At least we got the Capitals coming up next saturday. The Pens always beat the Caps! Time to get back to a one game win streak. :)

I can. Belfour has been playing a lot better as of late, and he's a really good goalie. I have confidence in Belfour AND Mikael Tellqvist (who is amazing.)
As for Eric Lindros' return - it's weird. I keep hearing different things. Last week, I heard that he was thinking of returning sometime this week, but that never happened. I never heard anything after that. I believe he has been practising though, so that's a good sign. Hopefully he can return soon.

The Leafs played well tonight, in a 4-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers. It was a rough game. Bryan McCabe got injured in the first period, when he was bodychecked from behind by Serge Aubin (I believe), which led to a five minute powerplay for the Leafs. McCabe only missed one shift, as it wasn't anything serious (surprisingly, considering McCabe seemed to think it was his groin again.) Supposedly his leg went numb for a second, but then came back, and he felt alright. I'm glad he's alright.

The Kings allowed the Wild to score 5 PP goals tonight, a team record. They've allowed something in the range of 25+ PP goals in the last 12 games. They have lost 6 straight, and have fallen to the last playoff spot in the West. They are in dangering of missing the playoffs altogether.

Jose Theodore used to be an amazing goalie, but he hasn't been playing very well (at all), recently. Huet has taken over and played incredibly well for the Canadiens, so Theodore is probably going to be gone by the trade deadline, or sometime during the off-season.

With the gambling and now this, not a good week for the NHL....
A Canadian-born NHL player who was on Canada's preliminary 81-man Olympic eligibility list but who is not on the final Olympic team 23-man roster or three-man taxi squad has tested positive for a prohibited substance, TSN has learned.
But unlike the Bryan Berard situation – the American-born NHLer who last month received a two-year international hockey ban as a result of a positive test for an anabolic steroid – this case involving a Canadian-born player has yet to fully work its way through the procedural system and, in fact, the unidentified player in question has yet to have his appeal heard by an arbitrator.
Which is to suggest it's still an open file and, at this point, the final outcome of this case remains in doubt.
And, sources tell TSN, the prohibited substance that resulted in this positive test, which was reportedly carried out in November or December as part of pre-Olympic testing, was not an anabolic steroid but a “masking agent” for steroids that is commonly found in hair restoration drugs, with brand names such as Rogaine and Propecia.
Still, it's a designated World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited substance that has resulted in disciplinary action against other athletes. In fact, a former Olympic bobsledding teammate of Prince Albert II of Monaco was suspended Wednesday for a positive test for a hair restoration drug banned because of its steroid-masking properties. Monaco's anti-doping committee suspended Sebastien Gattuso for six months after he tested positive in October for “finasteride.” But it's also entirely possible an athlete could be using these products for purposes other than performance enhancement, or the masking of performance enhancing substances.
This type of issue is front and centre at the Olympics in Turin today.
U.S. skeleton racer Zach Lund of Salt Lake City, a potential gold medal favorite, was in an arbitration hearing today to determine his Olympic eligibility because of a failed test that turned up the same “masking agent” that is associated with hair loss products. Lund said the positive test was because he was taking the product for hair loss. A ruling on his eligibility for the Olympics is expected by the end of the week.
Sources in Turin tell TSN an arbitrator has been named to hear the Canadian-born NHLer's appeal, but that no date has yet to be scheduled for that hearing, which will be heard by the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada. The arbitrator will hear the case and rule either in favor of the player or against him. If the ruling is favorable to the player, no announcement is forthcoming. If, however, the arbitrator's decision goes against the player's appeal, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport will make the player's name public and announce the appropriate sanctions, which at worst includes a two-year ban on international hockey. None of the various governing bodies who preside over the broad spectrum of athlete testing and doping control are permitted to identify any player or athlete until such time the appeal process is completed and only if the athlete's appeal is rejected.
If the Berard case is any indication, even if the Canadian player were to be sanctioned internationally, it would have no impact on his NHL status as the NHL has decided pre-Olympic testing conducted prior to the Jan. 15, 2006, institution of the league's drug-testing program is not recognized as a violation of the league program.
To fully understand where this specific situation is at, one must have some understanding of the rules and procedure for the testing of Olympic athletes.
The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) is the designated body in this country that carries out Olympic drug testing on behalf of the International Olympic Committee.
Once Hockey Canada named its 81-man Olympic eligibility list in the fall, any player on that list was eligible to be randomly tested by the CCES.
The CCES is entitled to collect a sample in the six months leading up to the Olympics. For players who were named to the final Olympic team roster, every one of them is tested prior to the Olympics. As for pre-Olympic testing, the sample is sent to an approved laboratory in Montreal, where the sample is analyzed for prohibited substances on the WADA list.
If a positive test occurs, termed an "adverse analytic finding (AAF)," the CCES swings into action. It contacts the player to inform him of the AAF, it contacts the governing body for the sport – in this case it's Hockey Canada – and the CCES immediately conducts an initial in-house review. The athlete is given an opportunity to explain himself and the CCES reviews all forms and information supplied at the time of testing.
One of the key elements of the testing protocol is a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) form, which gives the athlete an opportunity prior to testing to list all drugs, medications and supplements that the athlete uses as part of treating medical or health issues. If the positive test, or AAF, is as a result of something on the TUE form, it allows the CCES to instantly see what may have caused the positive test. The CCES has an in-house tribunal which assesses these situations and has the power to either dismiss the positive test or proceed with discipline, depending upon what's listed on the TUE.
If, however, there is no TUE filed or the prohibited substance in question is not related to any items on the TUE, then the CCES moves to the next stage, which is to formally assert a violation and propose a penalty, which more often than not is a two-year ban from international competition, although it varies depending upon the severity of the violation.
At that point, the athlete has two options. Either waive the right to an appeal and accept the punishment or contest the CCES ruling by requesting an appeal.
If the appeal is requested, it is submitted to the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC), which appoints an independent arbitrator to hear the case. The athlete, as well as the athlete's governing body (in this case Hockey Canada), get standing in the appeal as does the CCES. The appeal is heard and the arbitrator must make a final and binding ruling within 20 days of the hearing.
If the athlete's appeal is ruled on favorably by the SDRCC arbitrator, the matter is closed and the athlete's name is never revealed. If, however, the arbitrator rules against the athlete's appeal, the CCES formally and publicly announces the violation and the sanctions.
There is one final avenue of appeal for the athlete and that is to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
As for this specific case involving the Canadian-born NHL player, sources say he's currently waiting for a hearing with the SDRCC arbitrator. Sources suggest the player in question has been using a hair restoration drug for many years and it's not being used as a “masking agent” for steroid use, and that is precisely the issue the arbitrator must rule on.
He's either masking the roids or losing his hair...Hopefully it's the latter.

MYRON COPE SUPPORTS PENGUINS IN POST-GAZETTE LETTER
02/08/2006
The following letter to the editor, written by long-time Pittsburgh media icon Myron Cope, appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Wednesday:
As a sportscaster, I made it my policy to keep my nose out of political issues except when they affected sports. The Penguins' pursuit of the Pittsburgh slots license falls into that category.
Two possibly relevant memories cross my mind.
1) I once interviewed Art Rooney for a 1970 book I was writing, "The Game That Was." To my surprise, he revealed that in the early 1950s he had turned aside five offers -- "fantastic offers" -- to move the Steelers. Baltimore, Buffalo, Atlanta, New Orleans, Cincinnati -- offers came from all five.
The Chief told me: "If you didn't care for the city or its people ... you could have picked up and gone."
He then made a point that bears on our possible loss of the Pens. He mentioned datelines. (Traveling reporters covering a Pens game here start their stories with one word: PITTSBURGH.) Mr. Rooney said: "When you lose your dateline, your city has suffered an important loss."
2) Leaders in the Cleveland area did not believe Art Modell would move his football team, then stuck in ancient Cleveland Municipal Stadium. They built new structures for baseball and basketball and a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Right or wrong, Mr. Modell abruptly took his franchise to Baltimore. A great football city went quiet for five years.
I do not know all the particulars of the Pens' proposal for an arena privately funded by a major casino operator, nor do I claim an expert's opinion of its practicality. But I blinked at Gov. Ed Rendell's stated reservation about the proposal. Also, I puzzled over Mayor Bob O'Connor and county Chief Executive Dan Onorato still being walls of silence.
I now have read that all three gentlemen have received campaign contributions from the Cleveland developer seeking the slots license ("Ratners Try, Try, Try, Try Again for Casino," Jan. 29) with a plan, I suspect, that would give us a gigantic South Side traffic jam.
From the sideline, I earnestly hope campaign money from any source will not carry the day.
It would be a real shame if a couple paid-off politicians are the reason Pittsburgh loses the Penguins.

Pens are playing tough. Good to see some love between Recchi & Crosby.
I feel bad for Konstantin Kolstov. The kid can't buy a goal this season. He seems like he's got such high potential. But it looks like he's heading down the 1st round pick bust.

That would be sweet.
I keep hearing/reading that Malkin is tearing up the Super League. And people like Kovalchuk & Ovechkin say the kid is tremendous. The only thing that puts any, albeit little, doubt about the translation from the Russian SL to the NHL is that former Pens player Alexey Morozov is 1 point ahead of Malkin for the points lead. While Morozov flashed some serious skills, especially against New Jersey :), he went through serious scoring droughts. But again, too many people are praising Malkin too highly to really have any doubt that he's gonna kick ass once he gets to Pittsburgh. (Yes, I'm still hopelessly optimistic that the team will be able to stay)
And the Pens get to take a 2 game winning streak into the Olympic break. Yeah, I know they haven't played the Caps yet, but c'mon, the Caps are the Pens BITCHES!!! ;)
And speaking of today's game against the Caps. How long before a Cap takes a good shot at Whitney for the accidental spear he gave Ovechkin in their last game together?

Next year for the fantasy league, we need to make it 10 teams of people actually interested in playing. Always happens like this, everyone says "I am committed to playing the whole season!" By mid season, there are at least 4 or 5 teams sitting idle.

If you look at the league activity page, you can see that only two people, aside from JJD, have not made some kind of activity in February. People might not be trading or modifying their rosters a lot, but they are still watching and managing their teams.

Its happened in both of my leagues on yahoo already. One league there must be only the top 5 teams plus one of the bottom place teams (outta 12) doing moves etc. That "bottom" team, yours truly. The other league (10 teams) its a little better with the top 6 or so teams doing moves. Sucks especially when some of those bottom place teams have good players who deserved to be on a team whose owner wants to play. (I asked for those players-giving just as good as players in return but not even a rejected email sent back to me-just those 10 days are up-trade canceled. I've sent email to the commish asking maybe put players on waivers etc and he said he can't do it.) I even had some shutout weeks (10-0 etc) but those are tainted because your playing a team whose lineup includes 5 NA or IR players, goalies who are now backups etc. Totally sucks but what are you going to do.
At least in my offline league, we charge $50 to enter so theres, hey I paid that much to enter, I'm not going to just foldup and quit because my team sucks. We haven't had anyone quit in the 5-6 years of us doing the league. (Theres incentive not too as the last four teams still play on in a consolation playoffs and theres a small prize at the end for the winner there.)
LB...GO SABRES!
lets beat those Panthers at least once this season!

The Pens put out another solid effort tonight, beating the Caps 6-3. Good thing we've got this two and a half week break now that the Pens are actually playing decent.

Just got back from the Pens/Caps game. Fleury stole the game in the first period, and the rest of the team put a great effort to support him the rest of the way.
Can any Caps fans tell me what was being chanted anytime Gonchar (#1 star) touched the puck? It sounded like "coo-coo-coo".
On a side note, I never realized how out-dated Mellon Arena was until I saw the MCI Center tonight. Wow, that place is nice. I hope the Pens and Pittsburgh gets a facility like that.

I had the same revelation when I went to an Avs game at the Pepsi Center. After being in an arena like that it makes the Mellon Arena seem like a dungeon.

I couldn't tell what the hell they were doing either. I didn't notice it at first, but then it became pretty clear they were doing it every time he had the puck. I thought it was some kind of eagle call at first. Sucks for them that Gonchar had a 4 point night (1G 3A), I believe.
I gotta see what the game looked & sounded like on tv. Almost 1/2 the crowd that was there were there for the Pens.
MAF got the #2 star but he should've been #1. He only gave up one solid goal, that being the SH from Ovi. The other took a bad bounce off the D, I think it was Jackman. And I ain't counting the garbage time goal.
Did Cairns get ejected? I don't remember seeing him after the fight he was involved in.

This is a Caps thing that goes back to Larry Murphy. When he left he got the "whoop whoop whoop" taunts as in Larry of The Three Stooges on any return visit. It has been adopted for other now departed Caps.
Here is a brief article on it:
http://www.washingtoncaps.com/display_cont.asp?cont_id=223908
Whoop, There It Is - Edmonton center Adam Oates had his Hall of Fame status confirmed by the leather-lunged denizens of the cheap seats on Sunday. Each time Oates touched the puck, he was serenaded with a chorus of "whoop, whoop, whoop," a rather curious Washington hockey tradition that began with former Caps defenseman Larry Murphy.
Along with Murphy, other former Caps who have been on the receiving end of the "whoop" chant have included Kevin Hatcher, Phil Housley and Scott Stevens.
Oates, Murphy, Housley and Stevens are good bets to be eventually enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

I agree. And I think if he hadn't given up that last goal at the end of the game, and Gonchar wasn't playing his first game back in Washington, it would have happened.
