Looking to spend under $300 and get the most bang for my buck. Any ideas?

Links if possible.

If this is already being discussed elsewhere, throw me a link and this thread will be gone lickety split. How do you spell lickety?

TIA.

I ordered a Canon Powershot SD550 7.1MP camera at Dell Home for $314 (MSRP was $450). Dell also has good deals on other Powershot models (such as SD400 for $225). Check out FW for list of deals.

For the SD550, it's $449 - 20% off (automatic) - $45 Dell Elf coupon = $314

You can win a $$ off coupon for electronics and accessories by playing the holiday game at www.dell.com/holiday, and make sure you check 'digital camera' (or electronics?) as the only area of interest when you register for the game, so that you can win a coupon that can be applied on a camera rather some other coupons for PCs, plasma TVs, MP3 players, etc.

Dell Small Business has the Canon SD400 5MP Digital Camera for $249 - $25 off $150 coupon NSRBV7T5Q7$R3C = $224 w/ free shipping. Search for A0550683 to find it. Thanks Hydraridaz.

Another option is to add the 512MB SD Card and apply $50 off $300 coupon ZPT2BGSTH27D6 to get both for $248.

Lowest on Pricegrabber is $250.

Anybody have a feeling on what the best deal there is?

FYI, Circuit City always has everything "on sale", especially digital cameras. I recently bought a SD550, little over your budget, but it was about $400 shipped form NewEgg.

Maybe, but they are discounting their "sale" prices right now. Either way, I'd be interested in knowing what people think is the best deal there right now. In-store pickup this close to X-Mas is preferrable.

I'm guessing you didn't get a better camera?

I am pretty pleased with my ~$150 Canon, if it's a gift you could probably have it in hand within the hour if CC is close to you:

Some $99 digital camcorder.

Sam's Club got my business. Only paid a few extra dollars for the camera (basically tax).

Is this still the camera to get? It is down to $205(black) or $200(silver). There appears to be a next model up, the V550 for $230 [Amazon just increased it :(], but I am not sure what the difference is [Found it, the 550 adds a viewfinder and larger LCD].

My 3.2 MP camera has had a rough year. On Memorial Day weekend, it was dropped in the pool. Then last night (4th of July) it was dropped on the sidewalk, and now the picture button no longer works. I need something new, Labor Day is just around the corner.. ;)

Here is my list:
~5+ MP, although most of my prints are 4X6
Compact, the thing that made my old (Kodak) camera so likely to get dropped is it wouldn't fit into a pocket.
Point and shoot, not overly complicated. My old camera had 3 choices; take pictures, look at pictures, menu.
Decent optical zoom, the more the better (duh)
$300 max, the lower the better (duh again).
Cheap memory
Don't really care about movies

Here are a few others I was looking at, but really have no experience with them.

Canon PowerShot 5.0MP Digital ELPH (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7479917&type=product&productCategoryId=cat04002&id=1125466651464) $284

Casio EXIKIM 6.0MP (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7708732&type=product&productCategoryId=cat04002&id=1138086046836) $237 (now appears SOLD OUT :()

Sony Cyber-shot 7.2MP DSC-P200 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=116669&c=1&cm_re=main%20marquee-_-Web-only:%20save%20up%20to%2012%%20on%20select%20digital%20cameras-_-Sony%20Cyber-shot%C2%AE%20DSC-P200%E2%80%94new%20low%20price!) $190

I am pretty much now torn between the Kodaks and the Sony. Both of these cameras are recommended in this thread. I know Sony cameras have a red push, but I am not terribly worried about that. The Sony does have the regular view-finder that is nice to use, saves on batteries. Kodaks have the dock, so it is super easy to transfer images. How is it with the Sony?

I posted in another thread about a great deal on a Pentax Digital SLR:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=470731

It's more than $300, but at $366 for the camera and the kit lens, this is an awesome deal. (It's actually $466 with a $100 MIR). The Nikon D50 and Canon 350 are (it's closest competitors) are usually $300+ more expensive than this.

I don't know if you want to upgrade to an SLR, because there is a learning curve, but I personally think SLRs are a lot more fun to shoot with and there's the biggest draw.. the interchangable lens... which open lots of possibilities. The beautiful thing about this Pentax is that it will take just about any Pentax lens ever made.

I saw that thread, but I am looking for small point and shoot. It is usually used by the wife. That is also why I am leaning towards the Kodak with the dock, so it has easy downloads that she is familiat with.

Thanks for the response though

Here's a little better price on that V530. It's at J&R. I ordered an Onkyo receiver from them a few days ago, and it's sitting on my porch now. I'm sure it's fine, but that is the only experience from them.
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4053240

I've had good experience w/ ordering speakers from BH photo/video, but their prices are a little bit higher.

My wife has that Kodak Z760 w/ the dock, and it's a breeze to use.

I got the V550 from Staples. It was on clearance for 277, but I got them to PM Abe's of Maine for ~220. Amazon raised it's price back over 300!

The good news is it even works with my old dock, so I have a spare.

Those Kodak V-series cameras are easy to use, stylish, good lcd, nice movie mode, but have TERRIBLE battery life, lack a lot of manual controls, and have lots of noise at higher iso.

The V550 is a solid p&s camera for the beginner, but you are going to need an extra battery or two, and honestly, for the price, there are better options out there.

I don't need a lot of manual options. THis camera is moslty for my wife, who turns it on and presses a button.

I had a DX series before, and the battery was not too terrible. I will keep an eye out for a spare. I liked the fact my old camera could run on standard AA if necessary.
