Evidence that Lord of War is open matte, not cropped
I watched the movie last night and have to agree with the posters who said the movie does not look misframed. Furthermore, I now think it is very likely that the comparison on hometheaterforum showing that the DVD is cropped is based on a comparison of two different frames, and conveys the wrong impression of how the DVD is framed. The images posted there are very small, and not much to work with. However, this particular shot starts in mid close-up and the camera pulls back to reveal the edges. As can be seen by comparing my screen cap below, the DVD image has obvious additional area at the top and bottom of the frame. I also have not matched the exact frame, but the shot begins with the women's arms in a sort of "salute," so I have picked a frame just before they begin to drop their arms.

If anyone knows what DVD the trailer for this movie appears on, let me know, and I will compare some other frames to confirm once and for all whether or not the framing is open matte.

The dvd is not 'open matte' and is cropped if you look at the comarison here where you can see full size photos. Just because there is a tiny sliver of extra information on the top of the frame does not make it 'open matte' since the sides are heavily cropped.
This image has line comparison of the framing using the uncropped version.

Looking at the larger images in your links, and reviewing the DVD, it looks to me like you're right. The frames were correctly matched and the sides are heavily cropped. Now I wish I hadn't made my post to begin with.

You can delete it, you know? Wash it away like it never happened.
