It's A Go: SLU approves plan for arena
By Tom Timmermann
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Saturday, Feb. 18 2006
St. Louis University will break ground on its long- awaited on-campus
basketball arena by September, with the building ready for the 2008-09 season.
The school's board of trustees approved the plans for the $77 million facility,
which will be built on university property near Compton Avenue and Highway 40,
and authorized the timeline for construction at its meeting Saturday. There are
two significant changes in the final plans from what the school announced three
years ago when it declared its intention to move back on campus from Savvis
Center. The building, which will also be used for concerts, trade shows and
school events, now will include all the athletic department offices and
practice courts for the basketball teams but the capacity has been scaled back
to 10,000 from 13,000.
"It has been a long time coming,'' SLU athletics director Cheryl Levick said
Saturday, "and I'm glad it's here."
"It makes a statement we're serious about becoming a player on the national
level,'' SLU men's basketball coach Brad Soderberg said. "I would have liked it
to have been done two years ago, but that's OK. We can finally say we're going
to have a groundbreaking ceremony. I'm so excited."
"Excited isn't the word for it,'' said SLU women's coach Shimmy Gray, whose
team plays on campus in SLU's ancient West Pine Gym. "Ecstatic is more like it.
The new arena is huge for the women's basketball program. We want to do great
things, and it starts with the facility. When big time recruits come to campus,
that's what they want to see."
The groundbreaking could happen sooner than September, depending on how long it
takes to finalize the arena's plans, which were re-done in December when it was
decided to include the practice facility (which will also serve as home for the
volleyball team) and offices. The arena is expected to take 18 to 20 months to
build (Mizzou's new building took 19 months) and would be ready when the
current basketball freshman class are seniors. It's possible the building could
be done for the end of the '07-08 season, but Levick said they weren't sure if
they would want to move there for a handful of games at the end of the schedule
or make a grand debut in the fall.
The school still is $12 million short of its $39 million fundraising goal, but
Levick said they expect it will be easier to raise the money once construction
has begun. Even if the money isn't raised by September, construction will begin.
The original plan for a building that seated 13,000 was based on the minimum
size needed to host NCAA events, but the NCAA has begun putting even the
opening rounds of the men's basketball tournament in large venues, so that was
no longer seen as a concern. By scaling back the number of seats - the arena
would still be one of the largest in the Atlantic 10 (George Washington's arena only seats 5k) - it reduced the cost of
the arena, allowing for the practice facility and offices.
A 10,000-seat arena means that the building would be full or close to it for
most men's basketball games. This season, SLU is averaging 9,011 fans per game,
and from when the team moved into Savvis Center in 1994 until the 2001-02
season, the team averaged at least 12,000 fans every season. An on-campus
facility would likely increase attendance by students, who would be able to
walk from their dormitories or apartments to games.
"We want it jammed, we want it a hot ticket,'' Levick said. "We want it to
sellout, we want people lining up for tickets, we want to create a buzz and
demand and we can do that with this facility."
"I hope it gets to the point where it means something to have a ticket to a SLU
game,'' Soderberg said. "I can't tell you how much happier I am that it's 10
rather than 13. I had to tow the company line, but I was so disappointed there
wasn't going to be a practice facility and offices in the original design. I
understood the advantages of 13,000, the bottom line is I'm a selfish guy and
I'm in it for the basketball. More than anything, I'm excited about a homecourt
advantage."
Though there has been talk of an on-campus arena for years - SLU last regularly
played games on campus in 1945 - the school made official its intention to move
back three years ago, but fundraising for the plan was slow. Soderberg and Gray
have been touting the proposed new building to recruits. Gray has taken
recruits to the site, but she said that showing them actual construction will
be better than just showing them the billboard that's there.
"With West Pine Gym, we're not competitive with the facilities other programs
have to sell,'' she said. "I can tell them that when the arena is built, you'll
be one of the first classes to play there. It will be the home you built
basically. Recruits buy into that."
_________________________________________________________________________________
Big
And from what I have heard - SLU will get three dates a year at Savvis, if they need them.
Here is the school's website for the arena - I don't believe it has been updated since the announcement, but it gives you an idea of what the building looks like etc:
http://arena.slu.edu/arena4.html
The building is a bit boring looking, but at least it's on-campus. In addition to the reduction in seats, there will only be one concourse instead of two.

Important last week in the Patriot League. A lot on the line.
Bucknell 12-0 -- vs Lehigh, vs Army
Lehigh 11-1 -- at Buck, at HC
Holy Cross 9-3 -- at Colgate, vs Lehigh
The format of the Patriot League tourney puts a lot of emphasis on regular season finish. The top-2 seeds automatically host the quarterfinal/semifinal pods. The highest remaining seed hosts the championship.
Bucknell needs 1 win to wrap up the top-seed and home-court advantage in the tourney. Needless to say, they need to keep winning to sustain their at-large profile
Lehigh needs 1 win to wrap up the 2nd seed and earn home-court advantage for the quarters and semis.
HC needs Bucknell to beat Lehigh and win their 2 games to tie Lehigh. In that event, since they would have split with Lehigh, they would likely get the 2nd seed since RPI is the next tiebreaker and they have a 27 spot lead currently.
Can one of the Insiders post what he says about Bucknell, please.
Good to see the tight loss by Bucknell did not hurt them at all in Lunardi's eyes. A 10 seed vs GMU would be interesting. My college alma mater vs my law alma mater. Greensboro would be a nice destination for travel - for the team and me.
Maryland is actually up to 2nd in the Last 4 Out, which is remarkable. The game at Florida State Wed night is essentially a playoff game.

My apologies in advance to Josh H., but WVU is overrated this week. They have lost 2 straight and 3 of 4. They should've dropped farther than to #14. Kansas is overrated at #16. I know they're on hot streak, but still they have 6 losses. Other than Oklahoma (against whom they had to come back from like 14 down in the last 8 minutes) I'm not really impressed with any of their wins in the recent streak.
I can't believe George Mason is at #25 in the coach poll. They don't have a single win over a major conference opponent. Coaches must just be throwing them a bone there.

Thad Matta had a chance to deny that he'd be interested in the Indiana job today at his teleconference and he didn't so this could get interesting. Oden and the rest of his recruits I don't think could follow him to Indiana on scholarship so this could get because of Big 10 rules.

He grew up right along the border.
If IU gets a coach that can lock down the state his well drys up quickly. Plus there are still the violations hanging over the program. If the NCAA actually decides to punish a program for cheating Oden and company are gone.

Actually I agree. I expected them to fall a little futher as well. But I guess they're weighing the schedule strength.
@ Pitt, @ Georgetown @ Seton Hall(on 1 day rest) then UCONN is about as tough as it gets in any conference.
And now have @ Syracuse on 1 day rest after playing UCONN.
Playing well against UCONN probably helped them not to drop to much as well, as it was close the whole game (WVU's biggest lead was 5, UCONN's 8).
But at anyrate, all the rest of the games are winnable, so they have the chance to bounce back and move back up in the rankings....or to continue to slide and get a crappy seed and an early exit.

Fucking WVU. Shut down McNamara and still find a way to lose. -rolleyes-
To be fair, Syracuse played great defense, but WVU just made too many stupid mistakes down the stretch.
Looking a lot like the 1997-1998 season where they started off hot and got pretty high in the rankings, and finished the season out of the top 25 and got a 10 seed in the NCAAs after being projected as a high seed earlier. :(
Hopefully they can win the last three. Get Louisville and Pitt at home and finish at Cincy and get at least 1 win in Big East tourney and get back up to a 4 seed or so. But I'm not very confident right now.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Only 5 have an RPI > 60 and Maryland (45) is struggling. Most of the 'experts' are projecting 4 at this point. A 5th team would have to finish 9-7 and even then, it's tough because beating the 12th seed in the 1st round wouldn't help the profile. The 5th seed would almost have to win 2 games in the tourney.

Well obviously it's far from certain at this point. I couldn't care less if they get in, but with a couple more wins, it's a possibility. They have 2 very winnable games remaining, @Clemson and home vs. Maryland. Their other game is @UNC.
But now that I look closer at their schedule they really don't have any good OOC wins. So you are right, they would need to win at least 2 games in the ACC tourney.

Big Ten Accepts Actions by Michigan and Michigan State Regarding Men's Basketball Incident
Big Ten accepts schools' actions and conclusions

Pursuant to Big Ten Conference policies, the conference office has received a joint report from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University regarding an incident that took place prior to their men's basketball game on Saturday, February 18, in East Lansing, Mich. Both schools acknowledge inappropriate contact between a Michigan State student and Michigan student-athlete Amadou Ba and have taken immediate action to review and respond to this incident. The conference office has accepted the following actions and conclusions:
1) Michigan State acknowledges that it has an obligation to provide security and protection for visiting teams per the Big Ten Protection of Visiting Teams Agreement (17.1.A.2.b) and that staff at the game should have interceded when the student first went onto the court. Michigan State has conducted a thorough review of game security procedures and will continue to take steps to enhance courtside security.
2) The Michigan State student exhibited inappropriate behavior.
3) The Michigan State student will receive counseling regarding appropriate fan behavior and will have his access to Michigan State men's basketball contests revoked for one and a half games.
4) In response to the Michigan State student's inappropriate behavior, Ba failed to exercise proper restraint, thus leading to his violation of the Big Ten Sportslike Conduct Agreement (10.01).
5) Ba has received counseling regarding appropriate responses to improper fan behavior and will be withheld for one and a half men's basketball games (50 percent of Michigan's remaining regular season contests).
The Big Ten Conference, Michigan and Michigan State also affirm their strong commitment to sportslike conduct from student-athletes and fans alike and will continue educational efforts regarding appropriate behavior during intercollegiate athletic events. The conference office intends to immediately reinforce its emphasis on security not only during games, but also prior to and after contests, to provide maximum protection for student-athletes, coaches and officials.
The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.

Notre Dame is officially the unluckiest team every. I think that's 9 Big East losses by a combined total of 27 points.
Painful to watch the final seconds knowing whatever they shot, even if it was a wide open dunk, they were still gonna miss it and lose by 1! Absolutely brutal, best 38 minute team in the nation ;)

In the Missouri Valley tonight, Southern Illinois goes down to Evansville. The MVC may get just 3 teams in (Witchita State, Creighton and N. Iowa).

So you are right, they would need to win at least 2 games in the ACC tourney.
vs. UNC and vs. BC are pretty good ACC wins. We've been close so many times on the road, but we're a young team and haven't learned yet how to win big games. We jumped on Maryland 13-0 and couldn't hold it, we were close @ NC state. The only team in the ACC that UVA can't beat is Duke. We're going to get hurt with our extremely weak out of conference schedule, which included losses against Fordham and Western Kentucky. But with the big win tonight, we still got some hope.

SIU has been playing like shit lately.
And did Deron Williams take Dee Brown's mojo w/ him to the NBA - the guy can't shoot worth a damn this season. -ohbfrank-
How did Illinois only go the line NINE times at home?
Props to the Wolverines for capitalizing at the line and only missing one free throw.
I have to stop looking at these predictions. Drives me nuts. Iowa a #3? Wisconsin a #5? George Mason a #7? Are they really that good?
He has the SEC getting 6 teams in and the MVC with 5. That's a mistake, IMHO.

Big game tonight in the ACC, UNC@NCSU. UNC moved into sole possession of 3rd place with BC's loss. NCSU sits alone in 2nd place. If UNC wins tonight, they will be tied with NCSU in the loss column and own the tiebreaker.
Some are saying this is the biggest game of Sendek's career. He has never defeated Roy Williams since he came to UNC, 0-5. You can bet some wolfpack fans will be calling for his head if he loses tonight.
I have a feeling GA Tech could pull off the upset tonight with Duke coming to town. They have lost a lot of close games lately. There is a lot of young talent on that GT team. They built a 20 point lead in the 1st half vs. UNC. They'll be even better when Thaddeus Young comes in next season.

Why not a 3 for Iowa? They're leading the B-10. They're 10th in the RPI and have a 8-4 record vs the RPI-Top 50. Who below them would you make a 3 instead of them right now?
No problem with a 5 for Wisconsin either. They're 12th in the RPI and are 6-4 vs the RPI-Top 50 and 11-4 vs the top-100.
I can see people having a problem with GMU being a 7, mainly because this is a case of few people having seen them. They do have a lofty RPI. I do think they are a tad overrated though - they should be an 8/9.

Look at their schedule. They have won very few, if any, big road games. All their big wins (NCState, Illinois, Ohio St, MSU, Michigan) have come at home. They beat MSU at home then follow it up with a loss on the road @Minn. They have lost games @Texas, @Illinois (by 15), @N Iowa, @Iowa St (by 12), @Wisc (by 14), @MSU (by 30), @N'western, @Minn (by 13). Not only are they getting beat consistently on the road, they are getting beat soundly. For some reason they play really well at home (undefeated). I would be willing to bet you they lose to @Illinois this week. They are a good team, no doubt. I guess its just the nature of college ball this year that teams like Iowa would get a 3 seed. I don't really see a team below them that I would move up. I think Washington deserves higher than a 7. Depending on what happens @NCState tonight, UNC might deserve higher than a 6. I'm not saying they deserve the 3 seed, but maybe move them up a spot or 2.

It's a huge game, especially in the eyes of the fans. Most of them despise UNC and 5 straight losses to them hasn't gone over too well. Going into the season with the outlook looking somewhat bleak for UNC, State fans thought they'd be able to win both games. Now they are concerned about being swept by the Heels. It would be a huge blow to their ego to get beat again.

I'm not saying this is the most important game of his career; however, this could very well be his "John Cooper" game (where it was Cooper's inability to beat Michigan, more than anything else, that led to his dismissal) wherein if he doesn't come out with a win the digruntled alumni is going to call for his head.

Holy Cross 9-3 -- at Colgate, vs Lehigh
Great rebound from the tough loss for Bucknell as they beat Lehigh to go to 22-4, 13-0. They clinch the PL regular season title and top-seed in the tourney. All the rest of their games will be in the friendly confines of Sojka Pavilion.

Pathetic and very un-Izzo like basketball. I don't get it. Hopefully they can pull it together. They haven't been playing terribly, just playing good teams on short rest. We seem a little ran down with all the minutes Belein plays his starters only using a 7 man rotation.

They do finish out with 3 home games against teams they've already beaten on the road, and their RPI is at 18 right now. Honestly I think even if they only win 2 of those 3 and lose in the first round of the Pac-10 tourney they'll still end up squeezing in. They'd have an 18-12 record but a pretty solid SOS and RPI.

 Billy Packer: it is amazing that the shot-blocking ability of Connecticut has been taken away by these Villanova guards - they're driving relentlessly to the basket
next 4 Nova possessions result in 4 or 5 blocks for UConn
Packer: they're doing a terrific job

Go there and register to get "VIP" access to the March Madness on demand. Only a set number of people can watch the games at one time and those who register now will get preference over general admission people and get put further up the "line" in the "waiting room."
I'm not optimistic that this system will work well, but its free so worth a shot given how sucky CBS's TV coverage of the first 3 rounds can be.

Thanks for the link. I already had a Sportsline ID, so that was easy.
Hopefully, I will not be using it much as I hope to travel with the Bison the first weekend. Then the 2nd weekend I already have my tickets to the DC Regional. That just leaves the alternate game on the Thursday 3rd round games, and hopefully, DC and Baltimore has some split coverage that night.

Lehigh had a nice surge in the 2nd half, but the Cross holds them off and clinches 2nd place in the Patriot. That means they host half of the PL tournament next weekend. Big win - I can't see Lehigh winning a semifinal game in Worcester next Sunday. Amazing that someone goes 11-3 in the PL and only finishes 3rd. That's gotta be a first.

UConn is wearing Nova down now. I really hope we get to see these 2 go at it again, maybe twice - on a neutral floor. Such a great contrast in styles. Smart move by UConn to play this on campus instead of the Hartford Civic Center.
Whoever goes further in the BE tourney should be top-seed in the DC regional. As Packer said, they both should be going to the Philly pod in the opening rounds. That will be a tough ticket.

And unfortunately, that is likely where Bucknell will be too if they win out. I'm guessing getting tickets through the school will be a lot more difficult than last year (I don't think they used their entire allotment in OKC).

There are too many variables to determine where Bucknell is going, although if they win out, an 8/9 game is certainly a strong possibility, and Philly would be a very likely destination, particularly if UConn and Nova are 1 seeds.
Price won't be an issue for me. If I can't get tickets through the school, I'll pay whatever to see them - plus I wouldn't have to worry about airfare to get to Philly.

Potential good news for Big-Ten fans. Big Ten ref and current AD at UNI (and former Bucknell AD) Rick Hartzell is one of three finalists for the University of New Mexico's athletic director job. If he gets that job, I assume he would become a Pac-10 or Big-12 ref.

The tickets the school gets are great seats. Last year it was $50 for two games, about 10 rows up from the floor, right at the foul line. Definitely try to go through the school first. Assuming we get in of course ;).
I'm guessing they'll end up as a 9 in Philly. Of course that could change, but it looks likely right now.

The Bucknell SID and I are good friends - we graduated the same year - he was the PA announcer and I was the shot clock operater (from our soph-senior years), so hopefully he can set me up. :)

Is he still on the selection committee? Speaking of Big Ten refs, a friend of mine who works for the IRS told me that he got a call recently from a Big Ten ref who has some significant tax problems. Unfortunately he couldn't remember the ref's name, even though I reeled off as many as I knew by name. If that had been me, I would have brokered a deal to solve his problem while Michigan got some good calls their way ;)

Indiana beats Michigan St-eek-
Refs took Paul Davis out early and its amazing all the crap they let Killingsworth get away with.
Just like Dials in the last game...and someone else in every other game. It really has been amazing how many times the refs have fucked State this year. the last two games are a perfect example: Opponent gets away with murder, Spartan gets touch fouls.
That said, they simply have no depth. if they win one game in the tourney i'll be amazed at this point.

When was Rick Hartzell on the selection committee. I can't see how someone who is an AD and ref could be on a selection committee. That's like being judge, jury, and executioner.
Rick seemed like a stand-up guy when I was at Bucknell and worked in the athletic dept, so I'd be surprised if that was him.

I'm sitting here with the Fla/Bama game on and realized how few SEC games I've watched this season even with Full Court. Is anybody else in the boat? I'll have to be careful when doing my brackets and making my bets in March.

My Shockers won the Missouri Valley Conference Title! Right now, they are the ONLY lock out of the Missouri Valley.
UNI had a tough loss and dropped all the way from 1st to 6th in a matter of a couple weeks. SIU dropped a game to Evansville and then picks up the victory vx. Northern Iowa? And red hot Missouri State defeats Creighton to jump into second out of no where.
All the talk of sending 5-6 teams, even 4 are probably all washed away. If Wichita State wins the tournament this weekend, then the MVC will probably send two teams depending on how things go. Otherwise, we could send two of three teams (Mo State, UNI, or Creighton). Somebody's probably going to get snubbed.
BTW, great KU game......loved it!

Well if you got the connections, you should hook a fellow DVDTalker up. :)
I think if the game is in Philly it will be really hard to get tickets. It's a day trip for students and lots of alum in the area as well. I wouldn't mind seeing them get sent to Salt Lake City or somewhere just to make it easier to get tickets.
Of course, assuming they make it. Don't want to put the cart before the horse. I have a feeling that they American/Lafeyette winner is going to give them a tough game.

UNC 81- Maryland 57.
Going to have to agree with you.
Maybe some hope at home on senior night against Miami, but I don't see them winning at UVA or in the ACC Tourney or NIT.

They have basically suckered me in for another year of the MM package, even though my local CBS shows the other 3 regions on its subchannels for free. The picture on the subchannels doesn't look that great on a widescreen TV, especially when you know DTV has a 2-3 games on at the same time in HD. Plus, when the local CBS decides to show a game in HD, the bandwidth needed means no games on the other two subchannels.
