Upconverting question

I noticed the latest version of Sony's 400 disc player has the HDMI connection. I have a lot of DVD-Rs I've recorded from analog vhs and cable. Will these look worse through the HDMI? Expose the quality flaws more? I'm considering getting this player. Should I also hook up the component cable and if watching a disc from analog source switch to that input or will everything look better through the HDMI?

The difference will likely not be that dramatic, but the HDMI connection may expose more flaws in the low-quality source. I would just resign myself to the fact that compressed DVD-Rs recorded from analog cable are always going to look like crap on any large screen and just live with it.
