hey guys,

i hoping this is the best forum to post in.

i have a friend who is really into his hockey. so for a christmas gift i want to get some sort of hockey dvd for him. maybe something like a highlights dvd which would have the top 100 goals ever, or maybe the best stanley cup finals ever. or maybe the last 10 stanley cup finals. something like that.

does anyone own any good hockey dvds, or can recommend any?

i'm all the way in new zealand, so hockey isn't that popular here, so hockey dvds aren't readily available in stores. so i'll need to get them from amazon or something like that.

thanks, any help is appreciated.
Tom

Exactly. Nothing else like it. Get him a few of these and he'll be happy. I think there's 10+ volumes by now...don't know how many of them are on DVD, though. Should be a bunch.

Other than that, if he has a specific favorite team, you can check their website...sometimes teams have dvds that they put out.

Here are the hockey DVDs that I own, and I really enjoyed each of them:

Legends of Hockey: Seasons 1 & 2 (Highly Recommended)
It's Our Game: World Cup of Hockey 2004
NHL - Heritage Classic - A November to Remember
Ultimate Gretzky

I've got a few more on my wishlist as well, but the above is a good starting point. The Legends of Hockey series is best suited for hockey hardcore fans, who want to learn or watch a large portion of the overall history of the sport. It aired on ESPN in the States a few years back, and it's basically hockey's version of Ken Burns' Baseball.

You can pick up a new Mario Lemieux DVD off eBay. It was a stadium give-away this year, so you can't buy it in stores. If you are a fan, or at least appreciate one of the greatest players ever, it is a good DVD.

Don Cherry series is at 17 volumes right now. I have all 17 :) However, I think only from 11-17 are available on dvd.

Ultimate Gretzky is really good.

You can get the 1972 Summit Series on dvd. It has all 8 games in their entirety. That was a brutal series, totally awesome though.

One of my favourites that I own is a Detroit Redwings dvd. Takes you through the history, in details of their last 3 cup wins, and top 5 games in their entirety picked by the fans. This was a very cool idea. Before the dvd came out, the Redwings Website had about 20 games that fans could select the top 5 that they would like to see on the dvd and they put them on it.

I wouldn't mind getting that set sometime just to have a dvd copy of game 3 of the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals. It was the best sporting event I have ever attended in person (8th row behind the Canes bench on the blue line!) but on the other hand I can still see Bret Hull scoring that goal to send it to OT and I'm not sure I want to relive it again ;)

As for other hockey dvd's, they announced a Messier two disc set (similar to Ultimate Gretzky I assumed) for release in Nov. 2004 but once the lockout began it was delayed/cancelled. Amazon still lists the release date as 2010, so who knows if it will ever be released. I would love to see a "Ultimate Lemieux" set, as well as a Penguins set similar to the Red Wings.
