Schedule of events:
http://www.nbcolympics.com/results/index.html

The TV schedule on that site is pretty good too. I believe that they are supposed to breakdown their coverage in half-hour blocks. This is good because of much of the coverage of lesser events is live in the morning/afternoon during works hours, in case you want to record stuff.

Expect all the marquee events (figure skating, speed skating (short & long track), and skiing for sure) to be held by NBC for tape delay airing in primetime. As such, as a courtesy to dvdtalkers, I ask that any results be spoilered until at least the event is aired on the east coast. West coasters - I don't know what you tell you - just avoid this thread during East Coast primetime hours if you don't want the know the results. This policy seemed to work pretty well during the Athens games 2 years ago.

I believe all the men's and women's ice hockey games are being broadcast live, and the US games commercial-free.

HD coverage on NBC-HD and Universal HD.

I'm very happy to see that Chris Witty is the U.S. flag-bearer. One of her older brother's was my cousin's best man at his wedding. Lucky bastard has gone to almost every Olympic games she has participated in - that would be so damn cool.

I am sad that I won't be able to see the opening ceremony tomorrow night in HD as I will be at my brother-in-law's. Oh well... :(

Hopefully Canada's men's hockey team plays more than one good game ;)

And hopefully Belarus doesn't make the final 4 in hockey, creating two really lame match-ups among the men's hockey finalists

And hopefully Slovakia can get revenge for getting screwed the last few games in hockey

Check that. It looks like CNBC will air curling each weekday (taped) from 5-8 pm. USA has live curling from 8-11 am most weekdays (with some coverage mixed in at other times.

Re: the thread title - the Games of the Olympiad are the summer games. While the correct designation of the summer games would be, e.g. "The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad", these winter games are simply the "XX Olympic Winter Games".

As for the broadcasts - I can barely stand this tape-delayed BS. I don't mind them having human-interest story driven prime time broadcasts that summarize the day's events, but for fuck's sake also show these events LIVE for those of us who actually care about the sports. And it's about time that they start using the official IOC medal count method that the rest of the planet uses, and stop pretending that two bronze finishes are equal in value to two golds.

I can appreciate the magnitude of a worldwide Olympic competition, and I can understand Michelle Kwan's importance to the collective United States team, but is a freaking press conference, complete with a team of doctors, really necessary? And why did Peter Uebberoth act like he was close to tears in making the announcement? Good Lord! They act like she was gunned down by an Iraqi death squad, or that her competing was going to bring about peace and harmony in the universe! She pulled a groin muscle, for crying out loud!

There was a change in the International Skating Federation rules allowing this change in 2005 but only a few skaters (notably Russian Irina Slutskaya) have taken advantage of wearing pants as part of the costume. Mind you, public reaction has not been very positive and Slutskaya has said she may drop the idea in future competitions.

I'm a little shocked by the way Team Canada is playing Women's Hockey. It's fairly apparent that the Russians, and whoever they played yesterday both suck ass. Is running the score up to the high teens with goals late in the third period really necessary? They won yesterday 16-0, and are up 7-0 at the close of the first period today. I could see anything under 10. But then start working on your transition game, or set up plays. We don't need any more breakaways.

It was a little much, but anything they threw at the Italian goalies was going in. They were just awful. During the 2nd and 3rd they were practicing plays, dumping it in, and giving 3rd and 4th liners some time, which is really all you can do to let up.

In the game today, the Russian team is just lazy. Canada's beating them to loose pucks, they're taking stupid penalties, and they can't even clear the zone. At least the Italian team showed some pride by not giving up. The Russians have packed it in, sans their goalie and a couple forwards.

Simply by getting rid of the ordinal system, it should be easier to understand. You add the short program total score to the long program total score and whomever has the most points wins.

Of course it is still subjective (as are many Olympic events), but if you can't get beyond that, then you shouldn't watch.

It's good to see the Canadian women off to such a good start. I think the only reason they may be running the score a bit, is the fact that they want to make sure they have home ice advantage, if there's a final between "us" and the States.

Klassen's performance was great (except for the end.) Having the two, or three pairs, come after her, was quite tense. It was nice to see two other Canadians in there, though.

I'm not a hockey expert. In fact, I despise it. The only time I watch it is in the Olympics. But how will there be a home ice advantage when they're both in Italy?

You add the short program total score to the long program total score and whomever has the most points wins.

Um, I think anyone had that much figured out. But how they get to that now is a mystery. They explained it last night and it sounded even more complicated before. Before, voting was on a 6 point scale, with the highest and lowest scores thrown out. I guess they still do that, but how they come up with the artistic and technical scores together. Who knows. It's bullshit. The Chinese pair last night got a gift score.

Oh well, moving on.

I'm about to miss the biggest benefit because I forget what it is, but the "home" team receives several advantages:

* They put the stick down second at face-offs.
* They get choice of uniform color.

Agreed. Even if she weren't one of the most storied athletes in the Winter Games' biggest event (finishing 1st or 2nd in 8 straight World Championships), NBC has made sure she's the most talked about person on top of that. I didn't support her entry into these games, but it's hard to deny her place in the sport.

-Mason Aguirre got robbed on his first finals run. That was a medal quality run, probably better than the one that got Kass the silver.
-Shaun White knew after his first run that he had won the gold. When he hits a good run, there is no one that can touch him. He's so used to winning I was surprised to see the emotion after winning. He's been around in snowboarding for what seems like forever, but he's only 19.
-Shaun White winning the gold in half pipe was probably the biggest lock of the olympics.

As much as I want the USA to win all the medals they possibly can I really enjoyed hearing about that jag off Bode Miller finishing 5th. Unfortunately, the loss probably wont shut his big mouthI don't understand the problem lots of people supposedly have with him. He was asked questions in an interview and he answered truthfully instead of dodging the bullet. And seriously, why does anyone give a flying fuck that he skied with a hangover? Who cares? He's still a freaking awesome skier. If anyone's keeping track, he finished ONE HALF of a second behind the leader. A HALF SECOND. The difference between 5th place and first place in that race was ONE SECOND! That hardly makes him a bad skier. The guy speaks his mind, it's more than a lot of people are brave enough to do.

Like Kornheiser, I can't fight the power of figure skating. I look at it as more art than sport, but I enjoy it nonetheless. Short track is cool, because it's fast, dangerous, and directly competitive. Anything where people are timed individually, particularly over long distances, bores the shit out of me. Skating in circles for 10,000 meters competing against a clock? Rah. Ice Hockey's always nice, because it's one of the only things that's an actual sport, not simply a race or a judged event. And, of course, I love Curling for reasons that defy logic.

Well, Ive been watching alot of these Olympics and really getting into them. I have to say I dont know much about the events and all as well, being born and raised in Florida, not a whole lot of winter sports love around. But Im getting to be a bigger fan. The one thing I admire about White is he lived up to the hype where it seems most of the Americans just arent doing. Which is usually typical in the Olympics, I just cant seem to fathom why. Anyways, with Miller, the one thing he does is bring some enthusiasm to a sport not very popular in many parts here in the US and thats always a good thing.
A question I have about luging. Now, I obviously dont know much about it, but what is it that actually makes one a better luger? I see where a better piece of equipment may help, but what are the people actually doing to be better. Just seems like luck to me, but this obviously shows my ignorance of the sport. My wife actually asked me this as I am the authority on sports in the house, and I made up some shit to tell her, but to be honest, I have no idea. Just didnt want to admit that I had no earthly clue to the wife.

Steering is obviously the most important aspect of luging.

I closely follow: figure skating (ladies and pairs only), men's hockey, skiing, ski jumping, luge/bobsled/skeleton, speed skating and curling.

I kind of follow: short-track speed skating, aerial ski jumping (is that what they call it?), and downhill snowboarding.

Clearly you missed the "Luge 101" featurette :) Seriously, as others have said, it's steering and body control (and a little bit the starting). You or I couldn't take the best sled and do well. Notice how the top guys rarely hit the sides -- they enter into the turns at just the right spot and are in the middle of the track in the straight-aways. If you were just riding along (without trying to steer), you'd be bouncing all over the place. Since things go so fast, the tiniest thing can send a sled off kilter. So the skill is that these guys can sense these perturbances, and make adjustments throughout the race.

I'm going to assume that it has its roots in some sort of scandinavian military exercise.

*ding* *ding* *ding*

History
The sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 when border patrol companies competed against each other. Gradually the sport became more common throughout Scandinavia as an alternative training for the military. Called military patrol, the combination of skiing and shooting was demonstrated at the Olympic Winter Games in 1924, 1928, 1936 and 1948, but did not gain Olympic recognition then, as the small number of competing countries disagreed on the rules (see also Governing body, below).

The first World Championship in the sport was held in 1958 in Austria, and in 1960 the sport was finally included in the Olympic Games. At Albertville in 1992, women were first allowed in Olympic biathlon.

It was sad to see three women fall in the downhill - all of them very hard to watch. The Canadian tore her ACL, and is going to be going back to Canada, for surgery. The American woman has no breaks, or visible injuries, but she's complaining of pain in her back - so, she could still compete. There's been no news on the French woman, who is the defending champ.

So how did the Chinese exactly win Silver there. Doesn't seem logical. I'm no figure skating expert, but one huge fall, a restart, and a few other botched landings. No matter how good the rest of the program was, isn't that enough to knock you out of Silver in the Olympics? TURIN, Italy (CP-AP) - A member of the U.S. women's hockey team says Canada's lopsided wins to date at the Turin Olympics are not helping the sport.

And defenceman Angela Ruggiero questions why the Canadian women put 16 goals past Italy and 12 past Russia.

''I'm upset that Canada has been running up the score, especially against the host nation,'' Ruggiero was quoted Monday on SI.com, Sports illustrated's website. ''There was no need for that. They're trying to pad their stats . . . Canada is running up the score for whatever reasons - personal, short-term.''

Shut the hell up. :)

Canada isn't the only team that's "running up the score." Sweden beat Italy 11-0, or something, today. They're just trying to score a lot of goals, so that they can get home ice advantage - as I said before.

Compared to NBC coverage it's bloody fantastic. Live all day on both CBC and Radio Canada (french) often showing different sports is good.

In my opinion, the only ways in which NBC is better is with their superior technology (in-race time comparisons, video synchronization, etc.) and I get to watch their coverage in HDTV. Well that, and CBC Brian Williams' rants get old.

Curling basics. 2 teams of 4 play 10 ends. Within each end each player has 4 rocks to throw or slide or whatever. To score you need to have your rock(s) closer to the center of the house (the circle area) after the final rock is slid in a particular end. You can get up to 8 points per end meaning you have 8 rocks in the house that are closer to the center than the oppposition's nearest rock) but that would have to be some lame competition.

The comemntators got me confused so I had to check the rules out.

Something I didn't know: I originally thought the brooms were used to scuff the ice, making the rocks slow down, where in fact the brooms are used to melt the ice in front of the rocks to smooth the ice making the tosses run true.

this part i knew. i snicker when they hit the opponents rock and the guy at the end sweeps real quick to make it go even further out of the ring.

CBC is just as bad. During both of the Canadian Womens' hockey games, they've cut to figure skating or speed skating in the third period. They usually show the end of the game, but it's annoying, because I'd rather watch the whole hockey game.
Are you kidding me??? You are complaining because CBC is cutting away from blowout games? I like to watch Canada win hockey games too but where's the drama in a 12-0 and 16-0 wins?
Both games were over before the end of the first period.

Now if the games were close, you would have a point...

So I'm watching the late late night curling (US vs Canada) and it is awful. The US women are getting schooled (went down 5-0 after 1 end, it is sitting at 10-3 now). The only thing they have going for them is that 2 of their players are HOT while the Canadians look like not hot.

kenbuzz
02-14-06, 09:39 AM
The US left a stone unprotected during the first end, and the Canadian skip's last stone easily cleared it out, leaving 5 in the rings. They blew the second end, missing with the last stone to give the Canucks an extra point, effectively ending the match. The US kept it to 10-5 going into the 8th end, but after Team Canada went up 11-5, the US conceded.

At least the Men's team are taking it to the Kiwis. It's 6-2 after 5 ends right now.

And yes, the Johnson sisters are HOT.

Within each end each player has 4 rocks to throw or slide or whatever.

It's actually 2 rocks per player (total of 16), not 4. The more rocks in play the more interesting it gets strategy wise. Which is why the rule that was implemented some years ago where you can't takeout the first four rocks (while taking your own rock out play too) is so good.

Why are the men better curlers?

This isn't the start of a joke but a real question. The men all seem to make amazing shots (double outs, etc.) while the women seem to struggle a lot more. I don't understand why there should be a difference. I see the difference in pool where the men can do stronger breaks, but curling seems to be all about finesse rather than power. Does the increased strength/speed of the men's brushwork/broomwork make the difference?

So how did the Chinese exactly win Silver there. Doesn't seem logical. I'm no figure skating expert, but one huge fall, a restart, and a few other botched landings. No matter how good the rest of the program was, isn't that enough to knock you out of Silver in the Olympics? (Though I have to admire her grit for toughin through that, medals are awarded by based on the circumstances)

That's exactly why I was arguing earlier that figure skating judges and their scoring system is bogus and completely full of shit. I didn't see it when it happened, because I vowed to stop watching the crooked sport. But I saw a replay and heard what happened, yet they still get the silver. BS! Basically, the rule is that on the first four rocks, if you throw the stone past the hog line but before the house, the stone is in the free-guard zone. Those rocks cannot be taken out on any of the first four shots. After the first four shots they are fair game. It basically prevents people from draw/takeout til the final end, which preserves last shot advantage, and then winning 1-0, 2-0.

Olympic spirit I guess. Thanks Norwegian guy! :)

PRAGELATO, Italy (CP) - When Sara Renner's ski pole snapped it was a disaster in the making.

It could have ended in heartbreak for Renner and teammate Beckie Scott. It would have been another blow for a wobbling Canadian Olympic team already staggered by missed opportunities.

History might record it was a Norwegian ski official, following the sport's unwritten tradition by handing Renner a new pole, that prevented Canada's Turin Games from jumping off the track.

But it was Renner's calm and a Herculean effort by Scott that gave the pair a silver medal Tuesday in the cross-country team sprint at the Winter Olympics.

"I don't even know what happened," a grinning Renner of Canmore, Alta., said after earning Canada's third medal of the Games.

"I just knew that all of a sudden I was kind of paddling with one arm.

"I didn't panic. I think a Norwegian gave me a new pole. It was a man's pole and it was really long. I was able to make it without losing too much time. It's not the best thing to happen, but at the same time, you can't give up."

It was Scott's second Olympic medal, to go with her pursuit gold from Salt Lake City. It came with Scott seriously considering retiring at the end of the World Cup season.

I really am rooting hard for the US during these games, but I actually found someone I will not root for. That scrawny punk men's figure skater Johnny Weir. The little blurb they put on about him where he had to put on his shades and say something along the lines of "I'm not here because I love to skate, I want to win the Gold," made it very easy for me to cheer against the US.

So far the sports I've enjoyed most are:
Downhill Skiing (alpine, moguls, combined, etc)
Short Track speed skating
Cross Country (Particularly the race where the Norwegian went down early and his mates slowed down the whole pack to wait for him)
Curling (this is really growing on me, especially the US womens  )
and
Women's hockey

What I'm most looking forward to:
More of the above
Men's Hockey
Snowboard Cross (I so want someone to get stuck in a flat :D)

It may seem sudden, because we only talk about it every 4 years, but it was popular 'round these parts in 2002 as well. Had it been televised more when added in 1998, I suspect it would have been popular then too.

Personally, I don't think the Johnson sisters are that "HOT!" They're nice looking girls, as are many of the women curlers, but not special enough that I'd watch 3 hours of people slowly sliding rocks across the ice if I didn't enjoy the <s>sport</s> contest itself.

I didn't see it when it happened, because I vowed to stop watching the crooked sport. But I saw a replay and heard what happened, yet they still get the silver. BS! Gritty determination on her part though.Yup, that's why I've always said that judged sports like figure skating, half-pipe, gymnastics, etc should either come up with a direct way of compairing the performance of the competitors or abandon the competition aspect completely and just let them do their thing as "exhibitions".

For example, in figure skating, let's see them add some barrel jumps. Whomever jumps the most barrels wins. Extra points if the barrels are on fire, or if you've got a female skater on your shoulders. For half pipe, set up a row of Mountain Dew cans... the piper who can get the most righteous buzz by downing the most Dew wins. Bonus points for substituting Jolt or Red Bull.

For things like the 90m ski jump, get rid of the judging aspect completely. The longest jump wins. If they're off line, they're already being penalized because they've wasted some of your energy by going sideways, but if there must be a penalty, just subtract the distance they're off-center from their jump length (just like they do it for Punt, Pass & Kick). If anything but your skis hit the ground, it's a zero.

Bobsled, luge, speed skating -- it's you against the clock. Hockey, curling -- it's team vs team, the most points wins. Short track -- man-on-man, first to the finish line wins. All of these formats are fine with me. It's the judged sports that always give me the most heartburn, and I'd like to see 'em all get fixed.

(PS - This is essentially the same argument as my annual anti-BCS rants -- judging/opinion Bad, quantifiable on-field performance Good.)

Well I only watched some of the game as I was really watching Slovakia-Russia (a good game that was), but the U.S. seemed fine, just wasn't finishing (which was odd cause I did see them finish two goals early one). That being said, this U.S. team isn't very talented. Among the "big 7", I'd say only Finland would be behind them, and that's because Finland's missing its top 2 goalies and top defenseman.

Still, this is a pretty poor result for the U.S. I was thinking the U.S. was staring down a quartfinals match-up with Canada, but now it's possible they might not even make the tournament (although they likely will).
