Yes, and one of them is listed incorrectly.

Black and white movies always win for cinematography. It boggles the mind.

5 films in 30 years for the LA Film Critics
1 film in 37 years for the Oscars

Because it's a much bigger challenge than to light for color. If they are equally good, it was harder to achieve B&W film, so I don't mind that tie going to the runner.

And its a shame Schindlers List came out the same year as Clerks, preventing that from winning. Black and White begat Black and White

Interesting, wonder if this is the start of a Brokeback sweep? Good to see History of Violence getting kudos, I really enjoyed that one.

It's weird seeing Heath Ledger make a comeback.

Am I the only one suprised to see William Hurt win for History of Violence? The rest of the film was great but he seemed way too over the top.

I am offended that King Kong is not on the list. :)

Have you seen it?

Because, I'm not so offended. Rather thankful.

CINEMATOGRAPHY: Robert Elswit (Good Night, and Good Luck)

This is great to see.

Elswit never got the credit he deserved for his amazing work on Paul Thomas Anderson's films.

Agreed. Of all the great performances, THAT one got honored? I wouldn't even say his was the best 'supporting actor' performance in that film, both Ed Harris and the son were better IMO.

was history of violence that good?

was history of violence that good?

Not really.

It felt like the standard Hollywood type thriller, just not as insulting.

It was ok, but it didn't really offer anything that I haven't seen before with this type of storyline.

Glad to see History of Violence and Grizzly Man get remembered. I hope HoV doesn't fade away come Oscar time.

I don't think anyone will consider Memoirs of a Geisha as being snubbed, since reviews for the film have been very dissapointing (only 28% so far on RT).

I haven't seen the movie, but was told that he has very little screen time. Was his screen time one of the surprising factors with this award?

Okay, where is Munich and Cinderella Man?

Has Munich been screened by anybody? I haven't seen Good Night & Good Luck yet, but I thought Cinderella Man's cinematography was terrific.

Add The New World to that list.

When is "The New World" expected to open wide?

I don't care when it opens in NYC and LA.

This is an early prediction for best picture nominees:
Brokeback Mountain
Munich
King Kong
Walk the Line
Cinderella Man

Of course, Capote, Good Night & Good Luck, Syriana, and possibly Crash and a few others could sneak in.

I really think Kong will get selected. It's got great buzz and should be a big hit. It's the only big budget title that has any shot.

I think Universal is going to do whatever it can to promote it though. Plus, the dvd release has to help.

They could have 4 of the 5 nominees in Munich, Kong, Brokeback Mountain, and Cinderella Man.

Am I the only one suprised to see William Hurt win for History of Violence? The rest of the film was great but he seemed way too over the top.I've always suspected that Hurt was probably dead-on in his portrayal of a Philadelphia mobster. The problem is that not many of us are familiar with the characteristics of a Philadelphia mobster so we see it as an odd performance.

This guy seems to have liked it:The best acting, however, belongs to William Hurt, whose brief, third-act appearance as a bitter mobster might be the best performance of the year. The scene between him and Tom, in which they finally confront one another in an attempt to clear up the truth, is an absolute revelation, mainly because of Hurt’s mesmerizing performance as a dark, twisted man who has passed the brink of madness years ago. There are few actors better than William Hurt working today, no small thanks to his uncanny ability to be in the constant state of reinventing himself with fresh, offbeat characters. He has never been as absolutely chilling as he is in A History of Violence; his crime boss is a man who cloaks his insanity as successfully as Tom suppresses his seeming natural tendency to extreme violence, and when the two men finally meet and expose each other’s greatest vulnerabilities, the result is one of the best acted scenes that I have seen in a long, long time. To say much more would force me to reveal plot twists that I refuse to give away, but if I had to put my money on a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars, Hurt would most certainly be at the top of the list.http://uashome.alaska.edu/~jndfg20/website/historyofviolence.htm

It's weird seeing Heath Ledger make a comeback.
I remember when Knight's Tale came out and they said he was going to be big and he never quite got there but with Brokeback he is finally arriving and he deserves all the kudos for his work too.
