What does up to 40% off mean though? What will be the discount on DVD's?

anyone used these before? Curious if they care if you really are a friend/family member (probably not), but more curious about the "Select" merchandise and "up to 40%" wording...is it only on select titles?

According to a post at CAG, here's the text of the email:

Here's what you will save if you make a purchse in store on 12/2/05:
40% off regular price for all Music, Video, DVD, Storage, Boutique, Blank Tape and Maintenance products
30% off regular price for all Used product
30% off regular price for select Electronics
20% off regular price for all Video Game Software
Video game hardware, concert tickets, gift cards, iPods and Backstage Pass memberships are excluded from this extra discount. These discounts apply to regular price. The Backstage Pass discount can not be used in combination with this discount.

I'm assuming that UP TO 40% refers to the fact that some items receive a lower discount.

If it were combinable with rebates/sale prices(rebates are mostly on things that are on sale) this would be a scorching hot deal, but 40% off regular prices(which are mostly list prices) isn't that great. Also, given the ymmv nature of FYE stores, it may work at some places and not at others. I may give it a try to see if I can get 40% off some of the new releases with rebates, but given my prior experiences in the stores, I'm not holding my breath. Still thanks to the OP for posting this!

40% off ridiculously high retail may not be such a great deal on dvds, but for music cds it may just be worth it in some cases, especially for stuff that's been out for a long time and never goes on sale.

Well crap, I was hoping to pick up the Buffy Chosen Collection with this coupon, but alas none of my local stores has it. I didn't decide I wanted it until this week, so I missed out on the DDD sale.

I'm a manager at an fye up here in VT. Just a heads up for those that try to use this coupon. They were distributed within the company to the employees. When you go to a store, they may ask you who gave you the coupon and what store they work at etc. We received an email at work the other day that may require anyone who presents the coupon to provide a valid employee number. Not trying to discourage anyone though. 30% off of the used DVD's and used video games is pretty decent. Good luck!

Question: How is a friend of the employee going to know the valid employee number? It's not something one asks when they're handed a coupon.

I'm a manager of an FYE in Johnstown, PA. Our DM said, we would have to have the employee number in order to give the discount. As Itrain said, that's not to say that somebody at another store who isn't totally following the rules won't give it to you, but this was meant for employees and their families & friends. It is a good discount on certain things though. TV boxed sets are what I'm going for. If only 24 Season 4 had come out 1 week earlier.

The employee is supposed to write it on the back of the coupon. Which is why it's puzzling me why this ended up on the internet.

I am sure no one would be kind enough to help us out with an employee number? Would be the perfect xmas gift for us all ;)

Or better yet, how about post the employee number of your a-hole boss, so that he gets any grief that may come.

correct me if I'm wrong FYE guys, but isn't it just a social? If so, they just put it in with the transaction. The only thing you need to know is if it's a full social or the last four digits. I don't know of any company that has an actual national database built into their system ie you don't have to have a "real" social like with Barnes and Nobles, Booksamillion, etc. unless you work at a location in the local mall where someone would know you. Sooooo, do they use socials as their employee numbers? :)

If they do, they are just itching to get sued.

LOL, I've worked for four retailers, and they all used socials as their employee numbers. I honestly don't know of a company that doesn't. Usually it's just the last four digits so they can't get sued, but Barnes and Noble and a few others use the entire number. :)

big financial firms definitely don't use SS#'s for Employee ID's.

Colleges use your SS# has your Student # though.

Has anyone tried to use the coupon today to any degree of success?

To answer some of the above questions:

We used to use SS#'s for our employee numbers, but they changed that recently when we got new computer systems. Now it's a random 5 digit number that I think depends on your store location.

You've got nothing to lose by at least attempting to use the coupon, but I wouldn't go way out of your way if you don't have a Transworld store near you, just in case the number is required. Knowing our company, half the stores don't pay attention to such details coming down from the home office so you may get lucky.

You could probably just make up a five digit number and it would most likely work in the system, but I'm not 100% sure about that. (Mine begins with a 1)

Not in Washington any more (I work at a college). We used to use SSNs, but we got in trouble for it.

I lucked out and found a friendly cashier who put her own employee number on mine. Managed to score the Monster Legacy Collection box set (with busts), the Michael Moore DVD Collector's Set, Porco Rosso and Samuari Champloo Vol. 4 on a nice discount.
