Does anybody know if a collector's edition of Mission:Impossible is coming out? Because the original release dosen't have any bonus features except a trailer. I mean M:I-2 got a SE and that wasn't as good as the first one.

I can finally get rid of that crappy non-anamorphic release. Hopefully this new version will be accompanied with a free ticket for M:I3.

 ... Nice to see. Dont really care about a 3 discer as I didnt like part 2, and not sure about 3 yet obviously, so an anamorphic version of the first is perfect. Another one on the list for this year.

I'll wait to see what extras are included. Chances are good that if it's released as a two-disc set with substantive extras, I'll buy it. Otherwise, I'll pass.

More than likely, it will be a revamped double-dip release similar to the Mask of Zorro "Deluxe Edition" that came with the free movie ticket. However, if we get Anamorphic WS, then that's reason enough to ditch the old.

I don't have the old disc, or a widescreen TV for that matter. I like the movie enough to support the studio by buying it, but only if they put some care into the release.

I loved both movies, but I'm not gonna expect much from Paramount on this. They have been making films for 95+ years, and only have a handfull of 2-disc special collectors editions? They will probably live up to thier reputation as the studio with the cheapest packaging and non existent special features. As for Paramount giving away free movie tickets--Dream on. I can't be the only one that feels that way? They really do have some great films and big stars, its almost like they diss themseleves with their cheap ass dvds.

Mr. Cinema
01-29-06, 08:26 AM
When I read comments about how bad and featureless Paramount dvds are, I think it's 1999. Every title they release now always has features and usually good audio and video. You can release a title as a 1-disc and it can still be a great dvd.

Some of their notable dvd titles:
Titanic: SE
Top Gun: SE
The Godfather Collection
The Adventures of Indiana Jones
Beverly Hill's Cop: SE
Deep Impact: SE
The Italian Job: SE
Tomb Raider: SE
The Longest Yard: SE
Forrest Gump: SE
Four Brothers: SE
Hustle and Flow: SE
Narc
Serpico
The Truman Show: SE
The Nutty Professor: SE
Tommy Boy: SE
Friday the 13th: Ultimate Edition
Star Trek 2-disc releases
War of the Worlds: SCE
the upcoming Ten Commandments: 3-Disc set

Yeah, they don't release 2-disc titles as frequently as Warner Bros. or Fox, but they usually don't force that many double dips either. I think they're consistent.

tofferman
01-29-06, 09:39 AM
I would be happy with simply an anamorphic enhancement. That fact alone qualifies a double dip to me. Extras are certainly welcomed, but are probably viewed like one time at best (by me at least). After MI3 comes out, and assuming it is a good flick, I wonder if Paramount would offer a box separately to house all three discs?

From dvdactive.com:

Title: Mission Impossible
Starring: Tom Cruise
Released: 11th April 2006
SRP: Around $19.99

Further Details:
Paramount Home Entertainment has sent over artwork for a new collector's edition of Mission Impossible which stars Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Ving Rhames and Emmanuelle Beart. The disc will be available to own from the 11th April, and should retail at around $19.99. I'm afraid we have no word on extra material for this one yet, but you can almost certainly expect a nice new anamorphic widescreen transfer. We'll bring you the full spec rundown shortly. For now though, here's the first look at the official package art:

Surprisingly nice cover art...really looking forward to the feature/spec listing. My guess: no commentary. I don't think Brian DePalma has ever done one (correct...?). But seeing as how it's Paramount, I'm expecting five to seven featurettes on various aspects of the film and no trailer. Still, anamorphic will be nice.

I'll be glad to finally retire my current non-anamorphic edition. For those that remember the promotion, this was one of my choices when the now defunct online company 800.com was running their 3 DVD's for $1 sale back in '99(?). For $.33, the DVD served me well for all these years but it is certainly due for an upgrade. I just hope that this new version includes DTS :fc:

I'm wondering if Paramount will release a new version of Days of Thunder some time this year. Possibly to coincide with the dvd/hd-dvd/blu-ray release of MI3. I'm watching this on HBO now and just remembered this badly needs an anamorphic transfer. A kick ass DTS track too!

There is no second disc for MI. MI is a single disc; MI:2 is two discs...old disc is disc 1 and new extras are on disc 2. Funny thing is the runtime for disc 2 is stated as 21 minutes. But I guess not pressing a new disc makes it cheaper than trying to squeeze that additional 21 minutes onto a previous set master.

For a 14.95 list that's not too bad anyway.

$14.95 for both MI & MI:2?

bunkaroo
04-07-06, 10:13 PM
Nope 19.95 for MI 1 separately. I guess they want to cover the cost of the new disc. The list of the 2-pack is 26.95, so basically it's $8 less for the 2-pack. I would guess the 2 pack will be sold on release week for about $18-$20. MI 1 will probably be about $13 and MI 2 $10.

And the MI 2 in the box set is the old disc from the older release, but that it's still anamorphic, correct? Here is the scoop, as I just bought M:I-1 CE ...

Separately:
M:I-1 CE (including ticket) = 1 Disc
M:I-2 = 2 Discs

M:I Collector's Set = M:I-1 CE + M:I-2 = 3 Discs (basically, you include a cardboard sleeve that holds both of the individual releases)

As far as I can tell, there is no "Bonus Disc". There is only the 2nd disc in the M:I-2 set.

Well, after all the research I've done on this title, I still got screwed in the end. I purchased the 3-disc boxed set (though I found out Tarantino was--I'm sure unintentionally--wrong about the Super Bowl TV spot for M:I 3, which is on the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: Special Collector's Edition as an Easter egg) because I couldn't resist the pretty box and can net back the $4 investment in rebuying M:I 2 by selling off my original; however, I neglected to realize that only boxes marked for the free M:I 3 movie ticket feature it, so no ticket for me! This release has become more trouble than it was worth, but oh well, it's over (for better or for worse) now. BUYERS BEWARE!!! Whether you're buying a single title or both in the box, look for the free ticket sticker on the outer case!!!

that doesn't make a whole lotta sense. you as anyone are entitled to the free ticket. ads for it are posted everywhere. you paid 17.99 for two movies and could have paid the same for the two movies and a free ticket to what i believe you will see in M:I-3. now you pay 17.99 + tax + 10.00. that doesn't make sense to short change yourself when everyone else makes out and couldn't be any less sticking it to BB or Paramount when it is there offer.

No EFFING kidding!!! Two or three of the extras are video montages of Tom Cruise's past films and it's nothing but an ego-time warp in regards to the variety of scenes he has done.

I may have been entitled to the ticket, but I'm the one who failed to pay attention and get a set with the "Free Ticket" sticker on it. This isn't a case where my set said it came with a ticket and didn't; it was never marked for a free ticket in the first place, so I'm the one who screwed up. Doesn't anyone have a sense of personal accountability in this day and age?

I've waited years for an anamorphic Mission: Impossible dvd and it's finally here. That's all that matters to me.

This was my only concern. Can't wait to watch the movie in all its glory again.

 I was about to bite the bullet and pick up the non-anamorphic disc on the cheap a few months ago, but decided to wait to see if there would be a re-release to tie-in with MI-3.

A person at the HTF compared both DVDs and the LD; he said the new DVD blows the old DVD's audio away easily and, when equalized for volume, packs exactly the same punch as the LD's legendary track.

I looked at the ad online and it says $12 Bonus Movie Cash "included on-pack to see Mission: Impossible 3 in theaters 5/5/06. Minimum 12 per store.

So technically, that doesn't say "specially marked discs". So if you read it that way and walk into the store and pick out the title that directly relates to this, M:I SE, and there's no ticket, I think you have a legimate reason to want to swap for one that does contain a ticket.

You're splitting hairs, and an easy counter argument can be made that the term "on-pack" refers to the notification sticker, since the actual ticket isn't on the pack but inside one of the DVD's cases...

In all fairness, the effort it may take to go back to the store and wait for an exchange may not be equal to the 10 dollars or whatever it would cost for Filmmaker to just purchase a ticket when the movie is released.

I can't believe this is even an argument :p

I can't believe people are arguing this anyway. I've never seen any bonus that wasn't somehow marked on the packaging (or visible as it was just attached.).

At any rate, I got mine with movie ticket at target today. Great deal for $12.99 when a matinee show around here is $7 and a night show $9.50.

I chose to only get Mission Impossible instead of the 2-movie box set. I closely looked at the special features on MI:2 and there seems to be nothing on that "bonus" disc that justifies a re-purchase. Someone mentioned that Disc 1 is the same as the original release and Disc 2 is about 21 minutes worth of material. The box made it appear like it's 21 minutes of promotional fluff and nothing new to add about the movie. Has anyone checked out MI:2 disc 2 yet?

really?! wow... i was gonna sell off BOTH my original versions of MI 1 & 2 so that i can get the boxed set of the re-release featuring both movies.

in this case, i'll just sell off MI 1 and get the re-release and hang on to my original release of MI2 :)

That's what I was thinking when I read the bonus disc features on MI:2. They appeared identical to the material on MI: 1. Anyways, I bought the new MI:1 at Best Buy for 12.99 minus a 5 dollar reward zone coupon. So I only ended up paying 8.65 after tax for it. Glad I didn't buy the box set for the unneccessary re-purchase of MI:2. Thanks for the input Filmmaker.

Watched Mission Impossible last night and was not impressed at all with the Video or Audio. Audio was so-so, no better than the first release in my opinion, kept checking my sub to see if it was on! Had to soften the picture a bit on my 50 inch plasma to get a pleasing image. Anyone else dissapointed?

DJariya, if you bought the new version of M:I 1 then you have everything--EVERYTHING--featured on the 2nd disc for M:I 2.
i don't understand...the specs for new MI 1 are:
Featurettes:
- Mission: Remarkable – 40 Years Of Creating The Impossible" (11.25)
- Mission: Explosive Exploits (5.08)
- Mission: International Spy Museum (6.30)
- Mission: Spies Among Us (8.40)
- Mission: Catching the Train (2.38)
"Agent Dossiers" - biographies for 7 of the movie’s characters
"Excellence In Film: Cruise" - compilation of clips (9.13)
"Acceptance Speech For BAFTA/LA’s Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award For Excellence In Film" - video clip (3.19)
"Generation: Cruise" - excellence in film montage (3.32)
"Acceptance Speech For MTV’s Generation Award" - video clip (3.41)
Trailers:
- Teaser Trailer
- Theatrical Trailer
- M:I:III Teaser Trailer
- 9 TV Spots

the specs for MI 2 are:

Behind The Mission" featurette (13:52)
"Mission Incredible" featurette (4:58)
"Impossible Shots" featurette (34:07)
Music Video:
- Metallica "I Disappear" (4:22)
Alternate Title Sequence (0:35)
Mission Improbable (MTV Movie Awards Parody) (6:21)

they seem to be entirely different featurettes with different running times. what gives?

Scott, the M:I 2 specs you are listing are on disc one and, yes, are unique to M:I 2, but they are identical to the original 1-disc release of M:I 2 from 5 years ago. The Tom Cruise tribute montages and M:I 3 trailers and TV spots found on the newly created bonus DVD for M:I 2 are what is replicated in full on the new M:I 1 disc. Is everyone square on this yet? There is nothing on the new M:I 2's 2nd disc that isn't found on the new M:I 1 disc and there is nothing on the new M:I 2's 1st disc that isn't found on the original single-disc release of M:I 2 from 5 years ago.

ahhh...i think i got it. but why would they replicate the exact same features on the 2nd disc of M:I-2 that is on M:1-1....unless this new M:I-2 just came out tuesday as well and is there in case someone doesn't want to buy the new M:I-1, so they don't misss out on any new features created for the new M:I-1??
this rationale would suggest buyer: owns old M:I-1 and doesn't want to upgrade and buys new M:I-2 for the upgrade of bonus.

Yeah, it's worth it, that will come out in a few months and could be even more expensive in price than let's say $17 dollars or so. You could always buy MI:3 seperately and hunt down a spare collectors box someplace online. I seriously doubt Paramount will do anything but make the three movies available in a new collectors box.

Was anyone else severely disappointed with the new special features for MI1? I mean omg. How big is Tom Cruise's ego? If it isn't bad enough that every movie of him has cover art that's just a big blowup of his face. Now this. If you watch that tribute montage, you'd think the guy died or something.

I thought the same thing, it was like a tribute thing at the Oscars for an actor who died. I am fully pleased with the picture, sound, and free ticket and it was worth $12.99. The features, for the most part, were filler. I was excited about the featurette on the train scene, but it turned out to be three minutes of nothing.

That had been my plan as well ... but when I found out that I could either pay $12.34 at Walmart for M:I1 or $12.99 for Both new releases at Circuit City, I figured go for both.

I should be able to get at least $1 for my original MI2, therefore doing better than breaking even.

Are you saying CC had the box for $12.99? I know there have been times when the ad was confusing to people so they changed the price, but the ad didn't look confusing at all to me.

I went ahead and got the tupac because it was just $4-5 more. I don't think I liked the sequel that much, but I'll give it another shot. If I don't like it this time, it's no big deal.

Picture and sound were quite good. I hadn't seen this film since probably '97 (on video), and hadn't seen it in widescreen since the theater, so it was fun to re-visit. As for special features, yeah, they were pretty bad (though the information about actual spies was interesting). It was sort of fun to see the "tribute montages" (the virtual exclusion of Legend was funny), but otherwise, poor special features. This was certainly one of the more hollow/"selling you the film you already bought" special editions I've seen in a while.

Yes. All through last week, CC had the Box Set for $12.99 on their website. If you went to purchase it in store, and they told you the price was $17 or $18, all you had to do was mention that it was $12.99 on the CC website. They would check the price and adjust it for you.
