Beautiful set. I used to watch the show religiously as a kid (!), but it's one of those shows that I don't find a great deal of replay value in. Certain stories make for nice repeated viewing, but there's a lot of ones that I wouldn't care to see again.

Is this just all of the previously released 'collections' in a big box?

From the description on Davisdvd.com, these are just reissues with one bonus "Treasures" disc. The big question now is whether there is a way to buy the Treasures disc and awesome looking case seperately if you already purchased all the sets. I mean if you were a fan of the show, there is a good chance you already bought the prior sets.

Great, for those who bought the previous sets (like myself) we now get screwed out of a cool case and bonus disc. Wonderful. Its not like this is a huge series that a ton of people bought, but the main people who actually purchased them are diehard fans, not casual viewers.

Tvshowsondvd.com has more info on the Ultimate Collection release and the Best Of... DVDs. The SRP for the Ultimate Collection is pretty low for such an elaborate packaging. Nice bargain during the next 20% off DDD sale.

It doesn't make sense from a marketing standpoint but you could try asking the manufacturer.

Well, I know it's been done in the past for other titles (Friends and Lord of the Rings come to mind), so I wasn't sure...I'm bummed about it, because I got them all before the big price drop (they were 39.99, now I believe they're 19.99 each), and that box looks awesome. But I know selling them now - even with four of them unopened - won't get the return needed to buy the new set.

I wasn't interested in this series UNTIL they came out with the treasure chest.

My favorites are the murders and stuff (are any of the ones on the DVDs "Updated"/solved ones does anyone know?), so I'm considering this for the DDD sale.

Also as a big UM fan, I've been getting hooked on Forensic Files on CourtTV recently, I'm hoping to see that come out on DVD as well.

Same here; the murders and disappearances. Probably the spookiest show in TV history. Unlike similar shows like "Amerca's Most Wanted", Unsolved was actually extremely stylish and atmospheric. And the original theme music (which was unfortunately watered down over the years) adds to the show's chilling effect.
One of my fave segments is the one about the small-town girl who called her boyfriend late at night from a payphone in the deserted center of town. She related to her boyfriend that a creepy man had parked nearby and was approaching her; the boyfriend overheard as she was abducted. Being a short distance away, he raced to the scene and saw his girlfriend struggling with a greaseball in a pickup truck that was taking off in the opposite direction. When he slammed his car into reverse in order to turn around and follow, he damaged his transmission and could only watch as the pickup disappeared in the distance.

Great show is very close to being the equal of Unsolved. It was formerly known as "Medical Detectives", and played on TLC. There is a two-disc collection available. I have it, but haven't watched it yet. Best price: http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=GOL000140
You might also want to take a look at A&E's marvellous "Cold Case Files". It's on every Saturday night, and there's also a six-and-a-half-hour collection of episodes on DVD: http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ANE071846

I remember this as well. One of the most disturbing things to me is that there are stories like this that never have an update (meaning, ultimately, that these people just disappeared, and probably killed somwhere).

Another one that sticks in mind to me is a young boy who was killed, and his father was a Cop, and they were pretty sure it was a mentally disabled boy who was his friend that killed him. I THINK there was some solution to it after years and years, but not that I remember.

One of the worst experiences I had with the series was a 2-segment special (as in it went over the commercial break) on an eldery woman who claimed to be Anastasia) and after about 15 minutes of the back and forth between experts and such an text update read simply "DNA tests provide ______ is not Anastasia. What a waste of 15 minutes

Thanks for the other shows. I believe I've seen Cold Case Files before, but not the Medicial Examiners one I'll check them out in on TV and maybe pick some up next DDD sale.

Ahh... thanks for the heads up on that.
The first link I provided is to the double-disc "Forensic Files" set, and it's only $12. I merely pointed out that it was originally called "Medical Detectives" before moving to Court TV.
I remember this as well. One of the most disturbing things to me is that there are stories like this that never have an update (meaning, ultimately, that these people just disappeared, and probably killed somwhere).
Yes, it is disturbing. To my knowledge, although they had a good description of the kidnapper and his vehicle, the case in question has not been solved, and no body has been found. Another scary case is the disappearance of Jacob Wetterling.
Another one that sticks in mind to me is a young boy who was killed, and his father was a Cop, and they were pretty sure it was a mentally disabled boy who was his friend that killed him. I THINK there was some solution to it after years and years, but not that I remember.
I don't recall this one.

The Russian princess killed by the Bolsheviks? Yes, what a scheming old woman. They should have confronted the cow after the DNA revelation.

It was the best of that is $19.86 at Wal Mart. I picked it up yesterday. The fact that the segment about the fertility statues is on there is offensive to fans, since it's shown so much on lifetime and is far from the best of, but oh well, the update sound cue in 5.1 surround is really scary and the tribue to Robert Stack is decent, since I don't own the previous sets it is on.

Sorry to drag this one up from the graveyard, but just got this in today after 2 months of waiting from DDD (2 lost shipments later...)

First off, the box is beautiful. I'm a big fan. The only problem is that it's sometimes tough to close if the disks aren't lined up correctly.

The disks/cases: I love the covers, and the disks are pretty good.

The content: My only major gripe is that there seems to be a huge chunk of UM content missing. Namely "Missing Persons" which included some of the strangest stories as well as "The Unexplained" which was a much wider topic on the show than UFOs/Psychics that the set provides (though all and all they did include a lot of material from these segments, but I would have liked to see a wider variety). Finally, "Lost Loves" which I personally am glad is nowhere to be found, as it was the worst part of the show IMHO.

Extras: The extras that I've watched thus far have been pretty good. The Robert Stack tribute was touching.

General Questions/Complaints: My big question is: Why wasn't the original music used? I don't know anyone that prefers the new "Lifetime" music to the original NBC music, and since it's a remix, wouldn't royalities be similar regardless? Secondly, while the sheer number of stories per disc is impressive at a good quality, I have to say I would have liked to have seen the original Robert Stack openings to each segment as well (you know, him walking through the fog, etc).

All and all, this set is a dream come true for UM fans like myself. Aside from a few minor complaints and (in this viewers opinion) an overabudance of certain segments (Mircales for example), the set it a great value compared to the old sets and is well worth the purchase ever for casual viewers.

I got this set about a month ago but haven't had a chance to to watch any yet. But i did go through the set to check for floaters. After checking each disk i found about 5 that had some scratches. It's not that big of a problem because i have free access to a resurfacer machine. I would definately recommend checking all the disks asap.

Are you serious? That's crap! half the fun of watching UM is getting creeped out by the music when the show starts.

Are you serious? That's crap! half the fun of watching UM is getting creeped out by the music when the show starts.

Ya, it's the newer intro music, which is like a lame techno remix of the original theme. And the same music is used for the credits at the end of each disk, which sucks because the original end credits music was just as creepy.
