When all else fails, turn to my beloved DVDtalkers for help.

My bday is in February (oy vey, turning 33!!) and the gfriend wants to take me to Vegas. But, and I know this is strange, she's tasked me with finding and booking the hotel while she does the shows, activities, etc.

Anyway, I'm going crazy from perusing all the hotel sites like Orbitz, Hotels.com, Travelocity etc. and looking for a promotional code and/or best deal on a 2-night stay (2/17-2/19) at a major strip hotel (NYNY, Mirage, Luxor, MGM etc.) but not the ultra fancy schmancy ones (a'la Bellagio, Venetian etc.)

Any ideas for finding the best room rates or if there's any first timer discounts on the aforementioned travel sites?

PS - we're driving there from So. Cal. so no air travel needed

Gracias!

Eek, that's a weekend so it will be tough to find a cheap room.

http://www.frontierlv.com/ 600 sq. ft. suite for about $115 a night. I stayed in these in Aug during the week and they were great rooms, decent location, etc.

The Barbary Coast is also a great place that is generally cheap.

Make sure to spend a little time at www.cheapovegas.com

Also check out the Poker subforum of Other for some good tips.

Cheap rooms in Vegas on the weekend are hard to come by. One thing you might want to try is just making sure you get a good room at a normal price - for example, the Tropicana doesn't change the rates too much from weekday to weekend, whereas a place like Bally's is quite affordable during the week but the rates double or more on the weekend.

You're not going to find anyone giving rooms away on the weekend, though. Sorry.

Use Priceline.com, they can have some great deals sometimes.

Before bidding, use www.biddingfortravel.com for research and help.

Why is that particular weekend going to be expensive? I was planning a trip that weekend also.

That isn't all that expensive for a weekend there anymore. But there may be two factors for it....it is still cold for a lot of us and Vegas may get more visitors in winter (I generally go in August when it is 110 degrees), or it is very likely that there is one or more convention going on.

lasvegas.com and lvtb.com are good sites.

Try the Vegas/Poker sub-forum too.

It's also the weekend following Valentine's Day... and that's President's Day weekend.

Im not sure what the prices are, but you might want to look into the Monte Carlo. Its a very nice casino/hotel yet very affordable. IMO its much better than MGM, NYNY and even the mirage, but maybe thats just me. If you stay at luxor, make sure you stay in the external towers as they offer much nicer rooms and its more quiet than the pyramid, at least in my experience.

A travel deal site I like to frequent is www.travelzoo.com via their vegas specific section. Every Wednesday they post up their Top 20 deals sometimes including Vegas deals. I've gotten a few good rates from their Vegas section for the ocassional convention weekend. So far I found $105 a night for your specified weekend at the Stratosphere at the time of this post. Being a holiday weekend, it will be difficult getting a good rate.

Another alternative is to consider staying at Downtown Vegas rather than the Strip. You can often find rates as low as $40/night on weekends. Just be weary of low end hotels so pay attention to customer reviews. Just to give you an idea, I'm going on CES weekend to Vegas, Jan 6-8, at $39/night at Binion's Horseshoe(Purchased almost 6 months in advance). Presently the cheapest rate is about $200+/night anywhere near the strip. Being only about 5-10 min locally from the main parts of the strip, the money I saved I can put towards eating out or going to show.

Here's my advice for low-budget Vegas trip:

1. Stay at a hotel away from the strip.
2. Park at a hotel on the strip and go on foot to view any attractions you care to see.
3. The earlier you can buy your tickets, the better. Most travel agents offer lowest rate guarantees just incase prices do drop(Check with each agents policies on this)

Also as with all things in Vegas, a little luck always helps.
