it doesn't have to be really in depth. just a good overview of early times and the catholic vs. protestant conflict. thansk.

If you prefer your history cloaked in fiction then The Princes of Ireland: The Dublin Saga by Edward Rutherfurd covers 430 A.D. to 1537 A.D., and his upcoming The Rebels of Ireland will cover the rest (well, at least up to the 1800's).

I enjoy his writing style, which reminds me of Michener, but it can be disorienting to turn the page and jump 200 years.

Robert Kee has a good rep' as a historian about things pertaining to the Irish. You could try his book "Ireland: A History". There are used copies etc. available on Amazon UK.

I haven't read it myself but then I'm supposed to know this stuff. :-).
