new Casino: Special Edition dvd ?

does anyone know of any differences between this apparently new 'Casino: Special Edition' dvd being released on Jan 17 2006, and the current '10th Anniversary Edition' dvd?

One would hope it would be two discs instead of a DVD-18 but it isn't likely.

Looks like a price drop. The cover is exactly the same.

I'm sure it's just a typo but it states the SE as 178 min. runtime

the 10th Ann. is listed as 179 min. runtime.

Amazon has been known to do this when another run of an existing product is about to go out. I'm willing to bet that it's exactly the same release.

Amazon.com has a funny way of confusing so many of their customers. It's the same exact release as the current DVD-18 version.

The covers are not EXACTLY the same. One says "10th Anniversary" on the top the other says "special edition". And also Amazon is not the only place to be listing this as a new release, it's virtually everywhere. It's got its own listing on dvdpricesearch as well.

I just used Amazon as an example. This new release is available everywhere. They are definitely two different releases with 2 different UPCs.

See for yourself at DVDPlanet:

Why is Universal doing this? Is there any different content?

I have yet to buy the current release so I'm hoping they pull a switcharoo and release this as a 2 disc without much fanfare like they did with the T2: UE a couple of years ago

Same here.

Looks like casino "anniversary" is taking 1 to 2 days to ship? I'm torn now. Should i buy the anniversary edition before they out of print it or will the special edition release be the same stuff plus more?

a user review on Amazon.com sheds some light onto what this release is. It's a single DVD-9 release.

New version of last year's Anniversary Edition that actually works..., February 20, 2006
Reviewer: Andrew Bunk "bunkaroo" (Chicago West Suburbs, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This new "Special Edition" is a watered down version of last year's Anniversary Edition. Usually this is a bad thing. However, since Universal can't seem to figure out how to make a DVD-18 work properly, it's actually good they have seen fit to release this title as a single-sided, dual-layered DVD. Unfortunately, in doing so they have dropped most of the extras found on the Anniversary Edition. Still found on this release are the deleted scenes, the commentary and one of the featurettes.

Why they didn't decide to do 2 DVD-9's for this is beyond comprehension, but at least they've dropped the list price a few dollars.

My rating is for the overall the release, although in my opinion both the film and the transfer on this release get 5 stars. Colors are vivid and rich, and detail is very fine.

In closing, if you're not a "special features" junkie, definitely get this release, as it's much more likely to play properly. If you must have the Anniversary Edition, make sure you play the disc right away, because most likely, it will have problems.

Glad to see I was wrong, as this is basically a stripped down version of the original DVD-18. I have to laugh at Universal though, for having to release a watered down DVD-9 of this, I think it would have cost them far less to make it a 2-disc set to begin with. Morons.

I am lucky that I haven't had any problems with my copy, it's the DVD-18 version. Still, DVD-18 gives consumers fits, Universal might be starting to realize this.

I posted that review at Amazon aroundthe same time I posted the info in one of the other threads here.

The SE release is definitely the way to goif you don't care about extras, and want a functional disc. Best Buy also seems to have the newer version in good quantities as well. At least it has a different UPC so you can tell the difference.

Is this new version getting a new UPC different from the anniversary edition? I just want to make sure there is a way to distinguish between the two in the stores.

You have to love Universal. Instead of giving people who bought the previous edition with disc problems an exchange program, Universal quietly re-issues the disc and does not tell anyone.

Fok,

The transfer is gorgeous IMO. I never screened the old disc on my current setup, but I think the SE (not the DVD-18) would be worth it to you once it drops under $10, assuming it's not announced for HD.

saw both versions at my local BB last night finally. the old one had the shiny holofoil sleeve, this new "SE" version has a plain paper sleeve (no foil enhancement).
