The show is good, but apparently the presentation (dub, episode order) is not.

Not strictly anime, but Roughnecks is my favorite rendition of Starship Troopers and worth the $25 for the entire series.

The 2 Astro Boys on sale at Amazon & DDD are different sets. The black cover "Complete Series" at Amazon for $24.97 is 50 episodes on 5 discs, while the red cover "Collection" at DDD for $19.96 is 51 episodes on 8 discs. I understand this series has had several incarnations in the 50's through the 80's. Can someone please explain the difference between these sets and which is better?

I was wondering the same. I thought the series were made 2-3 years ago and also thought it was US made not japanese which also makes me wonder about the dub that someone mention above.

The red cover is the series from the 80's.

The Black cover is the series from I think 02 or 03.

I don't think either is subbed. All English.

From what I read the Black cover was when WB tried to re-release the series in 2003, with a new theme song and different voices, and got canceled immediately. The Red cover is the original series from 1980. I'd prefer the Red IMHO

Actually the "original" series is from the 60s(and coming out this year from RightStuf). All the other info given in this thread is correct though.

Yes the "original" is from the 60s w/c is black in white, the one I meant was the 80s is the same as the 60s but only in color. Unlike the 2003 re-release w/c they changed themes and voices (as I read)

I just got the original 60's series in a nice tin from Australia. I'm debating about the later two but the price may tip the scale.

The read cover is the 80's and it has both English and Japanese dialogue on ALL THE EPISODES. It also has a very nice collectors booklet. I bought it for $29 back in Dec. Its a steal at $19

And yes it is subbed.

So the black cover is actually the same episodes, redubbed with new music? or are they completely different episodes than the red cover? In other words, would there be any reason to own both?

I picked up Samurai Champloo Volume 1 from this sale and I have to say that it's great. I recommend it if you like Cowboy Bebop because it has a similar style in the way the scenes play out.

Yes, that is correct. It should be noted though that for some reason one show, Astro Boy Vs. Altas, was never released in the US. This episode is not included in this set.

Here are reviews to both series:

80's version (red box):

Black box:

The official rebate form is also at Geneon website:

http://www.geneonanimation.com/rebate/

The best part of the rebate is that you don't have to cut up your artwork for the UPC. Just the original receipt(s) will work.
