I just find the title completely ludicrious. "Brokeback Mountain" sounds pretty damn close to what the all out porn title might be...like maybe "Broken Back Mounting." I guess the cowboys broke their backs while mounting each other.
I am waiting for the sequel, "Sore Ass Valley."

Odd, the one more common is "Bareback Mountain" Well, the basic idea is there. It's about Gay cowboys. Simple as that.

I haven't seen the movie, so my opinion is based only on the trailers and clips I have seen here and there. To me, it looks horribly cliched to the point of comedy. I have a theory that many peope don't want to admit how stupid much of it sounds, dialogue and all, for fear of being labeled anti-gay, and whatever else. The line "I wish I knew how to quit you!" cracks me up every time I hear it. Not only because of just the line itself, the words, but the delivery of it just sounds like something out of SNL, or some other comedy flick or show.
I'd think the same thing if it was in a film about a straight couple. To me, it's just flat out funny.
That line is every bit as horrible as "I'm the king of the world!, etc... if you ask me.

There was "puddin'" in the movie, it was just implied, like the gay theme should have been. Wouldn't it have been a much more enjoyable movie to watch if it was only implied throughout the movie, then people all across the country could argue and debate if it was a buddy movie or a gay love story.

It's front runner for the Best Picture oscar, and is about two gay cowboys. That makes it fodder for numerous things, from speculation of propoganda, to making gay jokes appropriate.
Most of the jokes consist of the typical gay-joke cheap shot "Narnia in first, Kong in second, and Brokeback Mountain takes it up the rear at number 10." But I'm easily amused by them :D

How can you possibly criticize a movie that you've never seen? Your criticism of the film is to be perceived only as speculation from viewing movie trailers, and teasers. This does not officially govern as viewing the movie in it's entirely. Of coarse, hearing partial a diologue from a film, will appear insensible. There are various subplots that are portrayed in the movie as well, other than the controversal gay theme.
That line is every bit as horrible as "I'm the king of the world!, etc... if you ask me.

Gay jokes usually take one of two forms: the buttfuck joke and the sissy joke. Neither one is particularly funny in itself, and both are really insulting to gays out of context. I shouldn't have to explain that 1) gays didn't invent anal--there's as much of it, if not more, going on in the straight world and 2) equating all gays with femininity and drag queens is not only inaccurate, but it's a weapon that has been used against all of us for too long.
These jokes are as bad--if not worse--than "watermelon and fried chicken" jokes. They're simply a listing of stereotypes, and an invitation to ridicule.
In the right context they might be OK, gays certainly tell them themselves, but they better be damn funny. You don't just go on TV and tell a watermelon ****** joke. You'd better fucking well know who you're talking to, and what you're trying to say.
Unfortunately, some people don't do context well. Take Leno, for example. Here's a guy who supposedly loves and respects the movie, and yet has taken every cheap shot imaginable toward it, and is still using it as his favorite target. He doesn't even notice that what he's doing is ridicule--he probably thinks it's affectionate.
He doesn't have a clue that his jokes are damaging to gays--that they are exactly the kind of jokes that have always been used to keep us queers "in our place" and to shame straight men from showing any emotions...
He invites bigots to ridicule us, and then tells us to "lighten up."
Now look at John Stewart. Same buttfuck jokes? Same sissy jokes? Pretty close. But he knows how to do context. He knows how to make fun of not only gays, but people who get the "icks" about gays. He can make a bunch of frat boys laugh at a queer joke--and sympathize with the queer at the same time. It's a great tightrope act he does, and I look forward to seeing him try it at the Oscars.

The only "joke" that I can think of, is the line "wish I knew how to quit you". Like others have said, alot of people are repeating it jokingly. Kinda like "You had me at hello" or "Im the king of the world". Its just a cheesy line.
If people are making derrogatory jokes about the movie due to the subject, then that is just a shame. I did not particularly like the movie, but it IS a serious subject and should at least be respected.

The screenplay is just horrible. Everything else makes up for that, though. The screenplay is certainly odd for a Hollywood film--but horrible? It's a shoe-in for Best Adapted Screenplay, and you probably already know that it had a reputation as the best "unproduceable" script in Hollywood for years before anyone got the courage to make it.
McMurtry & Ossanna took a short story they felt was "important" and "genius"--and wrote a script that was 100% faithful to it. It might have been better if they were less reverential, given themselves more freedom to find its own movie path, as Jackson did with LOTR. At the same time, their fidelity, coupled with Ang's formalism and restraint, are what make this a film with richer subtext than nearly any American film one can mention. It's very foreign-film-esque in pacing and the amount it requires of an audience. I'm just thrilled to see an art film, particularly a challenging one, make it big for a change.

For the record and off the subject, why does anyone take the Golden Globes seriously? It's less than ninety guys (several are in their 80s and 90s) with minimal credentials who are easily bribed with parties and gifts. All but about two dozen are part-time journalists and the only credential is that they must publish at least 4 articles a year in minor foreign publications.
Pia Zadora won one. How serious could they be?

It's fun to predict awards, but as many know (as should you) the awards a film receives means ABSOLUTELY nothing in reality (meaning outside Hollywood). I don't let a group of movie related people tell me what is supposed to be good and what is not.
I don't recall anyone saying last year that Million Dollar Baby was caught in a hype machine but that was a year ago so....
...and just like M$B, BBM's win for best picture (that's to say that it will win-which I am sure it will because of, yes, the hype given to it by Hollywood) will be forgotten by the non-film buffs in the world within a couple of months after the ceremony. This relates to the fact that awards mean nothing in reality.
I don't want this to dilute the fact that BBM is a <i>good</i> film, but your entire argument as to my not liking the screenplay is based on this: it must be a great screenplay because it has won awards that are given by a select group of people. Which isn't that great of an argument.
adamblast's argument, OTOH, was a good argument.

But, I really dont know what (if any) their political agenda is.It's in the greyzone between libertarian and conservative, and as with Jon Stewart I should be saying their political "bias" rather than "agenda," since they don't consciously push it too hard. But you *can* count on them to ultimately side against gay rights, abortion or any minority politics in their plotlines and gags.
I remember how livid I was in the Boy Scouts vs. gays episode. They had one of their "afterschool special" pseudo-preachy riffs about how it was the gays who were being intolerant by forcing themselves on the Boy Scouts. That was the happy ending: the gays backing down and saying they were wrong, and they meant it. Remember also that South Park had a big hand in re-popularizing gay as an insulting adjective for anything lame or stupid. A big part. And they knew what they were doing.
I still think they're funny, so this must be what conservatives think of Jon Stewart.

Do you mean the "homosexualizing" of America? ;)
Yes...the National sprinkling of fairy dust, if you will. And i think you will. ;)

Along the same lines, I wonder how many teenage girls went to see Brokeback because of the two "hot guys." Talk about an uncomfortable car ride for the phobic parents. :)
I put hot guys in quotations since I sure as hell don't agree with that assessment ;)

Yeah, my girlfriend really doesnt care for either of them. I think Jake G is attractive though. This definately is not 2005's Titanic though.

It might be the opposite of Titanic, actually. Jake and Heath are both straight whereas Leo.... ;)
Don't really care for him either. Too twinkie. And blonde. Yuk.

Man, I don't go for all that fab five shit. If a gal wants to hang out with me, she better like to sling back some beers, watch horror movies, and go DVD/CD bargain hunting. :)
I usually have to ask a female friend to go shopping when I am looking for new clothes. Beyond jeans/tee shirts/doc martins, I am clueless. :)

Heath doesn't do anything for me but Jake - if he were gay and like his character I could picture him being a voracious bottom. ;)

My point was very pointed actually. Yes, being gay is becoming more mainstream, but sadly for most people in america, the fem stereotype still exists.

Yep. While there are plenty of fem guys, there are also plenty who are not. I DO NOT want to be "best girlfriends" with a woman. Sure I have female friends but my relationships with them are not of the "fab five" type.

Well..all 5 of them are from NYC and here, a lot of that shit is everywhere. It's really hard to find a nice, romantic cutebut-not-shi-shi guy to watch a lotta movies with. It's like people feel the need to fit a stereotype in order to fit in. Whattaya gonna do?

No no, babe. I see tons of you 30-something guys dressing like twinks here in Chelsea. ;)

I actually really like the show for what it is. It's helped me a bit because for the most part, i'm just like you. Take me to The Gap and I'm cool. Nothing special. As long as I'm comfy, that's all that matters.

I hear those Christian conversion places are looking for guys like you. Give it a try. Supposedly, you can change. :p

1) don't joke. I just had a friend come out to me that I've known for 7 years who has had such a hard time dealing with it that he's been a member of those groups for years. He also admitted himself into the ER because he was going to kill himself over it. Christianity is ridiculously fucked up. He's considering not being bi or gay or whatever he is for his religion...because they told him if he's gay, he won't be allowed back to his parish.
2) You consider yourself a twink at 30 and shop at A&F? And you voted for Bush? You got more issues than Playboy.

You know, at one point someone said something about a movie in this thread. Given that it's been so long that I barely remember it, I think this thread has run its course. :)
