Identify this movie about telling a kid your santa claus in a bell tower?

Someone mentioned this movie. Had no idea what it was...

Guy commits a crime, possibly a heist. Hides out in a Bell Tower. Some Kid finds him, and the criminal tells the child that He is Santa Claus. In the end the criminal is killed and the kid thinks they killed Santa. it was seen somewhere between 1945-1953.

I've never heard of a film with this plot, or at least one with this as its primary plot. Are you sure this person isn't misremembering or confounding two movies?
