I was putting the Seven Samurai back on my DVD rack today and noticed that Se7en is missing. I don't know where it is, who took it, or how long it's been gone.

Now I'm pretty mad.

I was going to watch The Exorcist a few days ago, only to discover that it was not on my shelf. It's absence is troubling.

My copy of "Moulin Rouge!". Vanished into thin air. Searched hi and lo, never found it. So I bought another copy. Then a year later I found it at the bottom of the bag of clothes I don't wear that are destined for Good Will. How it got there, I have no idea.

There's not a jury in the world that would convict you for beating the person who stole your Se7en DVD to death with your bare hands.

I bought a used copy of Criterion's The Vanishing with the intention of selling. When I brought it home, the one I already owned was missing. I thought maybe someone stole mine and sold it to the resale shop but no one I know really had access to my collection, and if it was a burglar, why would he have only taken that one disc. A mystery to this day.

I thought I owned A Bridge too far, but when I went to get it off the shelf one day it wasnt there.

Maybe i just dreamed I owned it. The bright side was I went out and bought the new SE version instead :)

I've had a handful of DVD's go missing since starting college and bringing some of them to school. Most were borrowed and never returned. However, I can't find my copy of Frequancy for the life of me. I know I never brought it to school and I didn't let anyone borrow it. I'm starting to convince myself that I sold it, but can't remember when.

Freaky Friday was missing for about 8 months or so until my wife finally found it. It was behind a row of our DVD's in the bookcase but it had gotten turned around and faced out but covered by all the DVD's that were in the right place spine facing out.

I'm missing one disc from Knight Rider: Season One. It may have gone back to Walmart or Netflix, but then I'd have one of theirs. I sold a DVD player on craigslist, but I know I checked the tray before I unplugged it. To this day I have no idea where it is, and I checked everywhere. That was before my last move, so I have no idea where it is.

I keep telling myself I'll auction the rest of the set on eBay with tiny letters saying "disc 3".

Somehow, my "Die Another Day" has gotten away from me! I viewed it one time and then found that there wasn't enough room on the shelf to put it with the rest of the "Bonds". So I put it in the closet until I had time to free up some space for it. After I finally re-shuffled the titles on the shelf, I couldn't locate the DVD. That was over two years ago, and I have *no idea* what happened to it! (You notice that I haven't rushed out to re-purchase it! :) For some reason, pulling down "Goldfinger" from the shelf assuages the loss ... )

I've had stuff like that happen (usually with CDs). It usually ends up that I had temporarily put the disk in the case of another to protect/transport it and forgot to remove it.

Perhaps many or all of you are getting old and started to forget where you left it.

Just recently I wanted to watch Carlito's Way and when I open the case the disc was gone! I tried looking for everywhere and couldn't find it.

I forgot that I place the dvd in The Blair Witch 2 movie case for some particular reason.

In the past, I did not keep track of who borrowed my dvds. After missing Lawrence of Arabia and Road to Perdition I began asking if anyone had it and of course NOBODY did. So I began writing down who borrowed what. Since then nothing has disappeared. Amazing!

I lost the first season of Hogan's Heroes for about half a year.

I noticed the 2nd season was going to be released soon so I went to glance at my 1st one on the shelf and it was gone. I looked for it forever.

From advice from my dad, I looked under my mattress -- not under my bed but under the mattress, between it and the boxspring. There it was. I have no clue how it got there, but I was ecstatic to find it.

It's only happened once with a CD. The puzzling thing is the CD case was on the shelf, but the CD inside was gone. I'm not one of those people who leave discs lying around because I fear they will get scratched easily so where it could have gone is baffling.

This usually happens when my son takes one of the shelf and doesn't return it. I have found DVD's in his toy box, closet, in hus underwear drawer. There were times when he did return them that he would put them in the wrong place. I would look for them and eventually find them on another shelf completely. Also, when my baby girl started walking, the DVD shelves were one of her favorite destinations. I once found my copy of Fallen half-stuffed in the top of her diaper genie with the lid closed. Eh, I didn't think the movie was that bad ;)

I recently bought locking DVD cabinets. This doesn't happen anymore.

Has anyone ever traded away a DVD, then had the desire to watch it, went to the place where it would be on the shelf and ... poof?

Happened with Bruce Almighty. Wanted to see the Steve Carrell scene ... you know, THE scene that made that movie. Went to the Bs, looked and ... no Bruce.

My sad answer to this question is that I don't have a clue. :( My shelves are all full and I've got huge piles of DVD's on my living room floor and in my home office. And I don't have anymore room to put more shelves... The only unused/free space I could use is underneath the stairway that goes up to my mezzanine. I need to have shelving units built that could slide in and out of that space. Until that happens and I have all my DVD's in order and inventoried, I won't know if any are missing.

It's happened t me twice, and both are a mystery. The first was, sadly, Deep Space Nine season 1 Disc 3. I remember watching it (perhaps in a different DVD player than normal, perhaps not). One day I looked and it was gone. Checked every DVD case I could find to no avail. Even checked CD cases.

The second one is even weirder because I never watched the movie. I got a Barbershop 1 & 2 pack for $9.99 at Wal-Mart, took the movies out of the slicover, looked at the discs. Then a month later (while looking one more time for the DS9), I find Barbershop is empty. I have no memory of taking the disc out.

I also misplaced Play It Again Sam for a long time, but that one I knew was in another case somewhere. I finally came across it in Foul Play one night.

Still haven't ended up watching anymore DS9 (I own all seven seasons) because I missed one episode on that disc. Stupid, I know.

for me it is Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. I always immediately put the DVD back in the case when I am done watching but when I checked the DVD is not in the case, but I am pretty sure I know who took it and he is not going near my house again so I just had to go pay 9.99 for a new one.

I've lost a handful of DVD's from letting someone borrow them, which is why I'm pretty stingy on loaning them out these days. Though my original copy of Sin City is nowhere to be found. Luckily I bought the new special edition, so I'm not too worried.
I do believe there is a dvd thief, kind of like Santa Claus. He sneaks in at night, travelling from state to state, and takes a dvd or two from our collections thinking we'll never notice. Someone should alert the Feds.

I must be one anal retentive bastard, because I've never lost a DVD, or a CD, or a cassette when I was collecting those 18 years ago. I've always maintained large collections of media with no problem. Right now it's just me and my fiance, and we don't loan anything. We're in our own house.

When I used to rent, we had onsite rental management and maintenance. They had keys to every door. That's when I bought locking cabinets for my DVD's. These guys come in to change a filter or something, there's no way they're not going to notice my collection.

I use my DVDProfiler to do an inventory every couple of months to make sure I don't have stuff listed that I don't have, as well as if I have stuff I haven't lited yet. I tend to sell movies then re-buy them later at a cheaper price, so I have to stay on top of things!

My brother just recently returned a few DVDs he borrowed from me over a year ago...I didn't realize he had them or that they were even missing (out of sight, out of mind I guess).

On the plus side, it was like I was getting Panic Room and Bound for the first time all over agian.

Usually I don't even realize DVDs are missing unless I notice an empty slot on my shelf, and even then I have to seriously think about which movie it was by trying to figure out its alphabetical placement using the dvds on either side of the empty slot as clues.

I can't find my expanded edition of Lord of the Rings Return of the King, and it's pissing me off. Last year (or so), I suspected that a DVD of mine had been stolen (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.php?p=5506419&postcount=1). Well, the one that I am noticing is gone is LOTR Return of the King. I hope to find it around someday, stuck in some corner, but I can't shake that what if feeling that somebody came in to my apartment for maitenance and saw all my DVDs and decided I wouldn't miss one of them.

Slightly OT, but my boss has a penchant for loaning out his CDs to pals all the time......and hey, more power to him but I've also seen him replace several of those in the last few years.

We have one friend I named "The Black Hole"...which I read that Ackroyd used to call Belushi. He'd give him a cigarette lighter and poof.....a minute later it was gone, nowhere to be found!

I'd say it sounds like some of you may have light-finger friends/relations.

I haven't had a single DVD disappear (knocks on wood). Since my DVDs go from case to player and back to the case, none are likely to either. The first time one does will be the last time. I won't waste any time putting locks on my cabinets, because I'll have a darn good idea why they disappeared and who the responsible party (or parties) may be.

A few years ago, I went out of town for the weekend. My wife had my in-laws over most of the weekend. When I came home, I went to put a movie in for the kids, and oddly enough, the first movie I grabbed for (some Disney title, can't remember which) was gone. I looked all over, couldn't find it, and tried to forget about it, figuring it was around somewhere. A couple days later, I looked all over the house, then did a complete inventory of our collection. Sure enough, the DVD was gone. As were a few books. I knew my father-in-law had taken them, but he wouldn't admit to it. My wife and my parents suggested that I just rebuy the DVD and missing books, but I refused. I didn't see any reason why I should have to shell out $50 because my father-in-law didn't want to admit he'd stolen from us. This dragged on for a couple months, and got to be a bit of a problem. I probably would have made just as big a deal had it only been one book , or just a DVD, but considering he stole a total of $50 worth of stuff, including a DVD we watched all the time, and a couple cookbooks we used quite frequently, I considered it to be a very big deal. If I'd have walked into a store and stolen the same items to replace the ones he'd taken, then told the store to ignore it because the stealing and lying was just in my nature, I suspect they would have been just as eager to prosecute me.

Anyways, after a couple months, my parents "found" an extra copy of the Disney DVD in the drawer where they kept their old VHS tapes (which hadn't been opened for months prior to when this whole incident began due to some remodeling they'd done). They didn't know which books had been taken, otherwise they'd have "found" those as well. As for the books, even though my wife found our books at her parents' house, her dad refused to let her take them, insisting that he'd bought them for himself, and had somehow replicated the notes I'd taken on some of the pages in my very own handwriting. She finally told him that we wouldn't be bringing the kids back over if this was the example he was going to be setting for them. While that should have been the end of it, his next step was to throw the books away to prove that he'd never had them. Eventually, though, he broke down and replaced them. The funny thing about all this is that my in-laws didn't even have a DVD player at the time.

I've had a couple others disappear, but those had all fallen behind our shelves and turned up eventually. I do a complete inventory at least once a year, and that usually gets everything back in its proper place.

I NEVER lend out any DVDs to friends or family. I'm not selfish by any means, just protective of my collection. If anyone wants to see a title I own, i'll gladly burn them a copy. This way I never have to worry about when i'm going to get my disc back and the recepient is happy too. It's a win-win.

I've never had this happen to dvds, but I have had it happen to 2 games: Legend of Zelda for NES and Duke Nukem 3D for PC. I lost my Zelda game sometime in the mid '90s and found it a few years later behind the baseboard heat in my basement when I was moving my tv stand. I dusted it off, poped it in my Nintendo, and it worked fine. Duke Nukem, however, is still MIA. I lost it in either '98 or '99 and have since come to the conclusion that it was stolen by this kid I used to hang out with when I was in 7th grade. I severed contact with him a year later due to him being an asshole.

My sister makes this happen to me all the time, well now she lives in Texas and me in Ohio,so it won't happen again.
Examples....
Just got the Simpsons season sets, and I wanted to watch Season 1 -nowhere to be found. I was like WTF? I knew my sister (and brother-in law) had borrowed dvds, but they said they wrote them all down. 3 1/2 months later, she returns dvds, which included everything on the list plus Simpsons, and my non-noticed missings titles Ocean's Eleven & Twelve. I also one time wanted to watch Sweet Home Alabama. Looked in the Ss,a missing spot where it goes, looked through the whole collection,no dice. My sister then says 8 months later that her favorite movie was Sweet Home Alabama(of all time,it was good, but WTF?) and I was like the funny thing is I can't find my copy. She laughs. "Because I had it" I paused feeling relieved, then for some reason that word "had" struck me. I said "had?" she said yeah,it broke and she had to throw it away, because she watched it so many times, she said she would "buy me another one". 12 months later, still no replacement and she lives in Texas,so I'll prob have to buy it again. That my friends is my sister, who also lost back in the day,MY SEGA GENESIS+SEGA CD player. I played this all the time. Mostly WWF RAW,Sonic, and a Zombie game where a African-American with long braided hair takes you thorugh and you have to shoot the zombies, with a thick Jamacian(sp?) accent.

And other news, what the hell happens to all my Cassette Cases? I have no clue. AudioBooks are find,I mean Stand-Up Comedy & Music Cassettes. Who comes into peoples house and steals these things. The tapes are fine, but who knows about the cases.

I guess you can say it "vanished".

A couple years ago, while in the process of moving, I was tossing out old magazines. When flipping through an old issue of Esquire, I discovered the Netflix rental "Full Alert," a movie I'd rented SIX MONTHS prior. I think I had used the sleeve and the then just-watched DVD as a book mark.

I had about 20-30 DVDs disappear a few years back when an ex-girlfriend moved out of my house. Must have just been a coincidence, though...right?? :)

And fear not - I've repurchased most of the DVDs, and also kept a lot of her stuff, so we're even.

Wake Up Ron Burgundy, the Anchorman "sequel". The last time I recall seeing the case was on the shelf right next to Anchorman. I remember telling a friend about it who I thought I might've loaned it to, but he swears he never borrowed it. I live alone and don't invite people over who I don't trust. It is a mystery.

I'm missing the disc to Wayne's World 2. The case is there.. but the disc is no where to be found. I have no Idea where it could be either.

This one freaks me out. I went to watch "In The Bedroom", opened the box, and no disc. WTF?!?!?! Also Austin Powers 3 and one other that I forget. I could see one of my kids friends taking AP3, but In The Bedroom? (Unless they thought it had lots of nude scenes. Imagine their reaction if this was the case.)

I hope it was something stupid like putting it in another case doubled up, but I never do that. Kids may have tho. Haven't found it and it's been over a year.

Just realized my Sin City SE is no longer on my shelf. (!!!!) Weird thing is, there wasn't a gap in that row today.

After digging through most of my room, I hopped on DVDaff and found out that The Girl Next Door is also missing.

I thought I'd jump on here and vent some of my frustration. I couldn't possibly imagine somebody being in my room who would steal those two particular movies. Am I going insane? Did I even have those two titles to begin with? AHHH! Couldn't they have just taken my children or my pets?

Ladder 49 and Mr. & Mrs Smith come to mind as magically vanishing in our house, AND being replaced by an extra copy of Rush Hour 2 that was in the Ladder 49 case!! So thinking that Ladder 49 was in the Rush Hour 2 case I checked it... nope it has Rush Hour 2 in it... Go figure!

Had some DVD's stolen. Started thining out my collection around this time. Another problem I couldn't stand was the 50% depreciation in 6 months for so many. It's to be expected, but it did bother me. I ended up becoming strict and I do know everything that is there. I would notice it missing immediately now.

But, yeah. That really sucks and you have a really crappy friend or whoever. This happens to alot of people though. Just consider yourself lucky it's not something much worse like your grandfathers rolex from 1930 or the emergency money you have hidden (just examples). Use this incident as a small warning. There are a lot of item scoopers. Way more than you think.

Just realized my copy of Hoot which I received only last week (CH) is not in my Panasonic 5 disc DVD player. That is the last place I remember viewing it sometime last weekend. I usually don't remove the discs but leave them "stored" there and I powered it off. I thought it could've slipped off the carousel but I hear nothing unusual when the tray is spinning and the other 4 discs are playing normally. Looked thru my newest DVD binder where I have my latest discs (the only one I've been using lately) and it's not there either.

I probably misplaced it but I'm drawing a total blank now. *sigh*

:hscratch:

Edit: Darn! It had fallen off the carousel tray. :grumble: I couldn't think of anywhere else it could be so I disconnected the player and 1 quick turn upside down *ding* confirmed it. I then reconnected and spun the tray and there it sat dislodged but data side down. A few noticeable scratches but it plays ok. This probably had something to do with the Play 1 / Change 4 feature which I only recently started utilizing. I've had the player since January with no other problems. Lesson learned.

At first I thought no, not much, but after a second of thought...

-Elliott Smith's From a Basment on A Hill (CD)
-Smashing Pumpkins Meloncholy & The Infinite Sadness (CD, Both Discs)
-Probably a lot more cds; I tend to take them out of the cases and keep them in a binder, but some go missing for some reason...

-Simpson's, Season 4 ENTIRE SET - I think my old roomate 'borrowed' this one. Luckily, my g/f replaced it for me for my b-day.
-Bowling for Columbine - Had to re-buy it from DDD cause it was like $6, but I (stupidly) payed $20 when it was released. (Since then I've gotten a little wiser with how I spend my money).

-FF VII, (Game, PS1) - I had this a year ago, somehow lost during a move I guess...

I also, when reading this thread, saw someone mention that their 2-Disc Criterion of Life Aquatic went missing. I wondered if I had a single disc or 2, open the case and, *poof* discs is missing. My brother had it, got it back, but very odd.

I make it a point to lend from my extensive collection as much as possible with as few restrictions as possible - I just keep a log of who has what out and leave it at that. I've had people borrow dvds for months at a time without a problem.

In my 4-5 years of lending, I've only had 3 people "lose" a dvd. Each one was willing to pay to replace it, no problem. But I told them to hold off and see what happens. In each case, the discs were found usually more than a year later and usually when the borrower was in the process of moving to a new apartment or house and it turned up behind some obscure piece of furniture.
