My prediction: a crapload of noms. for Brokeback Mountain. This is the kind of movie the Golden Globes loves. I also wouldn't be surprised if Walk the Line came in at a close second.

yeah, they seem to be into the smaller, emotionally charged movies. you think there will be any love for the biggie "King Kong"?

I would like to see Reese Witherspoon and Zhang ZiYi get nods...Although Memoirs wasnt he greatest film in the world, I thought she was absolutely stunning as Sayuri, and did a good job with the role, plus well, Im pretty much infatuated with her.

I actuall think Kong might have a better chance at the Oscars than the Golden Globes. The Globes has no technical categories, which is where I am think Kong will sweep.
While a little off topic, whatever happened to the Terrence Malick pic "The New World"? I haven't seen anything about it for a while, and I heard they wanted it to be an awards contender.

The New World is set to come out at the end of the month.
I hope Crash and Cinderella Man don't get forgotten. And Memoirs of Geisha is rotten so I don't see any strong nominations for that one. I also predict Clooney getting an award or two at the Golden Globes because he won't get any at the Oscars.

I really hope they don't select Memoirs of a Geisha over Crash, Capote, Syriana, or A History of Violence. Geisha has gotten horrible buzz and reviews. I think Cinderella Man is a safe pick.

Munich and Kong will be around for the Oscars. The Globes have never meant much of anything. At least the directors got nominated, so not a total snub.
I'm surprised Match Point got the Drama nomination. Johnny Deep nominated for Charlie... was a nice surprise. This guy is just well liked by almost everyone. He'll get the gold one of these days.

I think it'll be there. There's been films before that have been released in the Summer or Spring and have been in contention (Saving Private Ryan, Fargo, Braveheart, etc.)
The Academy loves Ron Howard and Russell Crowe. Plus, they'll want to give Giamatti a Supporting nod to make up for snubbing him last year. Not to mention the fact that the cinematography is terrific.
Universal still has high hopes for this film and they will make sure voters remember it.

I am somewhat surprised but very happy to see The Constant Gardner up for best picture as well as Fernando Mereilles for best direction and Rachel Weisz for supporting actress. It is still my favorite picture of the year, though, that could change this weekend when I will see King Kong and Brokeback Mountain. I just love this time of year.
I'm also excited to see my see sweet Keira Knightley nominated as well.

Yeah, I don't get how "drama about a musician" = musical. Or, while we're at it, how "drama about a comedian" = comedy (Man on the Moon).
Also, Walk the Line is a musical, but Hustle & Flow is a drama? They're both about musicians... albeit one fictional. By the HFPA's logic, Hustle & Flow should be a musical as well.

Why? Releasing a film so it can qualify for awards is snobby, pretentious, and elitist? I would think releasing a film so it wouldn't compete against other big movies out during the holidays is smart business. Plus it helps prevent the film from being lost against other options. And the three week difference is really that significant to you?

At least it qualifies this year, unlike "All the King's Men", which got pushed to '06. Of course, that probably has something to do with the quality of the film, although I was looking forward to seeing it. It looked like an awards type film, especially with that great cast.

Proof is one of my favorite films of the year. But I'm probably one of the only people who saw it.
Paltrow's performance is quite strange but it makes more sense and grows on you as you get into her rhythm and into the style and pace of the film. People will either love (or at least like) or hate the performance. I liked it. Hope Davis's performance is also strange in a totally different way. Intriguing movie.

A surprise, but not a nice one, in my opinion. While his performance was unique and quirky enough to be perfect for Burton's adaptation, I just don't think it was award worthy. I hope he takes home some awards soon. I just hope it's for performances that are deserving.
squid and the whale - comedy ?! hmmm, in my book it's a drama.
I thought it had a lot of dark comedy thrown in the mix. Now, was it enough to warrant the film being labeled a comedy over a drama? Not in my opinion. However, I definitely saw the comedic elements. The movie also would've had a lot stiffer competition in the dramatic categories, so I'm glad it was placed where it was.
with only two nominations for cinderella man, i think it's going to be forgotten come oscar time.
Director: Ron Howard.
Producer: Brian Grazer.
Cast: Russell Crowe, Renee Zelwegger, Paul Giamatti.

Genre: Biopic.
...if the Academy forgets this movie, everything I thought I knew about them has been proven incorrect. If any film has ever been hand-made for a slew of Oscar nominations (save the summer release), this is the one.
Broken Flowers gets shut out? Really surprising, I think the Oscars may know better.

These nominations reflect my feeling about the films released this year. "meh..."
I definitely agree. I love dramatic films, and as such, I usually find that I appreciate award-fodder more than the other films. However, this year has been the exact opposite. This year, I've had much more appreciation for Batman Begins, King Kong, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Sin City, etc. Last year (and in most years before it), my love traditionally went to movies like Eternal Sunshine, Sideways, Hotel Rwanda, Maria Full of Grace, The Motorcycle Diaries, and so forth.

With his win, Phillip Seymour Hoffman now has 16 critic awards to Ledger's 5. He should be in the driver's seat, especially if Capote gets a Best Picture nod. The film has been gaining alot of momentum over the last few weeks.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Supporting choices don't match up. I could still see Oscar going to Giamatti and Michelle Williams.
Remember, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman won Supporting Globes last year and neither one of them got the real gold.

That's not their pick, that's the rules. Movies have to be released in (one/both?) of those markets during a year to be eligible for a nomination.
Be mad at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for this, not Dreamworks.

That's not their pick, that's the rules. Movies have to be released in (one/both?) of those markets during a year to be eligible for a nomination.
Be mad at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for this, not Dreamworks.
what I'm mad about is that Dreamworks should also just give a few other cities the honor of showing the film and not just NYC and LA. Like Warner's had done with Million Dollar Baby release it at the very end of the year in other key market cities.

Did anyone else notice Gwenyth Paltrow's horrid attempt at an english accent? She sounds ridiculous. I wish she would never make another movie.

I think my favorite part of the Globes were these globes:
I may play for the other team, but goddamn. mmmmm
maybe that's why I liked 'The Island' - both her and Ewan

Nothing wrong with being a switch hitter now and then.
Personally, I thought Keira K, Jessica A and Natalie P looked the best!

I love Scarlett a lot, but this Polly Walker chick (who I have never heard of - I don't watch Rome) gave her a run for her money.

if any of you watched the pre show on the E! network (or do some searching on the forum) one of the fashion "experts" got a feel from scarlett and asked many of the women if they were wearing any underwear, or if they were waxed down south.

Yeah, Isaac Mizrahi (sp?). I actually thought E!s presentation before the award show was really good. Much better than crappy Joan Rivers or Star Jones. Thumbs up for Ryan Seacrest and Isaac Mizrahi.

I guess you have never seen Sliding Doors. Not a big fan of her but she nailed it in that movie.
