I was just waffling on whether I should pick this up at Best Buy this week for $7.99. This thread just made me decide to go for it. Thanks!

ya, most of those albums best buy has for 799 are worth the pickup...panic! and academy is are on tour together...

Cat Power is like a fierce version of fiona apple...

id also recommend the New Pornographers, Arcade Fire, and Hawthorne Heights cds...

also...even though its not in this section, if u like cat power u may enjoy the newest amie mann album as well...

Download Antony and the johnsons first before buying...really different sound, and i believe the guys a tranny>? he sound slike one anyway, but his music works pretty well!

I think The Greatest is very good but not nearly as good as You Are Free. I'll pick it up for sure and maybe after a couple listens I'll change my mind.

I think The Greatest and You Are Free are very good, but not as good as Moon Pix!

In other words, a note to Cat Power noobs: go out and get You Are Free and Moon Pix if you dig The Greatest!

Agreed. Granted I'm only halfway through listening to The Greatest for the first time (and I'm loving it), but Moon Pix is magical and its like will most likely never be seen again.

(Now that I've hyped it all up, all the Cat Power newbies can pick it up and say "What is this droning repetitive garbage and why do those idiots online like it so much." )

I worked at a record store and someone started to play one of her albums and I swear I wanted to stab a pen in my eye - her singing got really grating real fast.

oh well, whatever, to each his own.

Saw these at Best Buy today (didn't pick it up, although I may later this week).

I enjoyed the sticker advertising the hidden bonus track.

Oh, the irony.

Is it true that her new album is a little fuller sounding? Like more instruments? I can only take her in small doses, but I've heard the new one is different.

You Are Free is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I liked Moon Pix so i plan on checking this new one out.

Oh! And I love her cover of "Hanging on the Telephone" on that Cingular commercial. I don't think its available anywhere though.

My Best Buy was sold out too. They put the CD in the weekly ad, you'd think they'd stock enough to last more than half a day. In fact, I wasn't aware that anyone in my town had even heard of Cat Power besides me, let alone would rush out to Best Buy to buy it up before I could get there.

I wound up going to Borders and paying $12.99 for it instead- it was worth it to me to spend the extra money to have it in my hands today. BTW, since I'm on a Best Buy sucks kick, they also didn't have His Name is Alive - Detrola, Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat or Tortoise & Bonnie Prince Billy - The Brave and the Bold all of which I was looking for today. Borders on the other hand, had them all in stock and amazingly (for Borders) none of them were over $13.99. It was a very happy (and rare) big release day for me.

The BB that I went to yesterday had tons of copies of The Greatest out on the shelves, in an endcap with all of the other advertised $7.99 CDs...I guess they are just smart enough to prep for the NYC hipster crowd. Surprisingly, they also had the Tortoise & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album (3 copies!) for $12.99. I also stumbled upon 2 import copies of the new Cardigans album for $14.99 (no bonus DVD, though). Always a surprise at the BB!

Cat Power noob here. I saw/heard this album mentioned in a couple of reviews for the Jenny Lewis disc (which should be delivered to me by Amazon tomorrow), so I did some digging and found an mp3 of The Greatest's title track...

http://www.matadorrecords.com/mpeg/c...20Greatest.mp3 (right click-save as; it's legit, mods - put out on her label's site)

...and I liked it a lot! So, I figured $8 isn't too much to plop down. I'll give the album a full listen tomorrow. That's one good thing about having a brain dead job - I can devote rapt attention to my iPod.

I'm just glad the song got its own track and isn't tacked onto the end of another song's track (or given it's own track, but starts out silent). That annoys me a lot because I have to do some edits before I load it into iTunes. BTW, speaking of loading this into iTunes, does this bonus track have an official title?

I think I might pick this up. After listening to samples of the tracks & the mp3 track given above (thanks!) I will probably give this a go for 8 bucks.

Sound kinda like a rawer version of The Cocteau Twins (who I love).

Any other of the $7.99 cds worth picking up with this one?

In addition to The Arcade Fire and The New Pornographers, there's also Broken Social Scene, Calla, The Magic Numbers, and Antony & the Johnsons.

Kinda weird...I wouldn't really expect to find more than one great CD on sale in a given week at Best Buy, let alone at least six!

I picked up You Are Free based on word of mouth and wasn't disappointed. Then I picked up Moon Pix and What Will the Community Think, and initially I was disappointed, but I didn't have too much time to listen as I came across The Greatest soon after.

I am enjoying it immensely, particularly the music behind her vocals. I find it quite different than You Are Free. The instrumentation on The Greatest has so many details in it that I haven't grown tired of listening. It's not cheery, but it's denser, like that little "Moon River" melody that pops up on the title track. It's not the focus, but a charming little detail.

I picked this up today. Listened to it only once but i am really digging it.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I went thru and sampled all the cds that BB had for sale for $7.99 and ended up picking up The New Pornographers: Twin Cinema and Plain White T's: All That We Needed.

Most new music I have bought at once in quite a while.

If they keep up the 8 bucks or less price point I will definitely pick up more in the future.

Like it. I'm already sucked in by the larger production. It's not light years ahead in that department, but enough to hold my interest. Good for Chan.
