fine, though.

This set does not have any of the 2 disc versions (Doors, JFK, Any Given Sunday, Nixon). In fact it is a stripped down set where they have taken out the 2nd disc out of those individual releases and the discs in the set from those movies says disc 1 on them as a consequence. Additionally I also heard that they are packaged in a strange way where you don't get the covers for any of the movies. Instead they are packed together in a box of 4 discs in each or something like that. Look for detailed explanation in user reviews on Amazon.
So, for me it would've only been the documentaries that came with it that would've been interesting.
But, by all means, a great deal (if you don't have any or just a couple of the movies from before).

Seriously, for the price of the set I can and did forgo the additional discs. BTW I received mine in the mail today, as usual Walmart chose a crappy bubble mailer so the box was bent to shit but at least the discs are intact so I'm happy there. Thanks OP for the heads up.

Not sure how strange it is. There are two digipaks that hold 7 discs each. Digipaks are pretty common for sets these days. But no, it isn't simply the individual releases packaged together (not sure that is very common anyhow).

Not trying to say it is not a very good deal. Just pointed out some facts about this to people that are completists and would like the best available versions of each DVD they own.
Of course these movies are all very good with good transfers and price per movie can't be beat.

Dang, I got a shipping notice today! Ordered Friday, shipped Tuesday. Woo hoo!

So, these extra disks that aren't in the set . . . are they long movies divided onto two disks, or are they just disks of extras?

Extras. If the set was missing portions of the movies, even at this cheap price, it would hardly be worth it.

Other than missing some extras, I don't see what is to not like for this price (well, maybe that Wall Street has a shitty transfer).

I am so happy about this now. I sold off my three existing Oliver Stone DVDs for 20 bucks, so, for 20 bucks, this set is so sweet.

Born on the Fourth of July is the Special Edition 16x9! People need to pay better attention.

Born on the Fourth of July is the Special Edition 16x9! People need to pay better attention.
But the special edition is the same crappy non-anamorphic transfer from the older release. Check here (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=1227&___rd=1) for validation.

There was an anamorphic special edition released subsequent to that, around the same time as the Ultimate Stone Collection. Are you saying it's definitely the previous special edition included in this box? Perhaps they were trying to get rid of excess stock....

Actually... despite my previous posting, AnonomusBob15 is correct. I just put the disc in... it's 2.35:1 and anamorphic.

Note: I bought the set from this deal, so perhaps it has changed. Or perhaps this is a 'new' Special Edition (or newer than the disc reviewed in your link).

This one is definately anamorphic, however.

That makes sense then (a newer anamorphic SE). This is definately the newer SE in that case.

AnonomusBob15
03-09-06, 01:01 AM
Also, Nixon has two commentaries and in the booklet (although not true) all films are listed as anamorphic widescreen except for one.

And another inconsistancy with the set, Volume One is listed as 1986 - ?

Didn't Salvador come out before that?

conscience
03-09-06, 01:15 AM
Salvador was released in '86.

And with all the Oscar talk recently, Paul Newman over James Woods and Bob Hoskins? Pfft. James Woods is phenomenal in Salvador.

Well that's great news then I'm glad to be proven wrong in this case!!!! :) I guess they must have put in an anamorphic version of Born on the Fourth of July in later pressings of this boxset. Because on the DVD Talk review for the Oliver Stone Collection they mention that BOTFOJ was not anamorphic. http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=13207. Or maybe the reviewer was wrong the whole time.

AnonomusBob15
03-09-06, 12:41 PM
This is not a later pressing of the set, it still contains the Alexander movie cash, which was released Nov. 2004.

I think DVDtalk just didn't review the set all the way, because Any Given Sunday and Nixon are reviewed as having one commentary, but in fact have two.
