This came with little fanfare and now it is here. Directed by Eli Roth of "Cabin Fever" fame and presented by Quentin Tarantino.

So far the reviews are 89% fresh at RT and has me wanting to see it.

C'mon now. Be all know Harry Knowles is the most biased fat dude reviewing movies today. But back to subject, this movie does look interesting. Although I did think that Cabin Fever is criminally overrated.

I've finally convinced my girlfriend to see this movie with me, so hopefully we'll be able to see it ASAP. I'd managed to avoid all the horror fanboy gushing that's apparently been going on for the last few months, but I've still heard nothing but positive things about this flick.

Lionsgate is making an odd choice with HOSTEL, only allowing certain press to see the film, and not everybody (as is the norm). Don't expect a lot of reviews on this film.

i just think that is so too many sources don't reveal too much. i don't think it is one of those not showing because it is bad deals.

If that is what's happening, I'm assuming it's because they know most of the mainstream critics are going to hate it. I'm not expecting good reviews, but I am expecting to enjoy this film (and hopefully leave the theater really uncomfortable).

This is the same company that had no problem screening SAW II or ALONE IN THE DARK.

Again, it's just odd.

We'll see what happens with UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION, which, as of this point, also looks like it's going out without press screenings.

Well, if they only target critics who they believe will give it a favorable review (horror sites, etc.) they can potentially have a higher percentage at Rotten Tomatoes but still have enough reviews available to pull favorable quotes from. It's a bit shady but I can see the logic in it.

yeah, if this is right, i don't agree with the strategy. they should be confident enough or at least not give a sh** what the "main" reviewers think and show it to the world of them, rather than the horror elite or something. and i might have to wait until "viewers like me" reviews before i totally decide to see it or not.

Yeah I don't belive the Saw III Roth rumor. He had plenty of opportunities to direct mainstream studio horror films after Cabin Fever (such as House of Wax, etc.) but he turned them down in favor or an original work.

I think the Saw III thing is on rottentomatoes, actually, so don't bluff me and say bullshit. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1155431-saw_3/. Why wouldn't Roth want to Saw III, it is a good fun series with flaws and I think Roth would make a great mark on it.

I wouldn't believe the Saw III rumor. Since Cabin Fever, Eli Roth has been attached to numerous projects (an adaptation of Stephen King short story "1408", a collaboration with Donnie Darko's Richard Kelly, a teen comedy about a scavenger hunt), none of which have come to fruition.

I wasn't that impressed with Cabin Fever (even grading on a curve for a first feature), but the buzz is humming on this one, so I'm definately giving it a try. And on a related rant, is nothing good anymore unless Quentin Tarantino says it is?

Here's part of an interview with Roth in the new issue of Time Out:

Time Out: "The inspiration from Hostel came from a ...website"

Roth: "Harry Knowles from Ain't It Cool News sent me a link to this site where...."

So Harry probably feels he has a vested interest in the film.

P.S. - Time Out gives the movie a great review.

The RT rating is not a good way to judge the critical reception of a film at the moment. Since I checked it out last night and there were less than 10 reviews up. So of course since the majority were in favor of the film. The 'official' rating on the site was 89% Fresh.

Now once you get 30+ reviews for a film with various opinions will you see a far different 'fresh' rating

Either way I'm still very interested in seeing the film on opening night,hopefully with a packed audience. Since reactions from casual horror fans/movie viewers should be quite a treat since they're not prepared for this stuff.

A bit? I think it's pretty bad...

To me, only showing the film to easy-lay horror websites (who were given a chance to meet Roth as bait) is up there with David Manning-style theatrics.
