I really want to see a MD-MSU matchup in the Challenge. The one time Maryland doesn't get Wisconsin or Illinois (they did Indiana once but that was only to set up a rematch of the '02 NCAA Final), they get Minnesota? :hscratch:

I just barely got HD a couple weeks ago (and I didn't technically get it, my mom did, so I'm spending most weekends down there lately -wink-), so do many college basketball games get broadcast in HD? I would love to check out that Arizona-Kansas matchup in HD.

It really depends if you get ESPN2HD. If you get that, then you probably get at least 2x as much as those of us without it.

Here is a preliminary guide:

Unfortunately, none of the Maui games appear to be in HD.

Greg Paulus was the #1 PG in his class? That doesn't say much for that class. Offensively he looks servicable, a decent handle and makes ok decisions. But he has no footspeed, and will get smoked by quicker guards on defense. Luckily for dook, Dockery looks very much improved, so they should be ok at the PG spot this year.

4 more days...4 more days...4 more days...I'm gonna go crazy.

Arizona had their final tune-up exhibition last night, took down Team Georgia 104-81. This one wasn't televised, but I guess they had a 30 point half time lead and it was whittled down to 14 in the second half, and Olson wasn't too happy. He's claiming that 6'6" walk-on Bret Brielmaier will be the starting center for the Kansas game on Monday unless someone beats him out in practice the remainder of this week. Bret pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in 14 minutes.

"Bret goes for everything,'' Olson said. "He goes hard. He's been our most efficient post guy all-around. He understands the game, he understands the offense, and I'm really pleased with him. I just wish we had another scholarship for him.''

Then Olson paused and adjusted the comment.

"I wish we could take a scholarship from somebody else and give it to him,'' he said.

 Probably just talk. I would be very surprised to see Bret in the starting lineup for such a key early season game, although he does play surprisingly well for a walk-on and saw some decent minutes in a couple of games last season.

The regional rounds of the Guardians Classic are done, with no surprises.

In the semis on Monday it will be WVU vs. Texas and Kentucky vs. Iowa, with the winners and losers playing on Tuesday.

Should be some great games.

For those interested, regional MVPS were:

Kevin Pittsnogle (WVU)
Greg Brunner (Iowa)
LaMarcus Aldridge (Texas)
Rajon Rondo (Kentucky)

I only saw the last 10 minutes of the game but I was actually kind of impressed by Wake despite the loss. There were definitely a lot of flaws in their game but they seemed to be easily correctable mental mistakes that I can forgive this early in the year. There was definitely some talent on display, although like the announcers (Vitale :yack: ) pointed out I'm not sure how deep they are.

Looking at Dook's schedule - if they can get by the road game at Texas in December (not to mention my Bison on Jan 2 ;) ), they should be undefeated when they host Maryland on Jan 11. Heck, they very well could be undefeated when they go to Maryland on Feb 11. That will be interesting.

Is their conditioning that bad, or is it something else?

Josh H
11-20-05, 12:22 PM
Is their conditioning that bad, or is it something else?

Jet lag probably the main factor. You an get cramps easier if you're tired.

Climate probably a factor to as it's obviously much warmer in Hawai'i than it is in Michigan this time of year.

MrX
11-20-05, 12:37 PM
Players are always cramping up during Maui. I think it's the climate.

DePaul and Marquette got cemented the fact that they will be Big East bottom feeders yesterday. DePaul lost at home to Bradley and Marquette lost at home to Winthrop.

Josh H
11-20-05, 12:39 PM
Yeah, Depaul will struggle in the Big East. Marquette will do well down the road, but they have a very young team and will get kicked around for a couple years until they get some experience.

MrX
11-20-05, 12:45 PM
DePaul has more talent than Marquette on paper. Leitao could recruit, just wasn't a very good coach.

Marquette has no height with talent so they are going to get killed when they have to play Syracuse and UConn. Winthrop killed them on the glass.

Josh H
11-20-05, 12:52 PM
Yeah, Marquette is down right now. But they recruit well and have great coaching. Being a final four team just a couple years ago, I expect them to do better than Depaul in the Big East in the long run.

I think the jury is still out on Crean. He looked great when he had Wade but since then he hasn't done anything. He also hasn't cashed in on the Final 4 recruiting wise.

Getting pumped for the Terps game. They looked decent on Friday night although I never care to see them full court press. This is the big test though - can Strawberry run the point against a very good opponent. I also wonder how the extra 6 hours of travel compared to the Zags will effect the Terps.

I heard Strawberry won the EA March Madness '06 mock tournament, so he's got that confidence going for him. I'm also pumped for the Wildcats, I really have no idea what this season will bring for them. They're very deep and athletic but also unproven and will be trying out a new offense. This will be such a great tournament because even if they go 1-2 it will show them exactly what they need to work on to make themselves competitive come March.

Great games tonight. I'll probably miss all or most of the Terps game unfortunately, but can't wait for WVU-Texas. Iowa-Kentucky should be a good one as well.

On a side note, I'll get to see WVU in person at least once more, as I got tickets last night for the February game @ Georgetown.

Hawaii wins by 22. Guess that's the jetlag factor.

It was televised locally, and it was a GREAT game by the Rainbows. In 30 years of watching them, I have NEVER seen a visiting team encounter such cramps, though. However, in total objectivity, we had control of the game from the opening.

I do give Tom Izzo credit for scheduling a game with us, as it's becoming harder and harder for us to find quality opponents to come here. But any team who comes here shouldn't blame jet lag -- it's only 1 road trip. The Rainbows have to hit at least 5 road trips during the season with multiple games on several. We travel SO MUCH compared to most teams that it is never an even playing field. Early as it is, this year's team is truly promising, and I hope to see them in the NCAA tournament (where Izzo agrees they belong). I'm SO glad Riley Wallace finally has a team again whom he allows to RUN! :)

Hats off to the Zags. They're really good. They must have shot about 60% of their 3s and 70% in the 2nd half. I don't think Maryland played a bad game and they should be fine in the ACC.

Adam Morrison is awesome. He is as good as Caney-Medley is horrible.

What sucks is that Maryland gets stuck playing Chaminade next game. That won't help at all.

Arizona doing their best to give this game away with their complete lack of offense (and Marcus Williams' horrendous free throw shooting) but are holding onto the lead still. It helps that Kansas loses the ball on an uncontested fast break layup.

Texas and WVU going down to the wire. Only have watched the last few minutes. Has WVU been mostly firing 3s all night?

No, more running back doors and driving to the hoop. Didn't chuck three's quite as often as we usually do.

Was a heartbreaking loss, but that's what happens when you can't make your clutch free throws. :( Oh well, I expected us to get killed so this was a huge surprise and shows we can play with anyone this year.

Mainly dissapointed in the loss as now I won't get to see the game tomorrow as the consolation games on stupid ESPNU. Hopefully they win tomorrow, will suck to have blown this one and then lose tomorrow t0o and come out of the tourney 2 and 2. Especialy with non conference games coming up vs LSU and @Oklahoma and @UCLA and the brutal Big East schedule to follow.

WallyOPD
11-22-05, 09:50 AM
My only solace is that UConn is averaging over 20 turnovers in their first two games so they may be vulnerable to Arizona's pressure defense. The Wildcats won't be able to win though if they can't find a way to create some consistent offense and open looks. Last night was way too haphazard and forced, lots of talent on the floor but it looked like they had no offensive gameplan whatsoever.

Oh and a #7 vs. #13 game being relegated to ESPNU? :grumble:

Yep, I have to agree. I get sick of hearing about Pittsnogle. Non-WVU fans forget that he didn't even start most of last year and only averaged 11 pts a game. He's a good player, but Gansey is the star.

Moves great without the ball, is a great slasher, a great rebounder, can hit threes, plays great D, hustles all the time etc. I wouldn't trade him straight up for any other player in the country.

Hope they aren't hung over from last nights choke job is which they themselves got Pittsnogled. They really need a win tonight over Kentucky.

Yeah I haven't been able to watch the game but judging by the scoring it sure looks like Williams was able to light a fire under them at halftime.

I feel your pain. I was tossing and turning last night hearing the "clangs!" of those three missed front ends by WVU over and over. :(

I honestly think this collapse stings worse than blowing the 20 point lead against Louisville. I guess because at that point I was already happy with how far they got, where as this was early and a win over Texas would have put us off to a great start in getting a high NCAA tourney seed.

Looks like we're going to get killed, down by 10 now. :(

Edit: 13 now.

Kentucky on a 20-0 run. :( All we're doing is missing three's and all they're doing is making 3's.

Josh H

33-26 Kentucky at the half.

WVU is 3-19 on three's after going 9 for 23 last night. -rolleyes-

They need to get the ball inside on back doors again, if it worked against Texas with Aldridge and Buckman down their, they ought to be able to do it against Kentucky as well.

Oh well, hopefully Kentucky will stay cooled off, they were on fire from 3 for a while, but missed several toward the end of the half finishing 6 for 13.

Josh H
11-22-05, 08:49 PM
Kentucky wins 80-66. WVU got it down to 4 with 8 minutes or so left, but kentucky hit a couple quick 3's and put it back out of reach.

Well, fuck, that's a shitty start to the season. A 2-2 start's not good for WVU when they still have non conference games against LSU and @Oklahoma and @UCLA. Those missed free throws last night are going to bite us in the ass on selection sunday, being it keeping us out if we're on the bubble, or at the least hurting our seeding some.

The LSU game at home this saturday is the closet thing to a must win you can have in November IMO.

Only positive I can take from this loss is at least the missed free throws last night didn't fuck with Pittsnogle's confidence as he played great and scored 27.

Football team better not choke against Pitt Thursday! I can only take so much in 4 days!

Have to agree. Some amazing games. Too much dissapointment as a WVU fan, but still amazing matchups and finishes for this early in the year!

Should be a great season. Last year it was pretty likely we'd get Illinois vs. UNC in the title game. I don't think there are two teams that dominant this year.

Nice article in the Syracuse paper re: the asking-for-ass-raping Bucknell Bison....

No further proof needed, Bucknell is indeed legit

BUD POLIQUIN
POST-STANDARD COLUMNIST

Well, it wasn't as if you hadn't been warned about the possibility that something like this could happen. This wasn't ever going to be the sneakered version of Bush vs. Dukakis, or Tyson vs. Spinks, or Carl Lewis vs. the national anthem.

This was never, in other words, going to be a mangling. So if you're surprised that the Bison from itty-bitty Bucknell grazed into the Carrier Dome Tuesday evening and knocked off the big, bad Orange of Syracuse University, 74-69... um, you weren't paying attention.

"All I can say," offered Charles Lee, "is, Watch out for the Bison.' We're a very good team. We might be overmatched sometimes, but we'll fight. We'll fight through all our games. This might have been a surprise to some people, but it wasn't a surprise to us. We came in here not to try to compete, but to try to win. And we pulled it out."

Charles Lee? He is Bucknell's 6-foot-3 senior guard with a talent as smooth as his syntax. And after he’d scored 18 points, pulled down five rebounds and passed off for four assists against SU, he was approached by a local nit who asked him, "I’m out of line to be shocked by this, aren’t I?"

"Yes," he said as calmly as you please. "I really think you are."

The point is, the Bison came in as advertised, which is to suggest that the Bucknell boys didn’t look at all like what we all used to think Bucknell boys looked like. The bunch that was losing at home to Albany as recently as four years ago and at home to Yale in ’03? In basketball terms, that was so yesterday.

Apparently, something’s been mixed in with the Kool-Aid there at Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pa. Prior to last season, after all, the Bison had trudged through four consecutive losing campaigns, but then... poof! A 23-10 record. Regular-season road wins over Pittsburgh and Saint Joseph’s. A victory in the Dome (even if it was over Northern Colorado). That remarkable toppling of Kansas in the NCAA Tournament.

Amazing.Suddenly, Bucknell wasn’t anybody’s handkerchief to be used, folded and placed in a back pocket; rather, it was a real, live obstacle... and quite capable of putting the ball in the basket (which it did 25 times in 47 attempts against the day-late-and-dollar-short Syracuse defense). And while the Bison guys still aren’t Ewing’s Hoyas, they are legit and a whole lot more of a load than the opposition usually gets around here in the calendar year.

In any event, they were more than what this evolving Orange edition could handle on this chilly night. With each of its five starters returning from that Kansas upset last March and with a bit of Capt. Jack Sparrow in its step, Bucknell has become a bona fide challenge. Which meant that the Syracuse athletes needed to have eaten their beans before this one.

Alas, as those 20,490 Domers in the house discovered, they didn’t eat nearly enough.

"Our defense wasn’t good enough," declared Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who was as composed as he was unwavering, "and our rebounding was pathetic."

The Orangeshooting wasn’t so hot, either, as Boeheim’s swells missed 37 of their 60 shots from the field, including 15 of the 24 they lobbed from beyond the arc. Which means they came up with doughnuts across the board — offense, defense and rebounding. And that did not please the boss.

"There’s a reason nobody respected us that much in the polls," said Boeheim, whose squad is listing at 3-2. "We’re not that good. We’ve got a lot of work to do right now. You’ve got to remember, Bucknell is good... but they won at Rider by two points. They’re a good team, but, you know, you gotta be able to play with them."

Fact is,the Orange did that in one stretch of nearly 10 minutes as it turned an eight-point deficit with three minutes to play before the intermission (24-16) into a seven-point advantage with 13½ minutes remaining in the second half (47-40). But beyond that 31-16 run, this was a decidedly Bison affair. Indeed, subtract those 10 nice Syracuse minutes that spilled from one stanza to the next and Bucknell wins going away 58-38.

"I’m telling you, we’re not stunned," insisted Lee, who was one of three Bucknell players in double figures. "We love these kinds of games. We had a lot of confidence coming in because of those previous games we won. On any given day, anybody can beat anybody. I think we’ve proven that in the past and I think we’re going to continue to prove that in the future."

SU? Let us draw no serious conclusions before we even carve the Thanksgiving bird, shall we? God created November and December with Orange transitions such as this one — this creaking passage from the Warrick-Pace-Forth troika to the Roberts-Watkins-Devendorf trio — in mind. And it will be up to the Syracuse oufit to use the time wisely as it wends its way into January and to the dawn of Phase II of this, Boeheim’s 30th season on the bridge.

"I don’t thinkthere’s a team that we’re playing right now that can’t beat us if we don’t get better," said Boeheim, whose bunch has those Siena Saints dead ahead. "We have a long, long ways to go. Hopefully, everybody will realize that and we’ll get there."

With Bucknell out of the way, that job will get easier. And, yes, you read that right.

WVU drops another one, 71-68 at home to LSU in overtime.

This brutal non-conference schedule they put together this year is killing us.

Gansey had a great game with 28 points and 8/12 on three's, but Pittsnogle didn't show up and only had 5 points and the whole team was 15/45 on threes. Way too many threes attempted, but I figured that would happen as there's no way we can do anything inside on a team with LSU's crazy size inside.

Top guard chooses Illinois

By Jeff Rabjohns
jeff.rabjohns@indystar.com
November 28, 2005

Eric Gordon, North Central High School's prolific shooting guard, has decided to play college basketball for Illinois, his father confirmed Sunday night.

Gordon, ranked as high as the fifth-best player in the nation in the junior class by some scouting services, was one of the most highly sought players in the nation. He was also being recruited by Duke and other major programs.

Gordon can sign a letter of intent in the fall of his senior year.

Ranked No. 5 in the nation by rivals.com, Gordon is unquestionably Indiana's highest-rated junior.

"The No. 1 thing is just the coaching staff," the elder Gordon, also named Eric, said of the Illini, coached by Bruce Weber. "They recruited him since he was younger. They've shown so much interest in him."

The elder Gordon also cited the proximity from Indianapolis to Illinois' campus in Champaign, Ill., and the way Illinois developed guards Deron Williams and Luther Head, both playing in the NBA. Both were keys in Illinois' national runner-up run last season.

Williams was the No. 3 overall pick by the Utah Jazz, and Head was the 24th overall pick by the Houston Rockets. Williams is averaging 13.6 points as the second-leading scorer for the Jazz, and is the team leader is assists at 5.1 per game. Head is averaging 9.8 points and shooting 49.0 percent from 3-point range.

The younger Gordon could not be reached for comment.

A news conference announcing the decision is expected this week.

Gordon led North Central as a sophomore with a 26.5-point scoring average.

The 6-2 shooting guard made a strong impression this summer with Spiece Indy Heat. As the shooting guard on the team that included 7-foot center Greg Oden and point guard Mike Conley, Gordon was a stellar shooter, penetrator and defender.

Oden, the national high school Player of the Year, and Conley, both seniors, are headed to Ohio State.

Gordon's decision means top players in four consecutive classes have headed out of state.

Carmel's Josh McRoberts is starting for Duke as a freshman. Then there are Oden and Gordon. Warren Central's Walter Offutt, considered the top player in the 2008 class, made an oral commitment to Ohio State.
