In seeing other threads talking about news articles on big collections, showing your HT, and various other similarities, I was curious as to how many ADDICTS there are on this board.
Just about everyone I know has roughly about 50 DVD's with a few that have about 100-200. I've waded through the show you HT thread and seen that there are a good many that have a nice library of DVD's.
But how many of you are true collectors to have amassed what my friends call "too many" shiny discs?
In talking to my coworkers today about the subject, I told them that I just hit the 2000 mark and jaws hit the floor.
How many of you have hit at least the 1000 mark? And if higher, how big?
How do people react to you telling them how many DVD's you do have?
Does looking at your collection make you feel proud of the accomplishment?
I'm really curious to know as I really don't think my collection size is that big a deal because they're all films I enjoy watching, but still can't help but feel proud of the library I've accumulated.
Give us your thoughts...

I've got somewhere between 500 and 600. First DVD I ever got was in 1997, the original snapper release of "Goldeneye". I was working at Sears, and that was the demo disc they sent us to play. It was an RCA player, and it displaced our venerated Laserdisc player that had show "Lion King" over 2000 times. Ah, the good ole days.

I figure anyone who has over 2000 DVDs, who says that people with 1000+ are nutjobs, is going for humor, not insults...
Anyway, I am right around 1000, myself. I've sold a few, and I don't have everything entered, so I am not sure of the exact figure.

About 1200 dvds, but I think I am pretty much maxed out. Very little shelf space left in the current house, and I'll be waiting and looking at the HD offerings from this point forward. Very happy Netflix has announced immediate availability for renting HD titles.

I'm still inputting into profiler (so if you click it, the collection isn't all there), but I have approx. 1350 (from my excel list on my comp). I've greatly slowed down over the last year though, only buying a FEW big releases...although I still buy TV boxsets like mad...I have slowed in anticipation of HD...but once that comes out, I assume the ship will be sailing full speed ahead (may need to build more shelves)...
I do have the biggest collection of any of my friends...but most of my friends are like me, 25yrs just out of school, working for pennies to pay back a student loan...now if I hadn't bought ANY dvds, I probably wouldn't have needed a student loan, but seriously, what's the point of even going to film school if you're not going to be able to WATCH a lot of films... DVDs have been worth more to me than my friggin' education, so I'm quite happy and proud of my collection, even if it means I'll be in the hole for a while...

Personally i have around the 600 mark. But to be honest i think that anyone who has more than 1000 films is wasting a hell of a lot of money. Those kinds of people will buy new versions of all these films again on Blu-ray no doubt. I think there is a point where it becomes a little silly. Who has the time to rewatch such collections. Large DVD collections or any large collection of anything in general is usually for rich kid types who's parents do not have an idea about how to properly raise children with the right respect for money, or people who are so sad that they simply don't have a life at all.

Well, I have 1120 according to DVDAF. I have sold a few hundred so I have been around 1500. I also have around 100 LD. I do not plan to rebuy much of my catalog on BD or HD-DVD. Maybe certain films, Matrix etc. I actually would probably sell a lot of them, but the going price is so little, I would rather just keep them. I am a big movie fan and enjoy watching them at home, so I guess I "have no life at all." Yes, I should manage my money better, it would make my life easier and probably better if I did not buy DVDs, but I gain enjoyment from my collection so it is a tradeoff I can live with for now.

I just hit 150 titles and to me that's a lot. My family and friends probably think it's too many. They'd probably have me sent to a mental hospital if I was over 1,000.
I'd hate to have over 1,000 DVDs and be faced with the question of buying them all over again on a new format. That would be horrific.
I try to set a high bar for what I buy. It has to be something that I not only like, but will want to watch repeatedly. I don't need to buy every movie I like. Sentimentality/nostalgia is also a motivator, for old movies and TV shows. Used to be that was all it took. Now, I factor in price, too. I look for the great deals.

I'm 15 titles away from 600. Granted, I've been "collecting" maybe 3 years now, and have flipped atleast 200 movies in that time, be it financial hardships, upgrades, or loss of interest in a film. I have the luxury of 3 free rentals a night working at Hollywood, and I usually take advantage of that. I'm incredibly picky, and not to mention frugal, paying an average of $5 per DVD I add to my collection by way of pawn shops and used video game stores.
1,000 isn't so nutty; you don't criticize your local library for having "too much" stuff to read, do ya? Granted, it's quite the investment, but just as long as said collectors have their priorities in order, there's nothing wrong with a larger than normal DVD library.

I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 at the moment. I have probably sold at least 200 more at some point. My buying has sharply decreased as I have tried to actually sit down and watch everything (at least half of the collection is unwatched). I just takes so long, especially with TV shows where a single season may take a week to watch. I am really trying to limit myslef to titles I really want to see badly and absolutely great deals.

Over 700 here. My buying has seriously slowed due to space issues and the need to start saving for a new house (for more DVD's of course...and the fact that our house has shrunk considerably since having another baby 2 years ago). I may reach 1000 when I go over to the Blu-ray/HD camp but I'm going to wait a while for that. I have never been an early adopter of new tech. I like for it to be established before I take the plunge so I don't end up buying something that will join the Betamax and DIVX players of the past.

I am in my 30's not rich. But, I work for my money and spend it the way I like. And most of my dvd's came from the internet craze a few years back. Companies like Reel.com were having insane deals. For example. They would have a dvd for 50% off then have multiple use coupons for $5 off. And also give free shipping. 800.com had a deal 3 dvd's for $1 (incl.shipping). Granted most of these companies went bankrupt. But, I was able to get a lot more dvd's than I normally would have gotten.

Thats a load of horse shit. Silly to you....a serious passion for someone else. Some of us actually work for a living and can afford, through hard work, to do whatever we want if we work/try hard enough. Also, a large film library is just that...a library. You don't need to shove everything down your throat all at once. Whats the fucking hurry? Are they going to melt? C'mon people....think!

1443 DVDs, 1815 titles according to DVDAF(in sig). About 200 more that I have yet to get DVDAF to approve of - took me two months to get one title listed - and many of the wife's and kids' DVDs are not listed either. So let's say around 2000. I have just passed 1,000 this month but purchases are slowing.
The main reason for buying so many is the lack of other entertainment options for someone who lives in a regional area. If you don't want to get drunk every night there is simply nothing else to do. No nightclubs, entertainment facilities, 50km to the nearest movie theatre, no access to cable or satelite television, so DVD's become the main source of entertainment.

I didn't always downplay the library....it used to be something I wanted people to see. Then a few years ago I stopped "showing off". I think I was a jackass early on and would not shut up about it. It's not that any portion of the passion was lost....I just didn't like the way "showing off" made me feel. I can't explain it really. So I locked up the entire library, including all my film reference books and mags, into my walkin vault and you need to recieve high-ass clearence before strolling inside now. Prior, it got to a point that if my wife's friends were to come over...I had to rush and file away all the nunsploitation and hardcore nudie horror out of sight. It's something I had to do.:D

I hate when people ask because I feel like a jerk when I turn them down, but a lot of people don't respect other's property. I basically only trust my sister to borrow anything from me & if it's a movie I'd worry that her boyfriend would loan it to one of his friends.
I probably have less than 250 even though I got a dvd player back in '98 because I just don't have the money & when I do sometimes I use it to do or collect something else (plus I gave away, traded or sold a few). If you guys are able to collect every movie that you love that's great. Lately I'll ask myself am I going to want to watch this again in the near future before I buy a movie because I want more than I can afford or have room for.

Large DVD collections or any large collection of anything in general is usually for rich kid types who's parents do not have an idea about how to properly raise children with the right respect for money, or people who are so sad that they simply don't have a life at all.
so i guess saying, "to be honest" allows one to say something stupid.
who the bleep are you to say someone who has more dvds then you is "so sad that they simply don't have a life at all".

I know I have well over 800, I just don't know how much over that mark I am. I expect to probably hit the 1,000 mark eventually. I've been buying since June of '99. I really don't consider it a waste of money if you enjoy having a movie library. I don't think anyone can be expected to watch all of the films multiple times, but it's great to know that you have a huge selection when you're in the mood to watch a movie. I mean, so what if you only watch a certain title one time. It's there if you ever want to see it again. I do that all the time; I'll get thinking of a film I haven't seen in a few years and get the urge to see it again. It's nice when it's already part of my collection. So even though it's an addiction, it's much better than wasting money going out drinking or whatever (in my opinion anyway).
Worse than my DVD buying has been my constant theater upgrades. I started out with a 35" TV. Then I upgraded to a 50" RPTV. Then I sold that one and upgraded to a 65" TV. Then I added a projector with a 104" pulldown screen. Then I moved that projector to the bedroom and set up a dedicated room with a 120" mounted screen. What comes next, I don't know...

I've been collecting since April of 2000 and I just passed the 600 mark today according to DVD Profiler (I still have the free version so you'd only be able to see around 530 if you click on the link in my sig) with another 30 or so on the way thanks to the recent CH B1G1 sale. I get probably 90-95% of my titles through various sales, hardly ever pay full retail for anything. Our DVD library is our primary source of entertainment; we don't have any sort of subscription television service and the only TV we watch is OTA network stuff. I don't make a habit of loaning them out, but on occasion let a co-worker borrow what she wants when she takes care of our cats while we're out of town.

Wow, do I feel insecure. I've only got around 400 or so (counting box sets as one). Though I do still have about 150 laserdiscs that I haven't upgraded yet.
However, I do have around 7000 CDs, so I'm not a total loser. As you might guess, I'm more of a music fan than I am a film fan.

I haven't counted recently, but based on how many I know each rack I have holds - I'd say somewhere in the neighborhood of 400.
Still quite a ways to go before catching up with my CD collection (over 4000), but I've worked on that for almost 20 years now, and DVD for only 7. Give me another few years, and maybe I'll hit the 1000 mark.

Frankly I believe this is the absolute worst reason to purchase dvd's. Then again, to each their own. I don't think I have ever seen 1000 movies, let alone wanting to own that many.
I buy what I like to watch repeatedly. I have been buying since DVD came out and I don't think I have 300 yet.
The only case in which I'd have to say I feel proud of my collection is when I realize what a growing library of film and TV history to select from. The visual aspect is certainly a cool one, but I like the idea that I'm piecing together films from all over the world, by great directors.
In regards to the guy who's brought on the scorn of others here, it's funny that we still get folks coming to a board designed for DVD lovers/collectors/aficionados and criticize those who have what is in their mind, too many DVDs.

My collection is nearing 400. After compiling an extensive VHS and laserdisc collection, only to seem them turn into 8 track tape practically overnight, I focused on compiling a core collection of my favorite films and directors on DVD, instead of the more eclectic mix that defined my previous collections. It's nice to know that the films and artists I can't live without are within arm's reach, and you can't really put a price on that. I'll probably upgrade where necessary with the latest format, hopefully a little wiser and more thrifty on the next go round...

I have 1,205(Tho I'm try to get rid of 115 of them) dvds.I've been collecting since October,2001.
Yes 4 years and 3 1/2 months of collecting and that is my number. There are reasons...
Game Stores(Like EB,Gamestop,etc.)
Pawn Shops
Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery
Family/Friends
Selling off VHS tapes
ebay & Amazon
So thats how I can have so many. Tho I have had to cut back on new releases, and am waiting for them to come used at Movie Gallery Buy 2,Get 2(unless I can't like SEs,2-Discs[when a 1-disc and 2-disc comes same time]TV Shows and others)

We've got about 1000 or so. Of course, I always tell my wife she's crazy for having so many DVDs (I estimated between 600-700 for her shelf).
This counts TV on DVD, and a lot of anime series, though. I'd say about 30% of our DVDs are anime.

I have exactly 725. I actually just put in my latest purchase (Flightplan) into DVD Proflier a little while ago.
For the longest time, I didn't really think I had that many DVDs but when I passed the 700 mark around Christmas I realized that I probably have one or two too many. I've got quite a lot of DVDs I have that I've never watched, and it's a problem when I like to rewatch various movies I've seen before (tomorrow is DEFINITELY Groundhog's Day night).

I just over 1400 titles, 300 of them are TV sets.
I basically started collecting in March of '97 once I saw the initial Sony titles, but with new formats around the corner, my pruchasing has really slowed down.
Last year I bought about 1/3 less than normal, although for non-"nutjobs" I still bought a lot. :p
This year I'm cutting way back and standard DVD will be pretty much be limited to TV sets. Most major theatricals are being put on the back burner until Blu-Ray arrives.
As for claiming that I won't replace my collection with High-Definition versions... I wont even go there...

This is EXACTLY why my collection is so big (that and killer deals).
I would much rather have the movie at my disposal than getting in the mood to watch something, only to run to Blockbuster and find out they don't have it; Or waiting days for Netflix to ship it out to you.
I get probably 90-95% of my titles through various sales, hardly ever pay full retail for anything. Our DVD library is our primary source of entertainment; we don't have any sort of subscription television service...
I too almost never pay retail (thanks to Columbia House and online shops with coupons), although I recently splurged for ER season 4 at Target just to get the bonus "Ambush" disc.
And DVD is my only source of entertainment. I haven't had cable in over 10 years. I'd much rather plunk down $30-40 blindly for a TV set that I've heard word of mouth on than have to pay $70 a month for cable service with commercials.

I am pushing 400 but I have slowed my purchases because of less disposable income and due to my wife only working part time due to having a baby. Between working 50 hours a week and watching my son, time is at a premium. I have been buying more tv on dvd and less movies. It's easier to find 45 minutes to watch something than 2-3 hours, and with less to spend, with the recent bargains on tv sets, they are a better bang for the buck. As far as collection size goes, I would pretty much have everything I wanted if I doubled the size of my current collection, but I can see someday hitting 1000. Having time to watch everything is another story.

As someone with 10-12,000 comic books, I can totally understand how a dvd collector can end up with an entire room full of discs.
:)
The only thing that bothers me is people who buy JUST to buy. If you're simply purchasing stuff to increase your total or fill your shelves, that's stupid. As long as you are buying things you enjoy or working to collect specific titles/directors, I say go for it.

I can see that a lot of people didn't appreciate what i said about large dvd collections. Well to address that i would like to say that personally i don't care if anyone has a larger dvd collection than myself. If you do....then good on you. But personally i only buy movies that i know i will watch on numersous occassions. And anyone that thinks that i am criticizing because i am pissed at othe people having more DVDs than myself is seriously off the mark. Just by you making these kind of remarks shows your mentality. Pure childish "Mine is better than yours" crapolla. There are a lot of people here who post saying that they have a large collection of DVDs that they have bought and have not even gotten round to watching yet. Now anyone that tries and defend this as being anything other than idiotic consumerism is wasting their time. I work hard in my job to pay for my DVDs and i respect others that do the same, but at the same time i think that there are a lot of people out there that are wasting a huge amount of money on DVDs. And don't give me any of this "I spend money on DVDs and have a wife and family to look after" bull. If you have a family don't you think it would be better to spend more time with them and more money on them rather than a DVD collection?
Also with note to the following people:
candyrocket786 - Well if you have a wife, work a 40 hr week and go to college don't you think there are more important things to spend your money on? I guess not. Let me know when the divorce papers come through.
gutwrencher - Well i did "think" when i wrote my post. If you cannot take constructive criticism for your actions then i am sorry. I am merely trying to point out to people that whilst it is nice to have a good DVD collection there are only so many hours in the day and days in peoples lifes. Too many people seem to be getting their priorities wrong in that time.
hermes10 - Tell me the big secret about the meaning of life then if you are so privy to it? I know what i feel about life....that it is too short and that i don't intend to waste most of it in front of a screen watching movies. And you dare to call me a "sad sack".....hahahaha.....you not only need to find the meaning of life.....you need to get one too.
whotony - When i say "to be honest" it means that i am speaking about what i believe. And i will tell you who i am to make my post....i am just like you and everyone else. I am a member of this board who simply wishes to express the way that i feel. And my post wasn't "stupid" it was valid comment, so deal with it.
The only reason i am making this post is that people are tending to be rude towards my comments instead of reading it and respecting my opinion. I am not trying to offend anyone by my comments, i am just trying to show people that is it really a good idea to buy so many DVD's? If you are a millionaire then i can understand...but anyone that works for a living and pays bills in life knows that there is a point where it becomes a little bit rediculous.
I guess at the end of the day i am wasting my breath.....some people will never change.

Lastly, you are wrong, we don't have similar lives. I don't get on internet message boards for DVD fanatics and criticize others for collecting too many DVDs.

You have to understand that people at a site like this one aren't going to even begin to agree with you. If you're an atheist, you won't get very far in a fundamentalist forum, even if you're certain you're right.
That said, if this is a strong belief for you, then there are ways to make your voice heard. This forum just isn't such a venue, and you have to udnerstand that people have the right to waste away their lives if they want. You can go into law and try to pass legislation that will limit people's TV or DVD viewing, or you can go into social science or cultural policy and conduct studies that show deletrious effects that then may influence lawmakers. Or you can start your own Internet radio show or blog where you talk about these things. Etc.

my current count won't be growing much more than what it is this year since we just bought a new car. we figured having a new car is much better than buying another 500 DVDs this year and driving our old "heap". I also think I'm skipping out on the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray stuff this year too. next year I'll pick up my purchases again I'm sure.

gutwrencher - Well i did "think" when i wrote my post.
As far as your reply to me goes, try re-reading what I wrote a few times. Maybe you'll figure out that what I said is quite different from what you seem to think I said. I'm not going to waste my time responding to remarks generated by your sloppy reading skills, but I will respond if you manage to get it right.
In the meantime, how about some of us come over to your house and evaluate how you're living your life? We'll be glad to tell you everything we think you're doing wrong. It will be what we honestly believe --honestly. Then you can stop doing all the things we don't believe you should be doing, and improve your life. Oh, and if someone here called you stupid, you shouldn't be offended, because they weren't trying to offend you, they were just trying to show you how it would be a good idea for you to have different ideas, choose different words when your write, and change your life for the better.

600 man. 600!!!!
Now, if you started in with your wasting time garbage and only owned 100, then maybe(well, probably not) I'd stop and think about the validity of your comments. However, we all know that 1000 is the new 600, and in a few years, even you will have that many discs.
As for me, I'm a nutjob. I just crossed the mark (with a title count--probably many, many more discs since I have a lot of TV and multidisc sets), and I've been collecting since 1997. That's 9 years. I don't think I've necessarily wasted a ton of money, since I find very good deals for much of what I buy. Plus, I don't have cable, don't go out to the bar or partying. I don't smoke or do drugs, and am single with no kids or house payment. I work, but am also active in the community music scene, and I like my collection to share with my extended family and friends. For a while, I actually worked for a video store, which yielded even better buys on many of my purchases. I'm actually cutting down a bit, but I still have many sets yet to buy.

Alot of the posters in this thread don't have 1000, so it's as relevant as those posts.
Are people counting films or discs ? What about boxsets ? do you count each movie seperately ?
I have 220 according to DVD Profiler, probably a few more if I would count the movies in boxsets seperately.

I have about 800. There are about 30 I haven't seen yet -got them from the last sale.. plan to watch them over the next few months. the others I have seen at least once - and even rewatched a few of them. Actually, our life is very busy and I don't have a lot of time to watch films. that's why when we DO have time, we like to have a nice selection to pick from. When you only have a 2.5 hr window to watch a film, going to Blockbuster takes too much time - not to mention the fact that it not worth renting financially.
if renting did get to be $1.99 and I could keep the film for a week, then I might change my habits. But even then most of the films I buy I couldn't rent anyhow..
And despite the fact that high def is on the horizon, most of my films are before 1960, and I plan to pass them on to my children...Maybe by then they will be replaced by high def - but I that will be a long way off....and when I upgrade a film, I just give the older version to my daughter who appreciates it (and has more time than me to watch these discs!).
I bought Castle films in 8mm back in the 60's when I was young (doubt if anybody remember these - really dating myself). I spent $3 for a 3 minute B&W silent version of a film- and I was happy to get these! ah - have times have changed. Now I get upset if 3 minutes are cut from a filme! So needless to say I was an early DVD adopter. Bought Contact and 5th Element the week they first came out. So been collecting for - what - 9 years? about 100 discs a year I guess. average 2 a week - which is about right. I used to go to the movies 2x a week when I had the time...So instead of going out - spending a lot of time and money and forced to see movies based on certain time slots, I diverted that money to buying 2 movies a week - at a fraction of the cost, I might add.. Despite the investment, I feel confident I would have spent 3-5x more $ if I went to the theaters. Besides 80%+ of my collection would never play in a local theater.
Don't see anything wrong with this. saved time, money, and can enjoy and see the films I want to see when I want to see them (and have time)...

I've got just short of 300 titles so nowhere near as many as a lot of people in this thread. I would have had about double that but I sold all of my old collection a few years ago and went on holdiay for a month. I just buy the stuff I really want but still go for the ocassional blind buy. It's not a massive collection but I'm happy with it and it's always growing, I tend to go through directors and actors that I like and buy up the films they have been involved with.

I am currently at 3060 titles. My collection has grown exponentially due to DDD's 20% sales. I buy only what me or my wife likes to watch. I double-dip if I think the new release is superior to the one I own. If and when I upgrade to BluRay/HD-DVD, I will only upgrade those DVD's I believe will benefit from a High Definition transfer. I will buy SD DVD's(as long as they are being sold) if I do not believe a Hi-Def transfer is necessary. Currently I only have one HD TV, a Mitsubishi 55", but I have five regular TV's with DVD players elsewhere in my house(I probably won't upgrade those until prices come way down). Now if someone has a problem with my collection, I'm not going to be losing any sleep over it. I don't buy DVD's on credit, so they haven't put me in debt. My wife and I make a little more than $200K a year, and we have no kids, so we have a lot of "disposable income". Currently my only problem with the DVD's is storage. It is amazing just how much room they take up. I am eyeing our guest bedroom, but my wife is putting up a pretty good fight to keep that one, since I took over the other guest room years ago, and it has around 35,000 comics and magazines stored in that room. What can I say, I am a collector!

I have 1300 DVD's, about 100 VCD's, and I still consider about 600 vhs tapes to be "active" as it were. The tapes are mostly due to large numbers of foreign and silent titles I have been slow to convert(due to cost mostly) and the complete Doctor Who collection(the BBC are releasing those at a snails pace, their DVD releases of DW will not be complete until 2013 or thereabouts at the present rate).

I'm getting close to 1000... I have 800 or so. A lot of my friends do think I'm nuts, but what can I say? I'm just a big fan of movies in general. I like having a big collection of movies and giving people a lot of options to choose from when they visit me and want to watch a movie. I've had a dvd player since like 1998 so it wasn't too difficult to accumulate that many over that span of time.

Buy knowing how many I buy monthly. I used to keep tabs (4 years straight) of everything I brought/sold/traded. Now I just look at my shelves and guess the amount from time to time. I stopped doing an inventory 2 years ago but have increased my Hollywood 4 for 20, MovieStop used DVD purchases and TV show seasons.

Yeah, I stopped adding to my dvdaf list about a year ago or more. Although I still maintain and add to my library.....having to add to that list every fucking day was getting old. When my paddling/kayak hobby started....I had even LESS time to keep track and hang out at this forum.
Then I got tired of all the assholes who had to start the same threads all the time...why have so many dvds.....whats the point.....your selections are questionable....all that shit.
Now I figure it's nobodys biz nor do I care. Instead....I say I have around 2,000....or around 3,000....or around...whatever. It's not that I don't care to share with people. As long as I know what I have....thats all that is essential. There are about 6 longtime dvdtalk vets here who exchange emails wih me on a regular basis....just to keep in touch. That and a "check-in" here at the forums every week is enough.
Now I sit at over 3,000 titles. Do you REALLY want/need to know what I just bought today? No? Didn't think so.

I'm well over 3,000 titles. The scary thing is that I can't think of many days where I have not purchased a DVD. Now, my DVD buying is limited mostly to $10 and below purchases at buyback, Hollywood Movies, etc. etc. but sometimes I wonder when it will stop.
I do love my collection and I use it almost every day and I love my library. I recognize that it is a personal thing that I like and I too feel no need to justify it or show it off to anyone but myself. I like it, I earned it, I want it and I enjoy it. So with that, I'm satisfied.

My collection is currently at 784.
I only have about 20 or so that I haven't watched yet. In fact, the last 2 DVDs I bought ("New York, New York" and "The Last Waltz") fall into this catagory.
My collection is mainly filled with many movies that I've grown up watching, so as a result, a lot of my collection is filled with films made in the last 30 years, but there are some great old ones in there, including "Sunrise", "Fantasia", "Sunset Boulevard", and "Ben-Hur" among others.
I've been collecting since July 2000, about four months before I finally bought my player. This was because I found the original long-OOP SE of "Little Shop of Horrors" at a Suncoast. I was almost 15 at the time, and I had to beg my mother like a child for me to have it. It was the best fight I ever fought and won.
People are shocked when I tell them how many DVDs I have, even when I tell them that I'm a movie freak. They don't understand that I'm absolutely serious about what I say. When I let people borrow stuff, they have to promise me that they won't screw with them. They do, then I guarantee they never touch my stuff again. My sister is the only person in my family I let borrow my stuff, only because she knows I care to have my collection in good shape.
I do have some bad movies, but the one thing to understand with me is that I like almost anything. Out of the 784 DVDs I own, only 51 of them are TV releases.
That's about it. I know I don't have as many as some of you, but to explain the big influx of DVDs, I worked at Media Play and the employee discount helped me get about 350-400 DVDs on basically discounted product.

If you have 3000 DVDs, with an average amount of 2.5 hours of content on each disc, you would have approximately 7500 hours of content. Assuming you just sat on your ass and watched movies for 16 hours a day, it would take about a year and four months to watch your entire collection. And if you only watched DVDs for just 4 hours a day (a quarter of your non-sleeping day) it would take well over 5 years to complete.

Count me as a recent member of the 1000-DVD club. I bought about 3/4 of the DVDs in the past two years. I blame DVD Talk's bargains forum. However, I suspect that plenty of the bargains are the result of timing- price drops and anticipation of high def. discs.

The point in having a large library of films isn't to watch and rewatch everything you have, but more of a matter of convenience, and a collection of things you're a fan of. There are many movies I own that I know full well I will never watch again in their entirety. But there are scenes and sections of those movies I know I'll want to see over and over - and that's the point of having a library.

Agreed.
Hell I buy alot of TV ON DVD sets, which some i might rewatch but by me buying DVD's every week i really have no time too. It's great to have them on the shelfs because one day if you have kids or something you could show them shows that i grew up on.
Hell there are only a select # of movies that i have watched more than once but I am proud to have the movies on my shelf and its a nice feeling to know that you own your favorite TV show/Movie.
