What do you thinnk about the new D-Skin DVD protectors ?

I just saw a TV new spot about D-Skins, protective covers that "snap" onto the disk to protect it from scratches. The D-Skin itself can get scratched but the disk will not. And you leave them on and play the disk with the cover on it still. They were something like $0.75 each.

I am just worried that they could get stuck or come off in the player - obviously only for tray players, no jukeboxes I would think. Also the way they showed it being "snapped" on made me wonder if just that process may cause some damage.

Would these be worth it or just another hype or "DVD warranty" being sold ?

Only saw this on the news, have not seen them in stores.

If you've got a DVD player that "eats" discs, that make something like this a necessity, you've got bigger problems.

I have some of these on my "rare" CD's and all i can say is that slot loading machines (of any kind) are out of the question.

And they don't "snap" they fit around the edge of the CD/DVD and have some "tabs" around the outside that hook under the very edge of the disc.

These have been around for about 18 months. I use them on my video games that is about it. They are a bit pricy at $1 each.

Slot loading drives are a hit or miss, they won't work in my car stereo but they work fine in my wifes car.

I read about these kinds of products from time to time along with those DVD buffers/refinishers and such.

I've got quite a few DVDs and I've never ever had any problem with a DVD developing scratches and becoming unplayable and/or skipping.

But, then again, I don't treat mine like a frisbee, either.

If you leave your discs laying around they are great.. My wife's brother has actually got some life out of his CDs and Games this time around with them. I'd find them useless however because I take great care of my stuff.

Not needed if you take care of your discs.

I guess if you have kids who leave all their discs laying on the floor then it could be worth it.

I agree, but more like the sony mini-discs would be really cool. I'm surprised they didn't pave the way themselves and develop the blu ray format into something like that. But I suppose backwards compatibility is a winning factor in this case. Not that I don't keep anal care of my dvds, but it would be nice to not have to be so careful with them. I hope a future format does something like this. It sure would be nice for people with kids who scratch everything. ;)

I think they're more for CD's than DVD's.
