Sony to showcase PS3 at Taipei Game Show Feb 16-20

http://digitimes.com/systems/a20060209A8050.html

Sony will showcase the PlayStation 3 (PS3) at the upcoming Taipei Game Show (TGS) 2006, which takes place between February 16-20. This will be a first Taipei showing for Sony’s new game console, prior to the official worldwide launch of the unit, although Sony has already shown the PS3 in the US and Japan.

Sony’s exhibit will occupy a total of 80 booths at the TGS show, including 20 booths allocated exclusively for the PS3, according to a February 9 report in the Chinese-language Commercial Times.

The Taipei showing is a move, by Sony, in a marketing campaign against its rival Microsoft, which will begin to market its Xbox 360 in Taiwan, starting March 16, the paper said.

In addition to a recent announcement of lower prices for the Xbox 360 when it first goes on sale, Microsoft Taiwan also stated on February 8 that it will market a total of 19 game titles for the Xbox 360, to coincide with its official launch in Taipei, instead of 15 titles as originally planned, according to the report.

The 19 titles include PGR 3 (Project Gotham Racing 3), designed by Microsoft Game Studios, NBA 6 by Electronic Arts, Call of Duty 2 by Activision, Ridge Racer 6 by Namco, and Dead or Alive 4 by Tecmo, the report stated.

I cannot believe Microsoft is worrying about sending units to Taiwan when US shelves STILL sit empty.

I'm starting to think it's deliberate in order to both keep Xbox 360 in the news and to keep the demand high. I've already read more than a few cases where people have bought one simply due to the low supply. If there was ample supply the "second-thought" crowd would actually have the time to think over the purchase instead of grabbing one in the heat of the moment just because they found one.

Well they dont seem to be going over retail much on ebay anymore so I would think that has backfired on them.

They've shown the PS3 in the US and Japan? I thought they've only displayed the likely-to-be-used concept?

I think this is the first time there will be playable games shown. I'm fairly excited to see if they live up to the hype.

Are you sure? It doesn't say that in the article. I really hope they're moving ahead in the PS3 because the signs for a summer launch aren't very promising so far.

Oh well, I preordered yesterday.

No, I'm just speculating, but it makes sense.

Where did you preorder at?

I'm with you. Why would Sony pick Taiwan to totally unveil a playable PS3? Just sounds like an odd choice.

What else are they going to do with 20 PS3 booths?

Show off the MGS 4 trailer again?

from the article it sounds like they arent showing anything new and will just have what we have seen already only now it will be in Taipei. I hope they actually have some playable games and some solid info, but I wont hold my breath.

I preordered at GameCrazy. Apparently I'm about 45th. Doesn't sound too promising, but the sales clerk said "We're guaranteeing all current preorders that we take ... for now" I have no idea if that "guarantee" is of any value and I might very well cancel if I get a low preorder number from EB Games. I just wanted something down and I was getting sick of waiting for EB Games to take my damn money.

EB Games waits for a release date and MSRP before taking pre-orders. I pre-ordered mine at FYE. #1 on the list.

How much do you have to put down for a preorder there?
