If so, when did this happen? I had put off buying the MGM disc because I already own the Criterion edition. I recently had the urge to watch it again, so I looked to order the MGM SE for the anamorphic transfer and couldn't find it in stock anywhere online.
Most stores only have one version in stock
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00026L7OK/
Widescreen SE out of stock
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005LINC/
It looks like a barebones fullscreen disc. Why does MGM do this? Why not discontinue the Fullscreen copy, and why drop the extras. Very annoying; they've discontinued several SE's and released new discs without any extras.
Oh well, I took my chances on ebay and bought a new/sealed copy of the Widescreen SE for about $12 shipped.

Dumb move on MGM.

I think it is. I don't remember where or when I read it, but when I hear that a disc I have is going OOP I note it in my collection and I checked and see that I have done that with MGM's SotL.

dvdaficianado has it listed as OOP. Along with the CC, and Image dvd. Perhaps a new edition is on the way.

"Young Hannibal" is a Weinstein Co. film so Sony definitely WON'T be adding a free ticket.

I found a new copy at my local Zellers, and I'm considering buying it. I only own the film on VHS, so I definitely do need to upgrade. $15 isn't bad.

All the Anchor Bay? Even the Japanese MGM with DTS? Maybe, just maybe, it'll get a proper Region 1 release, but as it's in Sony's hands, unlikely.

MGM has recently (I believe within the last month or two) released a 2-disc edition of "Silence" overseas. It has all the extras from the previous MGM special edition plus new ones produced by Laurent Bouzereau, though the Criterion extras aren't included, though that will probably always be the case. I'd be shocked if this edition wasn't released around the time of the prequel.
Earlier I also ruled out the possibility that Sony would include a ticket for the prequel since it was coming from a competing studio. That was the case then but since then MGM (obviously a subsidiary of Sony now) has entered into an agreement with the Weinstein Co. for theatrical distribution.
If MGM distributes "Young Hannibal" theatrically it would be very possible to see a free ticket with the new "Silence" DVD, and they could also use the opportunity to throw a trailer and short featurette on there like most catalogue titles that tie into upcoming theatrical releases.

I just picked the SE up tonight. It's weird that it seems to be available now, all of a sudden (as I said before, I found 2 copies at one store, and my friend saw it at another store.) It could be nothing more than a weird coincidence, though.

The Widescreen SE was listed (http://dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=404315&page=6&pp=25) OOP the 2nd week of August 2005. The Pan & Scan may not be considered officially OOP due to stock still in distributors' stocks.

Why did the WS version suddenly go OOP? Are they preparing for another super duper edition or something, seeing it's Sony in control now?

I believe they did this with all of the Hannibal Lecter movies. Can't find Hannibal, Manhunter, or Red Dragon in widescreen. At least around here.

Because Sony are dumbasses and cater to the lowest common denominator. They believe that DVDs are made for Joe Six-Pack and have decided that most consumers prefer fullscreen, so they discontinue the WS versions of the DVD. They have done this with a lot more films like Gattaca, the Fan, the Juror, the Bear, Sweet and Lowdown and we can go on and on.

The reason you can't find Manhunter in widescreen is that MGM owns the rights and they've never released it in widescreen. Anchor Bay released three widescreen editions but they no longer have the rights to all of their versions are out-of-print.
MGM's release is the only one to include the true theatrical cut (and there's a very memorable scene between Graham & Crawford that's missing from every Anchor Bay edition) so it's a shame that they've only released it in fullscreen. I own all 4 cuts of "Manhunter" on DVD and they're all compromised in some way. The longest version (the "director's cut") has horrible video quality, the one with the best video quality (Anchor Bay's fake theatrical cut) is the worst cut, the additional scenes in Mann's "restored director's cut" look horrible compared to the rest of the film and the theatrical cut is MAR.
Oh well, it doesn't really matter anyway, "Red Dragon" was much better.

I just checked Deja-Vu Discs' (a used CD/DVD/game store, here in Ontario) website, and it says that they have the Silence of the Lambs Criterion available, at one of the local stores. They want $37.99 (CAD) for it. Do you think it's worth it? It seems to be in pretty high demand, but the prices on Ebay seem to be low compared to Amazon ($69.99 and up for new/used from sellers.) I've got them holding it for me, but I'm able to cancel my order.

The main reason the Criterion is in demand is it still has one of the 5 best commentary tracks ever. The other bonuses are cool, but you can live without them, but that commentary track is amazing...
