It appears to be a Lite-On 1633S or 1653S.

X,
I read the same thing....and my gf did some searching and people's reviews at cdfreaks.com was that it is decent, not the best, but good for the price.

Yeah, it appears to be ok if you flash it with real Lite-On firmware.
At that price or a few bucks more I'd get an NEC drive though.

I am still debating on biting on this or something else....will check around for NEC
The one I use just died today after about 8 months (Micro Advantage cheapie) from OfficeMax.

For what it's worth, here is the drive I have been considering:

Any opinions?

Any opinions?Other than I wouldn't buy anything from a store with such a bad reputation as TigerDirect and you can get a newer model NEC cheaper at Newegg, I'd say the NEC is a good drive.
I have bought from newegg.com before and never had any problems except for a D.O.A. motherboard that they quickly replaced.

Well, I decided to go with a Sony DRU-800A that Best Buy had on clearence for $29.99 (after $30 mail in rebate). So I paid 64.xx and will mail in for the $30.
This may belong in the Tech forum but I figured the answer may also benefit those looking at this deal...
Is there such a thing as Dual Layered Read/Writeable discs? If so, any bargain on just a few? I'm experimenting a lot these days with home videos as well as instructional videos and would like to have the added storage. However, its great to have the RW format so that once I check the final product out on a couple of different players that are used, I can simply reuse the Media.
thanks.

AFAIK, there is only write-once Dual Layer media, no re-writable.

You can't go wrong with the DL NEC drive from Newegg. I use that for DVDs and a LiteOn burner for CDs and never have problems.

This may be a silly question, but are these pretty universal in terms of size? I have been looking to get one to put into my computer, just wasnt sure if it would fit in my computer...

DVD burners are pretty universal in terms of size. However if you have a problem with the length of a standard burner Lite-Ons are significantly shorter. I put a Lite-On reader in a small, cramped computer for just that reason.
