View Full Version : R.E.M.: IRS titles reissued-2CD Deluxe Editions

R.E.M. will have several IRS titles reissued in the second quarter next year. When you get this far out, date-wise, it's always best to tuck the dates away in the back of your mind until they become conclusive. When they do, we'll be here to assure you. But for now, expect a Deluxe 2CD reissue of Document, Deluxe Edition of Fables of the Reconstruction, the DVD reissue of Film Stock - The Complete DVD, and a Deluxe 2CD reissue of Life's Rich Pageant. Not too far after that, there is And I Feel Fine:The Best of R.E.M. (CD/DVD).

I actually stumbled across the reissue of Document in a local record store this weekend. It was a dual disc...is this part of the above mentioned reissue series?

I considered picking it up, but I heard nothing about it; but a 5.1 mix of Document (advertised on the sticker) sounds cool.

Great news. I'll be picking up all of these save the GH.

Hopefully we get more info soon.

In the way that I am wrong and you are right :)

The biq question is what will be on the second discs?

If they are anything like the dreck they stuck on the recent Cure re-release deluxe editions, then I will be taking a major pass on these.

That was probably the DVD-Audio version of the album, not a dualdisc. It's worth picking up if you like Document. It's a nice mix and is definitely the best I've ever heard the album sound.

I'd like the see these follow the same formula as the Warner reissues, but if there are some rarities I haven't heard yet I'd like to hear those as well. Actually, now that I think of it, I'd like to see them trump the Warner discs by remastering the CD version of the album as well. It's hard to tell from that blurb what they plan on doing, though.

No, it was definately DualDisc--there was a sticker on the front. Actually, it's listed on the store's site (http://www.vvinyl.com), if you search the term "DOCUMENT (DUALDISC)".

Aside from the 5.1 mix, the only other detail I remember is the mention of videos for the album's singles.

Cool, you're right. Here's Amazon's page:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000AQACO8/104-0544552-2401552?v=glance

Looks like it just came out. The DVD-A had the same three videos as the Dualdisc, so it's probably the exact same content (which is good for me, since I won't have to rebuy it). I paid $20-something and thought it was worth it, so I'd definitely reccomend the Dualdisc.

Ooh, I've got the Mobile Fidelity release of Murmur, but I've never been able to find a copy of Reckoning that I could afford. Maybe I'll contact an Ebay seller and offer to trade my vinyl, cassette and CD copies of reckoning for the MoFi one. (The Barter-it-Now price?)

Hopefully both of ours will be obsolete soon.

Also on August 29 are three R.E.M. issues. They all bear the same title, And I Feel Fine: Best of IRS Years, but will come at you in several formats. The first two formats are CD and DualDisc, with the third issue a DVD called And I Feel Fine: The Videos.

It's really almost unbelievable how good these songs are. I actually would prefer disc 1 or disc 2 to the actual greatest hits cd. And there are many, many more songs from the IRS period that aren't on this release and I can't wait to get them all remastered.

I would put REM's songs from this era up against any other band in my lifetime. I don't think anyone else comes close.

Disturbance At The Heron House is my favorite REM song and I'm bummed that I'll never get to see them do it live. I was hoping that they would release more than 1 concert from their last tour when they were taking fan requests and finally playing a lot of their old stuff again.

I would pay anything to see them do a concert with only the older songs. Everything before "Green."

Totally agree with you. I can't believe there's still people out there that discount this era and think middle period REM (Green to Monster) is their prime.

It's akin to believing the Stones hit their peak in the 80's.

This is the very best that I could do in picking my favorites BEFORE Green. I think of everyone of these as great songs and there are arguably several other songs from this era that are just as great. You might argue these albums were close to perfect. Who else in the last 25 years has done anything better? I can't think of anyone even close. And then you have all of their stuff from Green to the present. And I think their stuff all the way through Hi-Fi was pretty terrific, with Automatic For The People being my favorite album since they left IRS.

There are a lot of R.E.M. fans (like me) who got their first CD player around the time Monster came out. Monster was actually the first CD I ever bought (at 14). For that reason, the early Warner days were when I began listening to R.E.M. and I remember when I first listened to a tape (yes, a tape) of Green and thinking it was incredible. As I got older, I began listening to stuff from the IRS years. My first impression was still the early Warner stuff, so that's where my taste was formed. However, I haven't really gotten into any of their stuff since Up.

It likely never will be, since remastering these days means "compress it all to hell in order to make it loud", which makes it awful to listen to (not that anybody used to listening to music on iPods, MP3s, and radio could tell). MoFi did it right.

DVD extras include rare interview footage and acoustic performances.

On September 12th, EMI will release the first comprehensive CD and DVD anthologies of R.E.M.'s 1980s I.R.S. Records catalog. The CD will be called And I Feel Fine…The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 and will be available in 2 formats: a 21-track single-disc collection of hits and band/fan favorites and a 2-CD Collector's Edition with a
second 21-track disc of rarities including alternate takes, demos, previously unreleased songs, mixes, and live recordings of classic R.E.M. The DVD, When the Light Is Mine The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 Video Collection, includes the music videos from Chronic Town through Document, as well as live television performances and James Herbert’s short film, Left of Reckoning. DVD extras feature early interviews and rare acoustic performances.

Bertis Downs had the following to say about the upcoming release: "This will be a noteworthy package of R.E.M.’s early years, which a lot of people don’t know very well. The guys themselves picked the songs to be included and sequenced the records, had some fun with the liner notes, and Michael and Chris coordinated on a lot of key aspects of the package (actually all key aspects of the package). As for “Why Now?” Well, for one thing, there has never been a real great retrospective of the 5 year/5 album period of R.E.M.’s history known as the I.R.S. years. For another, after 25 years (or 26 but who’s counting?), a recognition of the specialness of these recordings seemed a fine and appropriate thing, and we figured if the band and HQ staff here in Athens had some input, the world would end up with a package that truly has “something for everybody.” ...

Early Rarities, Live Clips Highlight R.E.M. CD/DVD

R.E.M.'s pre-major label stint on I.R.S. Records will be anthologized on two CDs and a DVD due Sept. 12 via EMI Catalog Music Marketing. "And I Feel Fine" will be available as both a single-disc CD package and a double-disc set with a host of rarities, live cuts and previously unreleased selections. The DVD, "When the Light Is Mine," features a mix of music videos and live TV performances.

As expected, the single-disc version of "And I Feel Fine" includes the finest tracks from R.E.M.'s first five years, from "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" and "Radio Free Europe" to "Driver 8," "Sitting Still" and "Begin the Begin." The set appropriately closes with "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," from 1987's "Document," the band's final I.R.S. album before inking with Warner Bros.

But it's the two-disc edition of the collection that will prove a bounty for R.E.M. collectors, as it includes the first authorized release of the studio outtakes "Theme From Two Steps Onward" and "Bad Day." The former has circulated on bootlegs for years, while the latter was originally recorded during the sessions for 1986's "Life's Rich Pageant." It was revived and re-recorded for inclusion on R.E.M.'s 2003 retrospective "In Time -- The Best of R.E.M."

Other nuggets include an early 1980s version of "All the Right Friends" (which was re-recorded for the 2001 soundtrack to "Vanilla Sky), demos of "Hyena" and the early live favorite "Mystery to Me," a "live in the studio" version of "Just a Touch" and live takes of "Ages of You," "We Walk" and "1,000,000" taped July 13, 1983 at Boston's Paradise.

"When the Light Is Mine" is highlighted by performances from the U.K. TV show "The Tube" of "Talk About the Passion," "Radio Free Europe" and "Can't Get There From Here" (featuring a blonde Michael Stipe), a 20-minute film titled "Left of Reckoning" and a 1984 performance of "Pretty Persuasion" from "The Old Grey Whistle Test." The label promises "rare interview footage and acoustic performances" but details of these features have yet to be announced.

According to R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs, original R.E.M. members Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry were heavily involved in crafting the upcoming releases, including selecting their favorite studio tracks for the two-disc edition of "And I Feel Fine."

"This is a good history lesson on the days of yore when the band first started out and were writing sometimes 2-3 songs a day, many of which became classics, and some of which were lost in the mists of tape and time and vault," he says.

To coincide with the releases, R.E.M. will be induced into Georgia Music Hall of Fame on Sept. 16 in Atlanta.

Wonder if the DVD has 5.1 remixes like the Warner best of set does?

Just hopped on this too after seeing it posted on the Murmurs.com forum. Mine says it's not expected to ship until Sept 25th, though. Hopefully it will be shipped much, much sooner. Execellent deal though, regardless.

I love the 2 disc cd, but I just don't get why bands think we'd rather have several versions of 1 song (regular, outtake, demo, hib-tone, live) and leave off songs like Catapult, Carnival of Sorts (box cars), Wolvers, Lower, etc...

If you want to release live versions and demos, then put out a 3rd disc.

They HAD BETTER re-lease everything, not just a few of their IRS albums.

I had to buy this at BB for the 2 extra songs and 1 video. But the 2 songs were already on the CD, these were just different versions of those songs.

The best news was the one of them is my favorite REM song, Disturbance At The Heron House.

Same here...I ordered them both and got the 9/25 ship date for the DVD. But, after initially deducting the $16.99, it looks like it's now indicating that I will be charged that price. The two-CD has shipped already (I have Amazon Prime); the DVD is "shipping soon" but not expected until 9/25.

Personally, I don't care if they bill me for the DVD, but I do expect that they will at least deduct the $2.00 off I was supposed to get for buying the two together. The math on my order is confusing right now, so I will have to wait until the DVD ships to see if this gets straightened out.

Fianally, if you look up the DVD on their site, the listing now indicates "not currently available" (i.e., you can't order it at all). Wonder what that means.

Woot! Picked up both the 2xCD set and DVD, and I don't really like music DVDs but hey it's R.E.M. so I just gotta! :)

This set makes me think one thing: What a brilliant, creative, mysterious and exciting band these guys were in their prime.

The fan site murmurs.com has a video posted of a live performance of "Begin the Begin" with Bill Berry recently at the 40 Watt Club. They're rehearsing together to prepare for the GA Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on Saturday.

There's also a recent interview with Michael Stipe regarding the I.R.S. Collection release:

I didn't get the e-mail (and they didn't cancel my order), but they did charge me the $16.99 for the DVD as I suspected they would (see my previous post).

I did e-mail them, however, about the advertised $2.00 discount, which they failed to deduct. They replied that they are going to give me a credit. I am satisfied with that, although getting both for $14.99 would have been nice.

If they're putting out remastered versions of all the IRS albums why should I get the I Feel Fine compilation? Still, even though the albums were announced to be out first, there's still absolutley no info on them. Not even a date yet, which would still put them way off - they haven't been canceled, have they?

When The Light Is Mine
The Best Of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 Video Collection (DVD)

4. Radio Free Europe (Live, The Tube, 11/18/83)

Someone who actually recorded this show off-the-air years ago put this great performance on YouTube, so here it is as a little treat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mVw3QR4D8w).

(And I wish they would give us early-R.E.M. fans this whole show on DVD!)

Anyone who's followed R.E.M. knows how much of a big deal has been made of Stipe's lyrics. From the fact that you couldn't tell what the hell he was saying from people/fans having no real idea of what most of the songs meant, there was always talk about this.

I think I remember Stipe once saying they didn't put their lyrics in with their records because he didn't really know them all and/or he encouraged people to continue to let the song mean whatever they thought it meant to them.

They started relaxing about that kind of stuff with Out of Time and I'm not sure why. They also wouldn't play almost any of the really old stuff at concerts until their most recent tour.

When I was reading the liner notes, I found myself again thinking about all of those lyrics because there are so many comments about them by the band members.

I mean, it's fascinating to me that Stipe doesn't know what Pilgrimage is about. He wrote it and doesn't know what it's about.

Mike Mills mentions, I think about We Walk, that there was a word or two in the song that he didn't know until about a year ago.

I think Peter says that the band often didn't know what Stipe was writing about or what all the lyrics were and didn't want to know because he felt that he wanted it to me a little bit of a mystery to him they way it was for the fans.

Again, what amazing artists and certainly, in my opinion, they have the best body of work of any band that came around in my lifetime.

Stipe's lyrics mean whatever you want them to mean.

Wow, I just got this today & like Dolphinboy I was pleasantly surprised by the insight into the lyrics. Especially 'Life and How to Live It'. I've loved that song for as long as I can remember, but never had a clue what it was even remotely about until Stipe's introduction to the live version on disc 2.

It's too bad they only did notes for songs on the bonus disc. I'd have like to hear the bands thoughts on the more well-known stuff on the main disc too.

They actually took it off of Amazon - it was on their "fishbowl" program used to promote this release.
Go to album's listing at amazon and you can see it there too, along with the never released video for "Wolves,Lower".

This release is really a reminder of how great a band REM were in their IRS prime and how far they've declined in recent years. I marvel at Stipe's vocals in Finest Worksong, a seemingly simple song but there is so much depth to that repetitive chord.

No, I'm sure that the YouTube guy actually recorded it himself because he then sampled the rest of their set at the end of the clip - watch it on YouTube all the way to the end to see what I'm talking about. (R.E.M. did a whole set but the guy wasn't sure if he liked them, so he only recorded bits of the rest of the songs. He even admits he made a HUGE mistake in doing that instead of just letting his VCR record the whole thing.)

here you go [reubs82]

Another batch that we've been talking about for a long, long time are the imminent reissues of Document (a 2CD Deluxe Edition); Life's Rich Pageant (2CD Deluxe Edition); Fables of the Reconstruction (Deluxe Edition); and Film Stock - The Complete DVD, all of which street in January.

Going to resurrect this to say that no one on the Murmurs boards seems to know anything about these ever being released. The pipedream was fun while it lasted, I guess.
