Well, we all know that this was supposed to be released back in May, and it was delayed for who knows what reason, so is there been any word on a new release date for this title?

I ask because I finally got around to watching the second half of the Das Boot mini-series, and it got my submarine movie mojo movin' again.

I've been holding out for this one too. The old release being on sale this wk at BB is mighty tempting...

As previously mentioned, Crimson Tide being on sale at Best Buy is mighty tempting; special edition on the way or not.

I've been waiting for word on this SE as well as the Enemy Of The State SE. They're two of my favorite Tony Scott movies (especially Crimson Tide) but if those SEs don't get a date announced soon, I'm just going to cave and get the current versions of them. I'd gladly double dip for both anyway.

To this point, I hadn't heard anything of a Enemy of the State SE. I'd be stoked for that one; I've watched the current disc hundreds of times.

edit: okay, okay...I've watched it dozens of times ;)

I'll wait. I've waited this long, what's another 6-24 months? I waited a hell of a long time for the Goodfellas SE, I can wait for this (and Enemy of the State).

Ransom wasn't and it was a touchtone SE re-release.

Even though I don't have a WS TV, I still make sure to buy everything in anamorphic WS. (I have 16:9 enhanced mode). The extra resolution makes a big difference.

Edit: Yippee!! This post made me a "DVD Talk Special Edition"!!

Would the release of the Man On Fire SE increase the odds of seeing the SEs of Crimson Tide and Enemy Of The State?

When Man On Fire came out theatrically, I remember a post at the Digital Bits stating that the release of the Crimson Tide and Enemy Of The State SEs might happen when Man On Fire hit DVD. The announcement of the delay on those titles came soon after.

Now with a more comprehensive version of Man On Fire reportedly coming out in January, could it be at all possible the special editions will hit then?

I got CT from the BB sale. Watched it last night for the first time on my 57" WS Tosh, using a Zenith DVB318 "upconverting" DVD player (it upconverts to 1080i signal). Because my TV locks into full stretched mode when it gets an HD signal, I always have to use the DVD player's "zoom" mode to vertically stretch non-anamorphic WS content. Not too big a deal, but the resolution is very bad, even when upconverted (my gf even noticed).

Anyway, the most annoying thing kept happening during the movie. For like the first 5 or 6 chapters, every time it went to a new chapter, the DVD player would "reset" its zoom mode back to normal, which meant it's a "squished" picture. I'd have to manually re-zoom it, and continually had to "eyeball" the amount of zoom necessary. It didn't happen again until the last chapter before the credits. I don't know whether it was a bug with the DVD player, or something about the disc that caused it. We have watched a few other non-anamorphic ws flicks in the same way, but they always stayed zoomed properly.

Has anyone else noticed this problem? I guess it's a pretty specific situation, which would only apply to Zenith DVB318 users watching on a WS set.

Otherwise, great movie!

Funny you should bring this up. I just watched this last weekend (I also watched The Firm, too, must have been in a Gene Hackman mood). Great film, good audio, but unfortunately that non-anamorphic transfer is not that great. Really looking forward to hearing about the new edition.

Looks like a March 14th release date. Disney's live-action depts have got to be the slowest at releasing SE's... C'mon guys pick up the pace, esp on the Scott brothers' movies.

Well, i guess i'm just hoping that they're not going to rehash what's been released in other regions for years. Obviously the "extended edition" is different because no one else has had that before. Wasn't there a rumor that Tony Scott had recorded a commentary years ago?

Been waiting for this a long time. Refuse to buy non-anamorphic discs. (Sole exception being Scream, but only because it's part of the boxed set.) Won't be surprised if they give us an extended cut, too. Hope it's worth it; I totally dig Enemy of the State in its theatrical incarnation.

My uncle was in the Navy and served as chief of the boat on a Sub. They wouldn't let the guys watch Crimson Tide while they were at sea. Das Boot and the Hunt for Red October were fine, but no Crimson Tide - he was on a fast attack and not a boomer.

I'm sure he has.

About the Turn into the torpedo trick in the Hunt for Red October... he said you could do it but it "would take a big pair of gonads." He also said that when they showed the USS dallas doing an emergency blow, the sub that they showed wasn't Los Angeles Class but another kind. Soe six pack doesn't know the difference I suppose.

Does anyone have a clue as to why Amazon has all 3 of Crimson Tide (Unrated), Con Air (Unrated), and Enemy of the State (Unrated) selling for 100% full MSRP of $19.99? I can't believe they would get many buyers at that price...

Checked out Touchstones website and through their DVD section, it still shows Crimson Tide and Con Air for 5/16. Didnt see this yet unless I missed it but Con Air is now 122 mins (7 mins longer) and Crimson Tide is now 123 mins (also 7 mins longer) at least according to their website. Crimson Tide features listed were • Deleted Scenes Not Shown In Theaters • All Access: "On The Set Of CRIMSON TIDE" Featurette • "The Making Of CRIMSON TIDE" Featurette and nothing for Con Air. Seems fishy that nothing has really been said yet nor a press release.

Also, did the cover change or does that site have an old version?

Just watched bits from all discs. First of, all featurettes are vintage ( no surprise really), the pictures are not digitally remastered, in Con Air the fight in the aircraft graveyard has alot of speckles. Anybody else hope somebody streets these early (CT, EOTS, CA), though the sale price may not apply at all stores. I have some extra pocket change I can blow on these right now. So, I am hoping.......

Con AIr review up.... http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=21651

(Extended version "spoilers" may be found in the following ramble:)

Early in the flick, Poe's eventual attacker says something snide about his lovely Tricia -- something nastier than in the theatrical cut. There's also a glimpse of Poe getting arrested that wasn't there before, as well as a sequence in which Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson) rescues Poe from a burning cell during a prison riot. There are some tweaks made to Dave Chappelle's dialogue, and a little extra back-story on how Poe once killed a prison bully called "The Giant." Danny Trejo gets to deliver an extra dose of rapist ugliness, and there's also a semi-pointless conversation between Cusack's & Featherstone's characters. Colm Meaney gets an extra moment to ruminate over the death of his DEA agent, Cage shares a few extra words with prison guard Bishop, Garland (Buscemi) gets to kill a guard (off-camera, but unexpected!), and Bishop shares a quick exchange with con-pilot Swamp Thing. There's also a moment of looting when the cons land at Lerner Field, and a good deal of extra interplay between Poe and his buddy Baby-O.

The theatrical cut of Con Air runs 115 minutes; this one goes for 122.

I find it odd that Enemy Of The State does not mention being unrated and extended except for the sticker all three have. Con Air and Crimson Tide mention in on their own packaging as well as the sticker. The runtime does show as 8 minutes longer.

It was funny to see the old cover for the 98 dvd. I forgot about those horrid purple wide screen banners these films had on them. Now if they would only re-release Deep Rising in 16x9 or even uncut! Damn you Buena Vista.

I read somewhere that Tony Scott supposedly recorded an audio commentary for Crimson Tide. Was there any truth to that rumor? I wonder why it wasn't included on this set.

HTF.

And that was a while ago. Years ago I think.

it's really too bad Buena Vista Home Video isn't consistant with it's inclusion of DTS audio - DTS for 'Chronicles of Narnia', yet not for 'Crimson Tide' (even the theatrical cut for it's laserdisc release had a stellar DTS track)... oh well.

DTS can be found in other regions. Unfortunately, without a 16x9 transfer.

I was on the fence about ConAir, but I passed...it's just too silly for me. I did pick up unrated copies of EoS and CT.

Con Air was silly, but it was a fun action movie to watch, I liked it. I decided to purchased all three DVDs today.

can you believe that the contents of this disc have been out for YEARS in other regions. I just popped the DVD in the player and it's even got the same friggin animated menu.

I wonder how long they were sitting on this.
