I don't watch hockey. I can't stand to watch it. But it's weird that I think it's probably the funnest sport to play on a videogame system. I just got NHL 06. I'm not sure on some of the rules. I figured out was Icing was. But I'm still confused on offsides. Also I'm confused on how players go on and off the ice. Do the same players play offense and defence? Sometimes when I'm on defence a few of my players won't be on the ice but when I get the puck back they are on the ice? Thanks for the help!

wow...where to begin...I think u NEED to watch a hockey game if you're struggling this much with the games :)
offsides is when a on player on your team is in the attack zone and the puck is not yet there...but it soon enters the attack zone thus OFFSIDES...all players must be behind the blue line or int he neutral zone before a person of the same team can enter witht he puck and touch it...
as for the other shit...yes, unlike what your middle school gym teacher likely told you, defensemen can shoot the puck and enter the attack zone, however they often stay at the point to avoid a fast break byt he other team
as for the last part of ur question, it may be agame issue, like your aggression is too up...if you are back on defense in youre own end the offensive players shoudl drop back and shouldnt be at the red line ro changing lines!

additionally...if u want a very unrealistic game, turn ur fatigue off, along with line auto line shifts and ur starting 5 will always be on the ice...
for the most realistic game...turn ur line shits ON to manual, u will have to sub ont he fly just like in real hockey or when the puck is frozen...this way players dont get too tired, etc...
most common is auto shifts, where the cpu will auto matically sub ur dudes when they get tired for the 2nd line, 3rd line, check line, etc...

Offsides was my main concern. Thanks for the info! I wouldn't say I'm struggling. I'm 4-1 on medium difficulty. ;)
Those give a bit more formal explanation. I've never played NHL06, so I don't know if it implements what's referred to as the "tag-up" offsides rule. If the attacking team dumps the puck into the opposing teams zone, while one of their own players is already in the zone, the play is not immediately called offsides. The attacking team's players are given a chance to clear the zone. As soon as all attacking players clear the zone they may then enter the zone and the offsides is negated. If the puck is brought out of the zone by the defensive team before the attacking team clears the zone the offsides is waved off in this case as well. Offsides will be called if the attacking team touches the puck while clearing out of the zone or if they do not attempt to get out of the zone.
