Just so you know, that one isn't a TiVo. It is still a DVR, just not a TiVo.

Different user interface and different functionality. I haven't used the new DirecTV non-Tivo DVR, but I can tell you that if it is anything like cable DVRs, TiVo is infinitely better.

The new DirecTV DVR (without TiVo) has been getting some pretty poor reviews over at a few other boards. It drops recordings, it records repeats when you only want new, recordings disappear, etc. The software has gotten better in the last few months, but it has a long way to go. If you can find an actual DirecTiVo (on eBay or something), that might be the best option until the new DVR gets it's act together.

I have heard the same thing, but there are some big differences. The TiVo (Which I have, and it is great. It is also called the R10) only has a 30 min backlog. The R15 (The DirecTV DVR) has 90. It also has a phone-number-on-the-tv-screen-thingy. Also, it can record more, rated at 100 hours. They both have duel tuners, which is nice. So the choice is up to you. However, I have heard rumors that in the future (as early as 2007, as late as 2010) DirecTV will discontinue support of the TiVo units, because the only make about $1.67 per month on these out of the $5.99 per month you pay. The rest goes to TiVo. On the other hand, if you get the R15, they get all of the $5.99 you pay per month.
