Something set it the present day and that isn't a comedy or detective story?

Like the movie heat?

There are quite a few good contemporary crime/noir authors.

I'd recommend looking at the books of Charlie Stella (http://www.charliestella.com/) or Jason Starr (http://members.aol.com/Jasonstarr/), who are two of the best.

Eddie Muller's The Distance is a great period noir set in the world of boxing.

Victor Gischler's Gun Monkeys was one of the best crime debuts in recent years.

Scott Phillips' The Ice Harvest (which was recently adapted as a film) should be easy to find.

Duane Swierczynski's The Wheelman, which was published recently, was one of my favorites of the year.

There are plenty more where that came from, too. The crime genre is really quite vibrant today.

The Atticus Kodiak novels by Greg Rucka are great.
