1. "The Killer" Criterion Collection...and not because it is OOP and has some value, but because I love the movie!
When I was much younger, or at least a little younger, I took out a video from the Westport Public Library in Westport, CT. This was a time when someone turned me on to the free videos at libraries. So, I started watching/getting into classics. I took out things like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and well, that is all I can remember. But, I remember coming across a video that didn't look particularly nice, chafed label tape, etc..But it said it was directed by John Woo and I knew he directed a movie I happened to love greatly in "Face/Off" . So, I got it.
I popped it in to my "VCR" and to my total surprise it had...egad! subtitles! But, I decided to watch it anyway. Not only was this my first movie with subtitles, but it was an amazing one at that. It blew me away, figuratively.
It had everything I loved...great story, poetry in motion, and gut-busting, edge-of-your-seat action! I was immediately enamored of this marvel of a movie. I couldn't believe that with one viewing, I not only turned myself on to HK action flicks (of course I didn't know it as such then), but also "movies with subtitles". So, I bought the VHS tape (DVD's hadn't been invented back then, or actually they were, but I couldn't find the DVD version of it).
And thus began my journey to not only discovering great movies that I wasn't in the remote vicinity of (aka foreign cinema) but, began my journey to getting this on DVD. And consequently, I came into a copy of "The Killer" Criterion Collection because a store was just giving it away...in exchange for money.
Lastly, with this release, I began my love for DVD collecting, understanding its' importance and the value of quality treasures in ones' collection. Basically, the movies you love!

2. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Chosen Collection"...it is just my favorite series of all time and I contemplated buying some seasons and not others. I taped my favs. including "Hush" and countless more. Bought a R2 "Once More With Feeling" and this gorgeous crimson box is heaven sent and Joss Whedon inspired. "I'm lovin' it".
3. "Die Hard: Five Star Collection"...this is my favorite movie of all time and one of the only DVD sets that I watched every single extra and enjoyed every single extra. I loved that I could create my own angle for certain scenes and so much more. This was probably the first set that I enjoyed all the way through and for me that is saying a lot!
ps) include a story, tidbit, or just list...

1. The Ultimate Matrix Collection (Limited Edition Neo bust) - Each disc has its on little tray unlike the normal box which has the discs packaged like sardines. Perfect PQ. Room-shattering sound. Extras that delve into every aspect of the matrix mythology, including those who hated the films.
2. Gladiator Signature Selection - The original and still the best DVD edition
3. The Hunted (Benicio Del Toro, Tommy Lee Jones) - I know this is an oddball but I must say this DVD has the most active DD 5.1 track I have ever heard.

2. Pulp Fiction: Collector's Edition It's my favorite movie of all time. I'm not going to go in to how much I love it (and why) too much, cause I have before. I saw this movie five times in the theater when it first came out, and there's many memories that go with it. On top of that, the DVD is packed with great stuff.
3. The Deer Hunter: Legacy Series I love this movie (and the DVD). This is my favorite performance by my favorite actor, Robert De Niro. Not much in the way of extras, but the texture of the casing is really nice.

Okay, I'm cheating. Here's my top 5:
Black Hawk Down 3-disc: Great movie and great extras.
Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series: I only wish it was the OOP Yearbook Edition instead. =(
Hoosiers SE: One of the best extras ever, IMO: the 1954 Indiana State Championship game. A shame more DVDs don't include the source material/"inspiration" for the films as extras.
Battlestar Galactica/Firefly: Both season sets and both blind buys. Was immediately hooked on both.
(Scott, John Woo's Killer had the same effect on me. Picked up the VHS copy at a mom-and-pop rental place with Reservoir Dogs and fell in love with both.)

Awfully tough to just pick three favorite DVDs. My choices would be different if I just picked my three favorite movies on DVD of all time, but one of my favorites, Somewhere In Time, looks atrocious on DVD in both it's releases. None of these are really collectible, but have great picture and audio quality and are movies I love. For three I would have to say I return to over and over I'll say-
Saving Private Ryan
The Bourne Identity
T3 (yes, T3, not T2....tough choice for me)
For being entertained, the best bang for the buck for me would be-
The Godfather DVD Collection
The James Bond Collection
The Kill Bill Twin Pack (Japanese)
The 007 set is the ONE doubledip I know for sure I'll make when it's released with the new DTS/Lowry digital treatment and added commantaries.
Special mention to TV season sets like South Park, Seinfeld, Kolchak and Columbo.....hours of great watching for the money.

3. Akira Kurosawa- Four Samurai Classics (Criterion)

It has a bunch of great extras, but most important, the anamorphic image kills the Criterion disc's non-anamorphic image.

1. LOTR Trilogy EE - The most superior dvds and incredibly interesting + entertaining. I know it's pretty sad but I worked out how much material there is (all three 4 disc editions, with commentaries) over 80 hours+ picture galleries.
2. Band Of Brothers - This is dvds not favourite films or anything right? Amazing series with great dvd set.
3. Ben-Hur - Excellent film, though not a favourite. However the 4 disc edition is outstanding, with the 1925 version.

Hhmmm..not favorite movies but DVD's would be.
1. Dances with Wolves DTS (imho this disc still has better sound than anything out there!) Truly amazing sound. Also, Apollo 13 DTS is up there too.
2. Citizen Kane (Amazing quality, with an awesome commentary)
3. Twlight Zone: The definitve Set. Totally amazing that they could get the old shows to look this good. (My wifes "I Love Lucy" sets are pretty nice too)

Band of Brothers - Simply gripping from start to finish. And how I love tin cases.
Army of Darkness (R3 MGM) - Beautiful picture, amazing 5.1 track, and it has the crazy "He-Man" Ash cover art.
Clue - kidding. :)
Battle Royale (R3 Starmax) - my first import purchase, singlehandedly opened me up to the world of going multi-region. The heavy silkscreened cardboard case is damn nifty and the movie is simply a classic.

even though I'm buried on page 5, here goes:
1. Band of Brothers - I love pretty much everything about this release. Usually, when it comes to TV shows or miniseries, I don't buy due to limited replay value. But I've watched this series several times and it keeps getting better.
2. The Rock: Criterion - This is one of my favorite action movies and Criterion did a fantastic job on the release. Probably my most watched DVD.
3. Tie Between
Black Hawk Down (3-disc)
and
Kingdom of Heaven (4-disc) - two of the best DVD presentations ever! Truly wonderful films too.

1. Star Wars (Ep IV, the original). I saw this at least seven times in the theater, and even though I now know that Empire Strikes Back is a better movie, the original (or what passes for it on DVD) still strikes a chord.
2. The Band Wagon. I first saw this film in the late 60's (I think) when PBS was showing several classic musicals uncut. It sparked my interest in Fred Astaire and in MGM musicals. I've waited since the dawn of DVD for this movie to be released.
3. Bull Durham. Flat out the best baseball movie ever. My wife and I can't even watch a game on TV without commenting on china patterns or taking the hex off the bat or lollygagging, etc. etc. We watch it every year before heading to Arizona to see a couple of spring training games. Plus, I had the privilege of seeing Ron Shelton in a panel duscussion at Wordstock in Portland last year.
Unfortunately, that leaves out films such as The Godfather Pt 1 and 2, North by Northwest and other Hitchcock films of that era (Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo), Singin' in the Rain, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Before Sunrise, and Before Sunset.

1. Yellow Submarine - I waited for years to see the opening graphic say "Once upon a time" instead of "nce upon a tim." Plus, to be able to see it so pristine and with the "Hey Bulldog" sequence. And best of all, they played it at the Seantor in Baltimore to commemorate its arrival on DVD. Perhaps the best movie experience of my life.
2. The Iron Giant - Hmmmm boy! Its not even the updated version and the cover has been ripped off of the case about three or four times by my boys, but no tape would have held up to the number of viewings this film has had in our house. At one point, when he was about two, my eldest son must have watched the thing 2 times a day. And the great thing is that they (and we) still love it, and as they get older, enjoy it even more.
3. Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Volume Two - What can I say? This set makes me want to sing-a, to croon about the moon-a in a June-a. What's not to love? Contains so many favorites, including Slick Hare ("One lemon marango pie") and You Ought to Be in Pictures. But, admittedly, it does have one unforgivable exclusion. A disc of Roadrunner/Coyote cartoons and no sign of "Operation Rabbit." Sure, there's no Roadrunner but it really belonged there. What super-genious blew that opportunity?

Band of Brothers - Excellent set from packaging to the miniseries. Worth every penny.
Akira (Limited Edition Tin) - My fav anime and what a cool collectors item.
Robocop (Criterion Collection) - Uncut Robocop! Could you ask for a anything better?
Honorable Mentions:
Star Trek TNG Season Sets - Probably my fav TV show with excellent packaging. I just wish that they would have included text commentaries on the episodes.
Star Wars Trilogy

1: Buffy The Vampire Slayer Chosen Collection/Buffy Season 4-7 Region 2 Widescreen sets (TIE. These 4 UK sets cost me $240. More than double of what I ended up getting my 7 season Chosen Colllection for.)
2: Angel complete series (I don't have to pick just one do I? :)). The only difference between mine and the pick below is that my seasons 3 & 4 are the region 2 sets. I actually paid $117 for season 4, because I couldn't wait 9 months or so for the US release. Of course this was mostly because my best friend had just finished season 3 with me and was dying to continue asap.

excellent posts everybody.
Dawn of the Dead: Ultimate Edition - I dont remember the very first time i watched this fully, but oh man does it ever get my blood pumping. I was extremely happy when this wonderful set was announced, Anchor Bay out did themselves. Great extras, commentaries are superb, and 3 versions of the film all of which are excellent.
Videodrome: Criterion Collection - I remember first watching this film on IFC and not knowing WTF was going on, didnt know the director, I was completly lost, and i liked it. When this obscure title got picked to be apart of the CC i knew i had to purchase it if only to have such bizarre happenings in my collection. This movie quickly grew to my top list of favourites, and introduced me to Cronenberg. Long Live The New Flesh!
Firefly: Complete Series - Well all i can say about this is internet buzz does not do it justice. Blind bought this on the many rave reviews heard all around, what a magnificent show, everything is brilliant, i dont think i will love my own children as much as i do this show. Maybe some day i will check out buffy and angel.
- Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection
Wonderful films, a fantastic felt case, and great extras. Even though I already had most of the older, single releases, I still bought this set without flinching.
- Legends of Hockey Series 1 & 2
Hockey is an obsession of mine (I grew up in Minnesota) and this documentary takes great care in respecting the history, tradition, and magic of my favorite sport.
- The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Collection
By no means an original, off-beat selection here, but I'd be lying if I didn't list it here.
