Magnolia DVD Sound Question

Ok, don't kill me if this has been in another thread. I searched it and all I got were comments about the soundtrack, but not about this particular thing.

Anyways, doesn't anyone else have a problem with the very last scene of the movie? I cannot understand what's being said without the subtitles because the music drowns out everything else. Was this meant to happen? Judging from the subtitles I'm guessing what's being said is important and should be heard, but I seriously cannot tweak my sound levels to fix this problem.

So is this how it's supposed to be? And is anyone else encountering this? This isn't a new problem, but it's finally getting to me.

This is DEFINITELY how it is supposed to be. I saw the film theatrically, and it was the exact sameway. The song is pretty much more important than the dialogue in that scene, anyway.

Kinda funny you bring this up. I just got my roommate to check out this flick, and now I really want to rewatch it again (I haven't seen in it a few years now). Such an amazing film.

Intentional. PTA really loves having music play a big part in his films, and also doesn't mind if it drowns out dialogue... the ending of Magnolia is perfect in that way. If that really bothered you though, don't even attempt to watch Punch-Drunk Love....

You have to turn your volume up to 82 to hear the dialogue in that scene.

you were never really meant to be able to understand the dialogue. the expressions on Melora Walters face was what was important in the scene. The fact that the subtitles clearly tell you the dialogue is sort of cheating..... but you aren't meant to be able to clearly understand what is being said word for word. The gist of the conversation should be evident by the situation.

I noticed some instances of that, when I recently watched my SE DVD, for the first time. It was annoying, but as others said, I guess it's just how it was meant to be.
