Anyone willing to help me setup for xbox live?
I'm a complete nub when it comes to what I need as far as routers and such in order to connect my xbox to live. Here is what I got:
My computer connected via cable modem in a seperate room from my 360.
No routers
It would be rather difficult for me to hard wire directly from my PC to the 360 in my apartment because of the distance between the two.
So what do i need in order to connect? A wireless router? The 360 wireless adapter? Or if I dont necessarily have to have my 360 tied to my PC could I just get a seperate cable modem and connect my 360 that way?
Sorry for my ignorance in this stuff but if someone could tell me exatly what I need to buy to get connected I'd appreciate it.

if you dont want to use wires, you're going to need
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1126591945477
or
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1075583597958
(dont get a non-microsoft ones, they're garbage)
and a wireless router
like

you can find probably find this cheaper
i have 2 360s, 2 xboxes and 2 ps2s hooked up with this router and those wireless adapters. they work well most of the time. I'd try to find the old version (the 2nd one) if you can find it if you plan to hook up anything else (ps2/3 revolution)because you can hook up multiple devices with it, i dont think you can with the newer one.you need an extra power outlet for the old one too.

Kmart had the 360 adapter for $49.99 earlier this month ... not sure if they are still that price... picked one up myself and used a $10 off $50 coupon in store to make it even cheaper... I'll post that thread if I can find it again
found it...

Im not that concerned with having it linked to my pc, could I just get another cable modem and hook it up that way? Would this cause any problems with my internet access with comcast?

well they would probably charge you for 2 lines of service, etc... just buy router and hook it up that way. Its pretty straight forward to connect.
If you buy a wireless router you can still hardwire (depending on how close your cable modem/router, etc are you could use the cable that came with the 360) it and therefore not need a wireless adapter for the 360, and you can still go wireless later should you decide to do so.

If you are close enough, you can buy a router for $20 AR from BB, and be running for the cost of the router and cables. If you go wireless, you will have the cost of an router, and an extra $100 for the MS network adapter.
Even though I have wireless in my house, I am running wired because the cable was ~$30 for 50' so I still saved $70.

Actually, you're much better off buying a router and hooking up your cable modem where the TV and 360 are right now. Then you only need to buy a $20-30 wireless card for your PC.
There is absolutely NO NEED to buy a "wireless game adapter" for the 360. You're better off buying a free-standing Linksys type unit which will let ANY console (Xbox, PS2, Xbox 360, PS3) hook into it. They are usually less than the game adapter to begin with.

If you can find one for a good price, a wireless bridge is the best bet if you need to have the console use a wireless connection. It'll allow you to use any device with an ethernet port wirelesly. I was able to get one for about 30 bucks after rebate from amazon a few months ago.

you're going to need this
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...=251600&ps=nw3
and this
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...uctCode=251778
the wireless adapter that is for the 360 is nice, but for the price i'd get a real wireless adapter (bridge) which will be better off anyway. if you go this route send me a message and i can give you help on how to get on line. i'm "the company computer guy" so i'll help as much as you need!

Okay for now I am just moving my cable modem from my pc to my 360 when I want to play, only takes a few seconds so my problem is pretty much solved on that end. I signed up to live but now another problem has arose:
When I got my 360 I chose a username a few weeks ago since then I have beat COD2, Condemed, Tons of cars and medals on PGR.
Well tonight i signed up for live but the name for my profile was already taken so I had to make a new one. Problem is that all my achievments and cars from my other profile is gone. Is there anyway I can transefer that over to my live profile or am I just screwed and have to beat everything again?
Any help would be much appreciated.

The same thing happened to me, although I didn't beat the game, I believe I asked this question in the technical discussion thread, so you may want to watch there for an answer as well.

So basically if you have an offline profile and then need to change that to another name for some reason (like creating an Xbox live profile with a different name because someone already has that gamertag), you lose everything that's been unlocked/achievements, etc?
I haven't played when the blades on my 360 alot yet (getting ready to take a trip and haven't connected my 360 in its permanent location yet... taking it with me on the trip since I'm getting hooked up with a game while there ),
is there no way to select a profile or copy data from one profile to another then? What about save games?
