I wish that Outpost would offer MediaMail shipping for DVDs, considering they carry so many , but their damn distribution system doesn't allow for it.

$7 is a lot, but if you throw the title into DVD Price Search, the next cheapest price is like $50 or something. Maybe this is a re-release, and it's going to be cheaper elsewhere in the near future. Who knows. I didn't look too deeply into it because I really shouldn't order anything for a while.You're telling me.

Yes, many if not most of the prices on Best Buy's website are not the same as what's listed in the table you see within this thread, however, all prices should still reflect the prices in their system in-store. Also, many prices are mislabeled, or rather, not updated to reflect these prices. When I bought my Infinite Ryvius box set, it also said $47.99, but scanned for $23.99. I've purchased a huge chunk of what's listed in that table, and it's never failed me, so don't let the mislabeled prices discourage you if you're interested.

Potentially great news regarding the Columbia House DVD Club. They are now offering ADV titles. The only anime titles that they have right now are the 3 volumes of Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040(Essential Anime). Hopefully they'll keep adding titles-I could use the last 3 volumes of Elfen Lied.:)

Now if they started carrying ADV thinpaks that would change everything...

So you'll end up getting 10 DVDs for around $53($5.30 per DVD). So, the Fruits Basket series would cost around $21 through CH as opposed to $42-$49 at Amazon. If interested, go to the DVD Clubs sub-forum to find out how to maximize the savings at CH.:)

I've done the CH routine about 5-6 times now over the years, including on Fruits Basket. It depends on the coupon, but you can't really get below about $8.00 anymore regardless of how hard you try, since they got rid of the $5 web-only coupon and raised fulfillment prices by a few bucks on everything remotely good (that I don't have yet). If it's your first time, you might still find some $19.99 fulfillments, though.

It's $3 for the first 6 enrollments. $14.99 for the 7th. Then fulfillment is ~$26 each after s/h + tax. So you're looking at a total of $70 for 9, not $53 for 10. That's about $8/dvd. You could also exploit the periodic "free shipping with 3 titles" offer, and get 10 titles for $75, knocking it down to a BARE minimum of $7.50 (or $7 if you can find any $20 fulfillments -> $2-3 less after s/h).

At $8.20/dvd, Fruits Basket was $33 (the price at which I bought it from CH). Then I ordered the bare artbox from Rightstuf.com for $9.99. So the total came out to $43 -- the exact same price as the original Amazon deal. Thus, after taking into consideration all the hassle, the original Amazon price was clearly the best deal. At $50, it really depends on how frugal you are :)

(A side note, they had Wizard of Oz Definitive Collection mispriced last week for about the same price as a fulfillment. The $30+ set came out to about $8.20. Keep an eye out for mispriced box-set fulfillments.)

I don't want to derail this thread into a CH discussion(there's a whole subforum for that), but I want to address a few points made by Gamelore.

1. Use code LMT for enrollment and the deal is as follows-
6 for $0.49 each($2.94), take a 7th title for $9.95. Free shipping on all 7 titles and you have to buy 2 more in the next 2 years. The total for the enrollment package would be $12.89 plus whatever your state sales tax may be.
2. The $5 off of your first online order of $30 or more is still active-

3. If you're patient, they will offer you free shipping on 3 or more titles and will even offer a buy 1 get 1 free deal. Generally, it will cost you around $45.88 plus tax to fulfill(2 $19.95 titles-preorders are always $19.95, 1 title at 50% off to qualify for free shipping-$10.98, deduct the $5 off web coupon for a total of $45.88 plus tax). Though I had used them in the past, I do not count the web coupons after the huge ordeal I went through last time I used one. The last time I used a web coupon, they refused to count my entire order as "regular price" making them all disqualified as fulfillments. Not even a single item. I spent about 45 minutes arguing for them to count ONE of the items as regular price very aggressively. Frankly, I almost wanted to cry because they were so mean to me :(. Then I had to call them 3 more times because they somehow screwed up the first time I called. That's why I won't use a coupon on the fulfillments -- ended up costing me much more than it saved me. If you are saying it still works, then maybe the CSR and manager both didn't know their own policy...

That is a good code though, and I didn't know about a B1G1 w/ free shipping. Hoping for a B1G1 w/ free shipping would come to $5.62/dvd for the ultimate deal for me ($61.8/11), after tax. But since I've never seen it, I just assume the occasional free shipping on 3+ is the lowest it can go.

As for anime, I've bought Princess Mononoke, Memories, Millennium Actress, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Angel Sanctuary, 4x Fruits Basket, and Wrath of the Ninja through them. I wish I had used it on Metropolis. :)

Sorry to hear about your trouble with CH. They can sometimes be a pain in the ass, but I find that it's worth the trouble to get $5 DVDs.:) The next time that you encounter a problem with them, try e-mailing them directly at dvd@columbiahouse.com . The online contact form is a waste of time because they only send back canned replies. Calling isn't good because it all depends on which CSR you get and what mood they are in and there's no record of a call like there is with e-mail. Also, not to sound politically incorrect, but I can hardly ever understand the CSR's broken Engilsh. I've always had great success getting problems resolved by e-mailing them directly.:)

Does anyone here watch Samurai 7? Being discounted I was considering getting it. I'm usually not a huge fan of giant robot anime.. I enjoy more character pieces with action, like Bebop or Trigun or Berserk.

I get charged tax (CA) also, so I had my friend in VA order a Saikano set for me and him. Shipping to VA is about 20% cheaper on top of it. Saved at least $7 between the two of us after he ships me mine.

I already have Saikano, but I paid $80 for my singles. I couldn't pass up this $20 set, laughing at me. Is it really non-anamorphic letterbox? While that is a disappointment, the singles were no less than gorgeous!

I won't laugh at you. I might double dip on the $20 set as well, considering that the new set has some brand new extras.

I believe that the R2J release is also letterboxed. In all likelihood, VIZ didn't get a better source than the R2 to begin with :)

If you want to save on the shipping charges at Outpost and have a Fry's Electronics store in your city, the SAIKANO deal is also good instore. The store in City of Industry, CA had four copies of the set and they were all stickered at $19.99. Also, Fry's has LOVE HINA Vol. 6 for $6.99, which is not reflected on the Outpost website.

Yeah, the City of Industry store had multiple copies of LOVE HINA 6. I think there were a couple on the shelf in the anime section, but they also have a small box by the wall filled with $6.99 anime sale titles (mostly ARGENTOSOMA, .HACK//SIGN, GENESHAFT, etc.) that had at least four copies of LOVE HINA 6.

One thing about the City of Industry Fry's is that they have most of their anime boxsets bunched together with the documentary DVDs on a shelf that is separate from the rest of the DVD section. So, if you're looking for the anime boxsets, you have to sort of stray away from the main DVD section.

Okay, so after I passed my defense, I drove out to City of Industry Fry's. They had 0 Saikano box sets in stock, but there is 1 left in Burbank, toogood. I did, however, pick up Love Hina 6 (there were still 4 left), and Junkers Come Here for $6.99. :)

edit: Woot! The 12 days of Christmas sale started today w/ Inu Yasha Season 1 $49.99. Glad they are doing it again this year. I bought 3 of the 12 offers last year :)

New lowest price on Revolutionary Girl Utena: Rose Collection, however, it shows up as a pre-release (Feb. '06), which probably means it'll pop up cheaper elsewhere before too long. Just thought I'd throw it up there for those who might be interested for the time being.

Was at Best Buy last night and saw that they had put out some "anime gift pack" that consists of ten DVDs for $39.99. These were mostly the same Bandai titles that were available for $3.99 apiece at Big Lots. The pack that I saw included:

The individual DVDs were not shrinkwrapped and they all were packed together in loose-fitting plastic that looked like it was taped at the bottom.

I saw the same $39.99 set at BB too (anime holiday gift pack or something like that). No individual shrinkwrap on the 10 DVDs and their UPCs are marked by a permanet marker. The band that holds the DVDs together has the Bandai logo on it, which leads me to think that this is an exclusive set repackaged for Best Buy in order to get rid of their excessive inventory :p

I'm surprised you found it dull. I do think certain aspects didn't fit with what we consider to be contemporary Japanese horror (I think you noted the lack of spine-tingling terror in your review). But actually it does qualify at least in part. While I grant you there aren't any absolutely terrifying moments in the piece, it does qualify in the horrific revelation there is no justification and no escape from the evil preying on the characters. A staple of Western horror is that the protagonist somehow manages to exorcise the demon, put the evil spirits to rest, destroy the monster, and that those tormented by this force of evil where likely justifiably so. This isn't necessarily so in Japanese horror, and in this case, KakuRenBo certainly qualifies. I found the final moments of the film to be very horrifiying, not because of shocking visuals, but for the realization of just what is going on (combined with the essence of the inescapable evil). I also found the usage and updating of Japanese folklore to be a very nice touch, particularly as it helps keep the piece true to its cultural origins.

But I guess that's why it's good to consider multiple perspectives. We can each see something different.
