Crimson Tide: Unrated Extended Edition ----> 5/16/06 (merged)

Well, we all know that this was supposed to be released back in May, and it was delayed for who knows what reason, so is there been any word on a new release date for this title?

I ask because I finally got around to watching the second half of the Das Boot mini-series, and it got my submarine movie mojo movin' again.

I've been holding out for this one too. The old release being on sale this wk at BB is mighty tempting...

Hopefully we will get an SE of this eventually. It's been announced and delayed too many times already.

As previously mentioned, Crimson Tide being on sale at Best Buy is mighty tempting; special edition on the way or not.

I've been waiting for word on this SE as well as the Enemy Of The State SE. They're two of my favorite Tony Scott movies (especially Crimson Tide) but if those SEs don't get a date announced soon, I'm just going to cave and get the current versions of them. I'd gladly double dip for both anyway.

To this point, I hadn't heard anything of a Enemy of the State SE. I'd be stoked for that one; I've watched the current disc hundreds of times.

edit: okay, okay...I've watched it dozens of times

I will wait and not cave in. Anamorphic is a big deal to me.

I'll wait. I've waited this long, what's another 6-24 months? I waited a hell of a long time for the Goodfellas SE, I can wait for this (and Enemy of the State).

HA!

You assume you'll get it!

Ransom wasn't and it was a touchtone SE re-release.

Even though I don't have a WS TV, I still make sure to buy everything in anamorphic WS. (I have 16:9 enhanced mode). The extra resolution makes a big difference.

Edit: Yippee!! This post made me a "DVD Talk Special Edition"!!

Same here, and down the road when you do upgrade you'll be all set.

Congrats on making DVD Talk SE

I've had the CT-SE for more than a year... the R2, that is.

I have no worries about the format. Comparing a re-release of Ransom and Crimson Tide is a hilarious stretch.

Damn! That's right. I need to purchase the regular non-anamorphic version so that they can announce the anamorphic SE the following week.

I forgot how these things work....

Would the release of the Man On Fire SE increase the odds of seeing the SEs of Crimson Tide and Enemy Of The State?

When Man On Fire came out theatrically, I remember a post at the Digital Bits stating that the release of the Crimson Tide and Enemy Of The State SEs might happen when Man On Fire hit DVD. The announcement of the delay on those titles came soon after.

Now with a more comprehensive version of Man On Fire reportedly coming out in January, could it be at all possible the special editions will hit then?

Where did THAT rumor come from?

I got CT from the BB sale. Watched it last night for the first time on my 57" WS Tosh, using a Zenith DVB318 "upconverting" DVD player (it upconverts to 1080i signal). Because my TV locks into full stretched mode when it gets an HD signal, I always have to use the DVD player's "zoom" mode to vertically stretch non-anamorphic WS content. Not too big a deal, but the resolution is very bad, even when upconverted (my gf even noticed).

Anyway, the most annoying thing kept happening during the movie. For like the first 5 or 6 chapters, every time it went to a new chapter, the DVD player would "reset" its zoom mode back to normal, which meant it's a "squished" picture. I'd have to manually re-zoom it, and continually had to "eyeball" the amount of zoom necessary. It didn't happen again until the last chapter before the credits. I don't know whether it was a bug with the DVD player, or something about the disc that caused it. We have watched a few other non-anamorphic ws flicks in the same way, but they always stayed zoomed properly.

Has anyone else noticed this problem? I guess it's a pretty specific situation, which would only apply to Zenith DVB318 users watching on a WS set.

Otherwise, great movie!

Funny you should bring this up. I just watched this last weekend (I also watched The Firm, too, must have been in a Gene Hackman mood). Great film, good audio, but unfortunately that non-anamorphic transfer is not that great. Really looking forward to hearing about the new edition.

Oh, so that's who's in that movie - thank God for head-shots!
