Robert Altman to receive Honorary Oscar

From IMDB:

Movie mogul Robert Altman is to be honored at the Oscars in March with an Honorary Award. The Gosford Park director will be celebrated for "a career that has repeatedly reinvented the art form and inspired filmmakers and audiences alike." Altman has received five Academy Award nominations as a director and producer but has never taken home the Oscar. Academy President Sid Ganis says, "He is a master filmmaker and well deserves this honor. The board was taken with Altman's innovation, his redefinition of genres, his invention of new ways of using the film medium and his reinvigoration of old ones." The Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood on March 5

Excellent decision, he really deserves the honor!

Bah. I saw one of his movies. It was just a big rip-off of Magnolia.

I was just thinking...my 4 favorite English Language directors never received an Oscar for a particular film; Hitchcock, Kubrick, Scorsese & Altman.

Yeah, and he also had the audacity to take a great TV show (MASH) and turn it into a movie with none of the show's heart...

He must be near death or something. While he certainly deserves the honor, I hate the timing of it. My favorite of his is 3 Women.

My favorite director finally get his due (albeit their version of a consolation prize). If you haven't, see "California Split", check it out, one of his best (and rarely seen), one of these days they'll put "The Wedding" on DVD and i'll be a happy camper (what does that expression mean exactly? are campers unusually happy?)

A Wedding is on DVD in R2. I got it from CD Wow:

It's a bit pricey but if one wants it...

A Wedding is being released in R1 on April 25. The catch is that it's part of a four movie set (along with MASH, A Perfect Couple and Quintet) and it does not appear that you can buy it separately.

I absolutely love Short Cuts. He should win it just for that. His filmography overall is pretty hit or miss though.

Thanks for the info, i wish they'd put on commentary for all of them (Quintet NEEDS commentary...im still not sure what that was about) but why put MASH in there when its available elsewhere? They should sub MASH with another little seen one from the late 70's, (OC and STIGGS maybe) a mixed bag quality-wise but would make more sense
