Question RE the extras on Buffy/Angel dvds...

My wife and I are starting to embark on the Buffy/Angel journey and I was curious if the extras on the dvds give away future spoilers. I am watching these thru Netflix and would hate to have to go back thru all the discs to watch the extras again but I definitely do not want to spoil anything.

Any of you out there watched all the extras? Are the commentaries & interviews worth a listen and are the spolier free? Any specific extras I should watch out for?

FWIW, I started with the movie (just to be complete) and have watched the first 2 episodes of season 1 of Buffy so far. I am completely mystified that this show was even given a second life from such an awful movie. I am definitely intrigued since I have read the high praise of both shows and find it amazing that Buffy not only went on for 7 seasons but had a spin-off that ran for 5.

Firefly's quality of writing/dialogue is the initial reason I am checking this out otherwise I would have went thru life Buffy-free.

I haven't watched all of the extras, but I believe that they are not spoiler free.

The extras are the most spoilerific extras in the history of DVD extras. Stay the hell away from them until you've watched the whole series through once.

By the way, sometimes, the menus are spoilery, too, but there's not much you can do about that. Moreover, Season 1 of Buffy plays an audio clip when you start the episode, and some of those audio clips are spoilery!

Also, once you get to where the spinoff series starts, you'll want to be sure to check out a viewing order list, as the two shows tend to intertwine plotlines at a few points, and watching them out of order can sometimes result in some pretty hefty spoilers.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will stay extras free on my journey then.

And thanks for mentioning the order list. I did a search and found a thread which listed the order to watch them in. I hope it is worth all the time. At what point should you give up if the series just isn't hitting you?

The middle seasons are the best, and I could see a definite jump in quality from the Season 1 finale onwards. A lot of season 1 is fairly dreadful, but if you can get past it the rest of the series is pretty marvelous.

also the season 1 menus (and season 3) are confusing as in what order do you watch them in. if you have the chosen collection, just look on the back of the season pack for the order.
Also, you might want to mute the audio on season 1, especially on the episode "Angel" on disc 2. Oh, and the show doesn't really become exceptional tv until season 2. But season 1 is important, since it sets everything up.

You should know whether or not you are interested in the show or not by the end of season 2. The first half of season 2 is still very mediocre and a lot like season 1. The second half of season 2 is my favorite part of the entire show's run.

The episode list that MasterofDVD posted above is one that I initially made for some friends of mine a few years back who were just starting the show on dvd (glad to see it's still being passed around these boards). I made that first version largely based on the original order in which all of the episodes aired on tv. If however you'd rather watch the episodes in an order that cuts down on the number of times you need to swap discs between the two shows, I have a different version of the list I made for that purpose. All of the points of commonality between the two shows are kept intact, yet areas where nothing links between the two shows for gaps at a time are are arranged in away that minimal disc swapping is necessary.

So basically, if you want to avoid one show spoiling the other, and want to catch all the references and crossovers between the shows, anything in red, blue, or bold text needs to definitely be watched in the order they appear on this list. Anything in normal text you can vary the viewing order.

key:
red = official "crossover event" as promoted by The WB
blue = major connection between the shows
bold = minor connection between the shows

I completely agree with this & would add that if the early shows are not hitting you at all you should skip ahead to the second half of season two and give that a try before giving up. I'm a big fan of the show now, but I didn't get into it for a few years because I caught part of a lame season 1 ep that turned me off the show for a while. There are actually quite a few Buffy fans that almost didn't get past the early eps, although many people loved the show from the start.

I think I'm always the dissenting voice on this, but IMO it's absolutely not necessary to have an elaborate viewing order that entertwines BtVS and Angel. I know that's how the show was originally watched on TV, but I think they work better as seperate entities. The crossover episodes were few and far between.

As a general rule, watch BtVS first. The only exception to this would be the season four finale of Angel, which should be watched before the series finale of BtVS.

I agree. If one doesnt like it by the end of Season 2 I would stop because the last half of Season 2 is not only intense and well written but there are some big surprises.

I actually liked season 3 best, I think. But the second half of season 2 rocks.

Season 3 is probably the most evenly high-qualitied season as a whole.......but personally my favorites are still season 2 and the much maligned season 6. I would say season 3 is probably my third favorite season, although from a writing stand point, it is probably the best developed and executed season.

You know, this thread could pick up where Sessa 17's thread left off, or faded away....

I agree to a certain extend. I think it'd probably be easiest to just watch them straight through, but make sure to keep any crossovers in order, especially during the first season of Angel. There really isn't any need to alternate on the majority of the episodes.

I wouldn't mind that.

is anyone else amazed
Spoiler:
at how well faith fit into the group even after her first episode. It felt really natural and not like joss saying "well, we need 2 slayers and thats that." (also with eliza being so f'ing hot as well isn't bad either.)

Since the guy hasn't seen the series yet this is kind of a spoiler for him...

Just wanted to thank you guys for your posts, especially Master of DVD & Garmonbozia for the schedules. I think I am going to try Garmonbozia's schedule to try to cut down on the disc swapping some.

I just finished episode 7 of the first season and am really starting to like the show a little more after each episode. "Angel" (#7) has definitely been the strongest episode yet. I definitely think the humor is getting better as well. I am taking my time going thru them (I have to since my wife wants to watch and we have a toddler) but will hopefully be thru both series completely over the next couple of months.

Exactly. It's just unnecessarily creating extra work for yourself. And, especially with the later seasons of Angel, I think it does a disservice to the dramatic pacing of the episodes.

it'll probably take you longer then a few months (especially with a kid.

got a season 3 question regarding an episode
Spoiler:
is the character "Anya" that helps Cordillia create a world where Buffy wasn't in her life... the same "Anya" that eventually becomes a reuglar? (and I can see why certain people have the hots for Willow in that episode)

I finished watching AtS S4 a while ago, and I'm about to start BtVS S7, followed by AtS S5. I originally rented AtS S3 over the course of a few months because I didn't have the money for the full set, but I eventually bought it and it's still wrapped in plastic.
