Showboat News for Warner! Lost Reels Found!
Pulled this from HTF. I know this has been on many classic film fans want list. Looks like you can tuck away those criterion laserdisc, as the new dvd's should be far superior. Lets hope the commentaries come over with it.

From the Vitaphone Project website - great news.

"1929 SHOWBOAT DISCS FOUND
The 1929 version of SHOWBOAT was partially reconstructed with most, but not all, of the soundtrack discs for a 1990's laserdisc set. Several reels had no surviving sound, and excerpts from existing discs were used to fill in the gap. Among the missing were discs for reels 9 and 11. Both were found this summer and are now held by the Project. We will make them available to Warner Home Video when they assemble their planned 2007 DVD set of all three versions of SHOWBOAT (1929, 1936 and 1951) to commemorate the Broadway show's 80th anniversary. The newly discovered discs include dialogue, music and singing throughout, so are a significant find."
Can't wait - it will be excellent to get all 3 musicals together on DVD.

Let me also say, that with all the raiding of the vaults that has been going on, looking for better masters and extras for dvd releases...lets hope that more incredible finds like this keep happening.

DVD Talk Legend
Have the current LD set and will definitely look forward to this future DVD set. Personally the James Whale version is still my favorite, but I would love to see the 1929 version restored.

from the HTF Chat
It is still our plan to release THE COMPLETE SHOW BOAT with 1929, 36, and 51 in Ultra-Rez, but it won't happen this year. Perhaps next. Contrary to what false information you may have read elsewhere, we have no plans to release the MacDonald/Eddy films anytime soon. Serious film element issues requiring restoration prevent our releasing them on a more expedited basis. We want them to be beautiful and sound great when they finally are released.
