I have built a fairly high end HT system. I currently have a Sony V444ES Reciever, and have a full Klipsch Reference Series 3 setup (RF-3, RC-3, RS-3, KSW-12). And now I am currently in the market for a new DVD player? It will be connected using an optical connection.
So here's my question...does the kind of DVD player I buy have any effect on the sound quality of the DD and DTS signal I hear while waching DVD's?
A salesman told me that the reciever's DAC's handle all of the decoding of the DD and DTS signals. And that the DVD player just send's these signals. So basically a 50.00 player and a 500.00 player will sound the same. Is this true?

Was the guy trying to sell you a $50.00 player over a $500.00 one?

Since the signal output by the player is digital, it would be the same across the board. The main purpose for spending money on a better player is video quaility. Look for a player with features you want then go from there.

LOL! Thanks for the responses.
No, I was actually ready to buy a 500.00 Sony player...and we're talking about some details. So he actually blew the sale, but I appreciated his honesty...if he was right.
So right now I'm not intersted in SACD or DVD-A....and I am only displaying a on 4x3 Sony WEGA. Until I upgrade to a DLP projection TV (hopefully soon)...it looks like stickign with a low-end Sony will sound the same in DD or DTS as a high-end one?

Well in theory a signal sent to be decoded by the DAC's in the receiver should always be the same. Having said that, if you have a nice system already you should look for a good quality player to compliment it.
