Why can't I get my Receiver to output 5.1 surround sound???

Hi again everyone.

Got a question concerning Dolby 3/2 vs. Dolby 5.1.

I just purchased an optical cable to connect my Sony receiver to my JVC DVD player. I connected the cable and when playing Star Wars or a Superbit in 5.1, the read-out on the receiver's display reads Dolby 3/2.

My question is...

Is Dolby 3/2 another way of saying 5.1????

OR

Am I doing something wrong????

I get obsessed with things working right. Even though the Dolby 3/2 sounds great, if its supposed to play in 5.1, and I'm not getting 5.1...I get irked.

Thanks for any help.

Mike

Dolby 3/2 is Dolby 5.1 generally. On my Sony there is a separate indicator for the sub .1 channel, so Dolby 3/2 is 3 channels across the front and 2 across the back.

Yup. My Sony receiver reads the same way. With DTS ES it shows up as 3/3.
